I made a purchase through paypal using my credit card on Dec 1/20. I was following up on why I hadn't received the item and the company has closed up. This wasn't through ebay but a company on Facebook. I couldn't find this on the record on paypal, although it does show up on my credit card that it was paid to paypal. I did get an email from paypal. Who do I call to report it and get my money back?

Best bet is give PayPal a shout. They are usually very helpful with these kinds of situations. I have one a few months ago and they handled very quickly once they do their due dilligence.

If you paid through PayPal, it should in theory appear there... ? Did you try going directly to their resolution center?

When I followed the payment on the website, I went through paypal but rather than paying with balances, I chose credit card for protection. I can't find it anywhere on my paypal although I got 2 emails from paypal and on my credit card it shows paypal and then the name of the person.

While it is a good idea to follow through first with PP*, if you can't find it, don't stress just go with the credit card chargeback.
The main reason to start with PP is that if you have lost a chargeback, PP won't allow a Claim, but the card will allow you to go there if you lose on PP.
*You know their Resolution Centre is at the top of the page under Tools, right?

Good news, I called paypal and they reviewed it and refunded right away. Apparently several others have been caught in this fraud scheme. They refunded my money right away. I ordered a photo scanner and they sent me a silicone wall vase (worth about $1) that was tracked from China. When I got the vase, I didn't connect the 2, until the paypal person gave me the tracking #. I am glad I saved the envelope. I should have known better. Got my money back, though.
Also I didn't go through my paypal account so it didn't show up. They said I had to talk to them.
