My kids have no school tomorrow, not the end of the world in this household but I can see some other parents pretty upset about forced day off.
I myself am not going to take sides. Those who read me here before, know I am against blanket "right to strike" without consequences, but that's not this situation.

We have all the laws and infrastructure preventing psychopathic union reps from harassing members, so where did we go wrong ?
puckstopshere, why would employee come to your office dragged by the shop steward crying and not report coercion to Ministry of Labour ?
What happens if someone blows the whistle and reports union representative ? Did any union representative ever face labour relations act violation or assault charges?
Teachers are teaching our kids to stand up to the bullies. Perhaps they should practice what they preach.

Was she crying because of the steward that dragged her in, or was she crying because of the problem with the other employee?
I knew this woman who was a night cleaner at a school. She was threatened by another employee. She didn’t want to file a grievance because he said if she did….he would get her. After talking to other employees and ‘crying’ they convinced her to file the grievance.
I know another woman a PSW at a retirement home. She was afraid to file a grievance against the employer because she knew it meant her work hours would be cut and she needed the money for her family.

I would like to see how many teachers stay with the union if Ontario were to become a right to work province.
If this weren't about money then how come the teachers are working today?
01-11-2013 01:28 PM
I'm not sure but but the rumour was our PITA colleague sought out attorneys who mentioned " Did You Approach the Union First."
Couldn't the Ministry of Labour ask the same question ? Not sure, no experience with anything like this.
With my previous example employees launching a grievance must go in with "Clean Hands."

What about a Teachers right to decide on their OWN what they want to do?
92% voted for striking.
guess you did not have time to read the article?? 92% of those THAT VOTED!!! it was NOt a secret ballot each person had to put their name and union # on the ballot! If the union can threaten people ($500 a day fine for not doing as they say) do you really think that those that disagreed would actually vote? really really???
01-11-2013 01:51 PM
Really ??? Did this happen ???
In my experience we have never put our names on an any Union Ballot. Maybe things have changed.

Tons of jobs like that my friend.... I for one am a gold mill I started with 2 weeks paid wacation after 5 year I get another week every 5 years.. My schedule has me work 12 hr 14 with driving night shift and dayshifts but with Vacation and paid sick time I only work 5 1/2 months a year and I did not have to go 100k in debt for schooling and I do not have to deal with 30 kids with 30 different personalitiesCrying,Screaming,Spitting ... Teachers willing do more for the children of this world then alot of parents do.
How many People here put in 2-3 hrs extra of work to helpout with no pay .. How many Parents play sports with there kids on there own time 6-12 hrs a week ...
Teachers and parents need to fight this together.. My mom Lost 166 banked sick days she has accumulated in 20 years of teaching how is that right ....
They are fighting to have an annual raise and to keep there sick time even the person who makes your timmies coffe or flips your burger king burger get raises every year and what do they do for society and our children..
The School my mom works at Will feed the children with nothing above and beynond the programs they hav in place .. They was kids clothes when the dead beat parents leave them in the same close for 2 weeks and send there kids to school set and ready to be bullied ...
Teacher are really the centre of everything .. If there was no teachers we probably wouldn't even have these forums to write on .. They shape and mold our children to be successful and know how to deal with life...
I for one would work 365 days a year 12hrs a day before I thought about dealing with 30 screaming kids..
Parents are mad because in inconvience them not because there children are losing out .. I actually know about 10 or parents that have kids who always skip school and get suspended all the time and are always failing and they are losing there minds about the techer strikes WHY because they have to deal with there own kids for 1 extra day it sure isn't about education... I would bet 50% of the Mad parents are these type of Parents with those types of kids..
They are not asking for more just for whats right ... Teach our children about democracy and keep up the good fight ..
IF any of you complaining about them having it easy think it's easy then go find 100k go to school and then go deal with the 30 screaming kids everyday and let me know what you think then

