Is there a way to deposit money in your paypal account using your own credit card?
Reason why I am asking is that I would like to deposit money in my paypal account to save a bit of money over time for a purchase. I don’t want to use a bank transfer because it takes too much time for paypal to process the transaction because it could end up being a spur of the moment purchase and I would like the money to be there.
I would not mind the fees just as long as I don’t break any rules and such.
thanks

"Is there a way to deposit money in your paypal account using your own credit card?"
NO. That would be considered a "cash advance" and is not allowed on PayPal.
"I would like the money to be there."
Then send money from your bank account today and it will be there when you want to spend it! 🙂
Most buyers prefer to pay for their eBay purchase with a credit card so they are protected by their card issuer should something go wrong with the transaction and the PayPal protection does not apply (whatever the reason).

If you really want it from your credit card, you can do a cash advance outside of paypal, then transfer the money from your bank account to paypal. That would be the only way.

Just keep in mind that cash advance = expensive fee. Dunno about your credit card issuer but mine is 19.9% fee.
I agree with pierre's suggestion: transfer money from your bank now so that you have funds to spend whenever you want.

If you buy from money in your bank account, there will be a delay in payment to the seller of up to 10 days.
If you transfer money from your bank or cc to your PP balance you are covered by PP if they accept your claim.
If you use your cc balance to fund a PP payment, you have both PP and the cc Buyer Protection. And the payment is instant.

I always pay for purchases from my PP balance. Recently I tried to pay using my credit card for the protection you mention and PP would not allow me to use it. There was a message to the effect that I couldn't pay by cc as long as my account had enough funds to cover the purchase. There was no option to change the payment method. Am I missing something?

Why not setting up your credit card as funding source on PayPal ? The payment is instant and gets billed to your CC only when you make purchase.
And if you want to put money away from your main account to save up for random purchases, many people don't know this but credit cards also allow negative balance (so instead of you owing money to CC, the CC owes money to you). Basically you overpay your CC statement and your CC becomes "prepaid" CC but without the fees of the real prepaid CCs.

"I couldn't pay by cc as long as my account had enough funds to cover the purchase."
That is correct.
To pay for your purchase from your credit card you cannot have a balance in your PayPal account.
The problem arises mostly for sellers on eBay wanting to use their credit card while they have a balance in their PayPal account.
The problem does not exist for most users who are buyers exclusively. As such, they should never have a balance in their PayPal account and all their purchases will be charged to the credit card IF they select that option at time of payment - otherwise it is charged to the bank account linked to PayPal.

Mostly correct, but it does get slightly more complicated.
To pay with a credit card, you cannot have a PayPal balance in the currency that is required for the purchase. It's OK to have a balance in another currency.
For example, I used to sell in $US so I often had a PayPal balance in $US. When I bought items listed in $US, I was forced to use my PayPal balance. When I bought postage from Canada Post through PayPal shipping, or bought items listed in $ CAD, I was able to use my credit card.
Now that I sell in $ CAD, I am forced to pay postage from my balance, but I use my credit card for $ US purchases.

I am afraid it is no longer the case. PayPal is going from bad to worse.
I have PayPal balance in CAD and wanted pay for an USD item with a credit card. I have 3 CC linked to the PayPay account, one of them in USD, and one in CAD with 0% currency exchange fee. I was forced to pay either with my CAD PayPal balance or CAD from my bank account. In both cases I would be charged 2.5% "exchange fee". Bank transfer would cause a many days delay before the seller gets the money (wasn't it instant payment before?). CC payment option was not available at all. PayPal is just trying to squeese more money out of its users.
The only good reason to fund your own PayPal account with CC would be to collect points or cash back on your CC. That would be sweet but unfortunately PayPay does not have such loophole.
