Justin Trudeau meets with hunger striking chief Theresa Spence

OTTAWA — Like many Canadians, Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence spent a quiet Christmas morning with her family, opening presents with two of her five daughters.

But far from her home on James Bay, Spence entered the third week of a hunger strike Tuesday, an action she says won’t end until Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov. Gen. David Johnston agree to sit down and talk about Canada’s treaty relationship with First Nations leadership.

She did have a visitor on Boxing Day, however, Liberal Leadership hopeful Justin Trudeau came by to meet with the First Nations leader.

“It was deeply moving to meet [Theresa Spence] today. She is willing to sacrifice everything for her people. She shouldn’t have to,” Trudeau wrote on twitter.

Old news.

Now do your research just like it was a school project and instead of just looking at the surface, dig deeper and find out ............all the reason ...........why.

Lysiane Gagnon, I can see why you chose her. Of all Quebec's francophone columnists, she is probably Israel's most prominent defenders and  director of the Canadian Jewish Congress.

Well at least they can get married. In Israel a non-Jew cannot marry a Jew.

Re: Justin meets with "Idle No More" Chief Spence

There is not enough Research to ever convince me that the goverment should choose to look out for Very Capable native men well Children of any culture suffer or starve etc.

I don't feel bad for them nor do I feel bad for any other cultures other then ones in 3rd world countriesIf you have a brain in your head to hands and to feet you should work not ask the goverment for stuff .. no matter what hisory lesson anyone gives me my morals will not change..

I mean who would pick little white, black, brown green and orange babies suffering over a full grown native man complaining he is broke and want a nicer house..

I say screw the history it is an overplayed record there are far from the only culture that gets screwed so do like the rest of us and change as much as you can for yourself then look for help for the rest ...

i mean go to Remote reserve up north they complain food is too expensive we can't afford it ...

1; No way your mean because Special companies and flight have to be made your food is more Expensive I never would have guessed...

2. In the old days you never would have hear of expensive food because there way was to live of the land not out of a grocery store which is why life there use to be less expensive because the haunted there food they didn't buy ..

You live in remote areas you will pay doesn't matter who are...

change your ways maybe maybe not but everyone has to change with the times...

the only thing I ever here is you took my land you took my land .. IT IS NOT THAT SIMPLE . Because they took the land doesn't mean the Goverment has Billions upon billions to give away that is not how money works..

Last time I check the old native way was all about living off the land and natives have that right to fish and hunt as they please no questions asked.

i am tired of hearing there is no oppurtinity as well because  that is not true .. maybe is isolated reserve but where i am from There is tons of oppurtunity and there are even laws in place to help with natives to not be Descriminated against in the work force... 80% of the natives in my area have jobs and most of them good.. The ones that don't live in more isolated areas where there will never be jobs but they are not stuck there they choose to stay there and not matter how much you want there to be oppurtinity in isolated reserve there will never be ..

Where i live holtyre Ont there is 0 jobs to be had in this town 0 but 90% of the community has jobs why because we have to move and adapt...

I love everyone but seriously clean the disc so it stops skipping..

"In any case, the concept of "racial purity" is completely obsolete in today's world"

For sure in our multicultural society and becoming more so with time.

Canada's aging population requires signifigant numbers of immigrants just to maintain a level of population needed for continued prosperity. And not to mention temporary workers from other societies needed to satisfy seasonality.

What might be the effect of our immigration policy on native rights and claims over the long haul? Maybe it's one of the fears. Or is it a non starter?

LOL...I can see your point.

The question was......

If you or your family found out you owned thousands of acres of land and it was worth billions (including resources), but someone was taking it away from you.....would you fight to get it back for yourself, your children and your future family?......or would you just let the other person take it?

The same question with an 'extension'.....if they not only wanted to take the land but also moved you and your family off the land you own now and leave you in a tent somewhere else.....would you fight for your rights?.....or just let them do whatever they wanted?

Ain't that the truth!

Years ago in high school there was this guy called Keith. Whenever a group of us played football and his side was losing...he would always change the rules to suit him. It kind of bothered me.