lots of people it's called VOLUNTEERING--and less than 10% of teachers help out with extra curricular activities
Teachers and parents need to fight this together.. My mom Lost 166 banked sick days she has accumulated in 20 years of teaching how is that right ....
hmmm SICK leave--is your mom sick if so sorry to hear that but after 2 weeks of sick leave her short term disability will kick in and then after i think 6 weeks her long term disabilty kicks in--that is as long as she is SICK---these are SICK days not I can retire early days!
They are fighting to have an annual raise and to keep there sick time even the person who makes your timmies coffe or flips your burger king burger get raises every year and what do they do for society and our children..
Actually most of these people ONLY got raises when the minimum wage went up and if they had them just before minimum wage brought them right back down to where there were before-in FACT my daughter's contract (who is unionized) got her a 5 CENT raise after working 1300 hours, she is part-time and max for part-time is 24 hours that means that NO raise for at LEAST 54 weeks
The School my mom works at Will feed the children with nothing above and beynond the programs they hav in place .. They was kids clothes when the dead beat parents leave them in the same close for 2 weeks and send there kids to school set and ready to be bullied ...

Agree with most of your post.
However My Mom lost 166 banked sick days she has accumulated in 20 years of teaching how is that right...
I recieve a day & a quarter a month sick time a year stipulated in my Union Contract.
Starting my 25th year i have used ten sick days due to injury & now three days because i have a head cold.
We are not allowed to bank our sick days but i'm sure i'm not going to use them just because thay are alloted to me in my contract.
Trust me, in my job management has a way of catching ones who abuse sick time. If caught there is no Union Protection.
I have also accumulated thousands of dollars in EI Premiums over the years but i have never filed. Maybe EI owes me a rebate.

Why did she go to work while she was sick and infecting others?

Thats 10% more then any other fields I know of

I worked dead end jobs for 15 years and got a raise every year like clock work .. Part time and full time 2 different worlds
My mother has been a teacher for 25 years ..My aunt for 30 years and let me tell you Up north in our small communities alot more then 10% volunteer there time ...
Last but not least considering 80% plus of all statistics are BS I say first hand is a good way to know and I have over 75 year of teachers in my family and I know what they do is far more then most people sacrifice for our children

I get that BB most places won't let you bank sick time but they had agreements that allowed them too bank it now they were stripped of that .. I don't think they should be able to bank sick time but to go back 20 years on an agreement is alittle different because you knew from the get go you use them or lose them .. Many teacher never called in sick even if they were sick or not because they were assuming they could accumulate them which they could .
To strip them of a 20 year agreement is a little different atleast I think so anyways
When you pay EI you do it knowing what you get and what it's for and if you ever get hurt and need it they are not going to say OOO we changed that sorry you get nothing,...

Dedication ...100s of kids go to school sick why do parents send there sick kids to school? How do you think Most the teachers get sick ?
01-11-2013 03:05 PM
1 More thing just to be Clear when I talk Volunteering I mean at your place of work .. Not runs for cnacer and stuff like that
01-11-2013 03:23 PM
brandeentertainment, you are from long family of teachers. Let's stop squabbling and let me ask you something: do you feel retired teachers are better off than retirees from private sector ?

check your facts also as Teachers here were told that all accumulated sick leave was grandfathered BUT if they use any and reduce it UNDER the new max of 120 days--STILL 6 MONTHS then and ONLY then will the "new" max kick in.
01-11-2013 03:29 PM
and AGAIN I would think a "teacher" would know what SICK means---RETIRE and SICK 2 different words.
PROVE your sick and she can have all the time off she wants! Short term disability will kick in and then Long Term -if she is SICK she can be on it the rest of her life--but of course they want proof that she is SICK.
She has full dental also does she claim she got a tooth pulled without going to the dentist to make sure she gets full benefit from that also?

Teachers accepted what was given over years, who wouldn't. There is another agenda at play while parents and teachers are busy in each other's hair. Keep cool and see what happens.
01-11-2013 03:42 PM
Well the 20 years thing was just noumber out of my head not facts just examples ...
IF what you are saying is a fact then why did my mother with 166 days lose ALL of her banked time and My Aunt with 183 banked sick lose ALL of her time .. If what your saying is a fact this would not make sense ...
