Awwwww......Lucie, that was beautiful. My Hubs is a stepfather to my 2 teens, and I couldn't have asked for better. It takes a very special man to raise children that aren't his by blood, but are his by choice. :)

Hi everyone.
Just got home from a Women's World Day of Prayer service. Well, I helped with the clean-up after - the service really wasn't this long. I had never taken the time to read about it before. This year we are honoring the women of Paraguay. Our church hosted it this year for the Armstrong community. I just thought it felt so affirming and inspiring knowing women around the world are gathering together to pray for each other - felt pretty powerful. Some men come too, but it's mostly women. The culture is woven into the service and at the tea after the service, some cultural dishes are served (tasted Paraguayan cornbread today). An offering is taken up and distributed as grants to different 'women's program' around the world.
We reflected on the the theme "United under God's Tent" - 'in Christ we are one body within God's sheltering tent, covered by God's protective cloak'.
I think it's really cool that on the first Friday of March every year we gather and form 'a global circle of prayer whose dimensions extend without boundaries and limits'.
Today we encircle Paraguay and our own communities and countries with our worship and work, our commitment to prayer and action. It is our hope that no one and no place will be left out, that the hand of prayer will also be hands in partnership for the work of building the Reign of God.
Didn't know if anyone else is aware of this in their own communities. Anyway, just sharing a thoughtful afternoon with you all.

That sounds interesting, Nellie. I don't know whether Ottawa has something similar on this date, if so I haven't heard of it. It might be nice to research whether there are any woman from Paraguay actually living where you are and maybe they could be invited to the prayer service next time.
Lucie, actually the whole service is prepared by women of Paraguay. Among the prayers we read 'typical life sketches' - we heard about Demetria, woman from the country, Susana, an indigenous woman (Enxet), Angelica, a working child, Rosalba, a university graduate, Anahi, an artist (paraguayan harp), and Mercedes, an artisan (Nanduti-weaver). Nanduti is a type of lace - a fabric like a spider-web of different designs, in which many separate parts are joined together to form one whole (probably similar to the North American quilt). We do try to make it as authentic as possible - it's really great when you do find a representative for the country you're celebrating - then you have costumes for the participants!
The material comes from the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada. It's interesting to see some of the groups benefitting from the grants.

Thanks MLM, I sure need that prayer today -- never felt so far away from God as I have these past few months -- prayers haven't worked at all for me for a very long time and neither does going to church. Thinking about taking a good, long break from all of it to do some reading and re-think what I believe in, without the influence of clergy or books. :_|