A few years ago him and I bumped into each other and we were talking about the past. He had changed, but he still had the scar.

Will answer the question later as we have to take our daughter to the airport early in the morning.

Some Pharmacists get together in Vancouver next week so her & a girlfriend are going a couple days earlier & ringing in the New Year on the Coast.

A future is something some people don't have. So they don't have to worry about it.

Some people in Canada won't go after what is their's. They're all bark. But they'll complain about everyone else who will stand up to injustice. They can't bear to see people who have courage.

Air Canada does surprise me sometimes. Daughters flight to the Coast supposed to leave at 7 and depated at 7:11. Not bad for the holiday season.

Lets try & keep a certain racial group out of this discussion unless we look at both sides.

Have some Aboriginals taken advantage of the government, sure but other racial groups have also. I still believe those individuals are in the minority. Lets keep in mind the Government is sometimes known to sock it to all of us regardless of race.

Being a Non-Aboriginal, i cannot feel their plight, but i can understand some of their concerns.

Are there some Radical Aboriginals which make you want to shake your head, yes, but there are also Corporate Executives which also make me shake my head. Absoluely nothing to do with race.

Idle No More Awareness Dances, still won't use the word protest. There were three in Winnipeg malls this year with no incidents or complaints taking place. I guess there were no overzealous Security Guards interupting the proceedings.

Rumour is there is one taking place taking place at Portage & Main tonight. Not sure if it will happen, going to be very cold with the windchill. Kudos to them if they tough it out.

Idle Dancers are peaceful, much like the Friendly Mob that shut down the same intersection when the announcement of the NHL coming back hit the airwaves. Why were there no complaints then? Are they not both peaceful celebrations which help create an awareness?

Deacon probably forgot about this but we had a similiar discussion a few years back. My in-laws are Latvian & fled during the Russian Revolution with the shirts on their backs & like other Latvians lost everything inncluding property. They didn't have the chance to protest at that time for obvious reasons.

Yes they lived on handouts from the Government for the first couple of years & then re-established themselves. Much like other racial groups have, including Aboriginals.

Lets don't forever hack on racial groups that are taking advantage of the system. Those individuals, i consider, still in the minority.

Those that ignore the past,

have a tendency to repeat it.

Shall we give up on say,

Remembrance Day?

(Aboriginal National oppression day),

AKA

Thanksgiving?

Christmas?

just to name a few.

Re: Justin meets with "Idle No More" Chief Spence

Actually i'm quite capable of  posting my own thoughts without Deacon's influence.

He was though, at one time, a big influence on me in regards to a distributor i was thinking on doing business with in his area.

Even though he had limited dealings with this distributor he assured me they had a good reputation. Most would have expected him to throw this company under the bus, but he did not.

On his word i bought out a certain line of shirts from this distributor, received great service & sold them all.

Everyone knows i will defend everyone on the forums including Deacon but he knows i will disagree with him also.

There also is a great side to him away from the forums.

Re: Justin meets with "Idle No More" Chief Spence

We’ve disagreed bb but the difference between you and others in general life is you’re honest, open-minded, can think out of the box and there is no hatred in you. I respect that. I’ve been around long enough that I can easily tell the fanatics from others who are just seeking answers. You’re ….ok. 😉

As for “would have expected him to throw this company under the bus, but he did not”…I would never do that. If it was even a company I didn’t like and I was talking to someone face to face I still would not put the other company down….that’s bad business. If someone brings a company name up to me and they are untrustworthy or do poor work it’s a simple matter of just saying “I would recommend this firm instead”. People know what I’m doing, their not stupid. Even if a person presses me about another company I will just say point blank….”I have no comment”. When a company is good however I will give them all the references necessary. They worked for it and they deserve it. I even often send business to some of my competitors, especially smaller firms, because I like to see people succeed in life. There is more than enough for everyone….no one needs to be greedy.

Thanks for the link hereiam, and I have read it previously. It’s basic. But when negotiations start there seems to always be problems…..and that…..is what we do not hear about. The First Nations request this….but the government rejects the idea….why? (and visa versa) The devil is in the details…..and so are the costs and the frustrations and the anger etc etc etc.
