Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

My kids have no school tomorrow, not the end of the world in this household but I can see some other parents pretty upset about forced day off.

I myself am not going to take sides. Those who read me here before, know I am against blanket "right to strike" without consequences, but that's not this situation.

PROVE your sick and she can have all the time off she wants! Short term disability will kick in and then Long Term -if she is SICK she can be on it the rest of her life--but of course they want proof that she is SICK.

Most in my family have to much pride to play games ike that .. Sick days are for colds and flu... Not for being dying of cancer ...

She has full dental also does she claim she got a tooth pulled without going to the dentist to make sure she gets full benefit from that also?

Are you 12 years old or something ?

Re: Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

puckstopshere, why would employee come to your office dragged by the shop steward crying and not report coercion to Ministry of Labour ?

She was not a complainer.  Preferred to come to work, do her job, go home.  Didn't want the drama.  She was happy in her job.  She was not the type to call Ministry of Labour.

I was "unofficially threatened" many times by union business agents.  Never in a meeting.  Always when we wee one-on-one.  Had a business agent who disliked one of my supervisors.  He told me (in a meeting with other people) that he wished that we were back in the good old days.  The union would have gotten a few of their members to meet this supervisor in a dark alley.  After they had "discussed his attitude" with him, they would never have a problem with him again.

Had an incident on a picket line.  I was stopped in my car.  A picketer threw herself on the hood of my car, then falling to the ground.  I was pulled from my vehicle (forcefully) and accused of hitting her.  Fortunately, there were police nearby who intervened.  However, they had not "witnessed the actual incident".  After a brief discussion with the picketers (and a lot of laughter from them and the cops), I was allowed to get back in my vehicle and drive through.  Had there been charges laid, I have no doubt that the union would have come up with a hundred witnesses to testify that I hit her.  Even though there were only about 35 picketers.

Later in life, I worked as a security guard on a picket line near Sudbury.  Soon after arriving, my photo appeared on the union website along with my name and home address.  There was also a statement - "we know where your family is".

Re: Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

Was she crying because of the steward that dragged her in

Yes.  She didn't want to be there and said so.

was she crying because of the problem with the other employee?

No.  There are people in this world who will not rock the boat no matter what happened to them.  This lady was Cambodian and had spent time in refugee camps.  Many of these people are scared of openng their mouths.

We had a lot of Cambodians working for us.  They were great workers.  I attended several Cambodian weddings and festivals.  Had a good time.

Re: Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

Actually most of these people ONLY got raises when the minimum wage went up

Generally true for most locations.  In some areas, they have to pay higher as no one will work for min. wage.  You forgot that Timmies employees have zero benefits, no sick leave, no gold-plated pension, no disability, no precription plan, no dental plan.

Re: Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

lots of people it's called VOLUNTEERING--and less than 10% of teachers help out with extra curricular activities

Thats 10% more then any other fields I know of

That is interesting.  The last company I worked for, we had many who went out for things like the Labatt's 24 Hour Relay, The Corporate Challenge and many other volunteer activites.  None of this was paid hours.

Myself, I have been a volunteer all my life including 21 years in the Lions Club.  We raised money for kid's activites including hockey, figure skating, baseball, soccer, Scouts Cubs, Brownies, school programs, sports days, etc. etc.

My wife was an Optimist member.  They raised funds for lots of kids activities as well.

No Ambition,No Goals Most of the Time minimum education no 100k in debt for school ... I am 30 years old and have yet got anywhere close to using 100k in benefits maybe about 10k in benefits.. I worked at Timmies for a year and a bit and along with me at the time Most of us were idiots with no ambition and when I was there you didn't need sick time you just called in whenever you wanted and nobody ever cared..Also alot of them are justr working there as a stepping stone in there young to late teens With good health,Great Teeth an not to many chances of being hurt and needing disabilit

Just to cover it all I know there are some Educated people with lots of school debt working at timmies waiting for there break but the Majority are putting into it what they are getting out of it ..

Re: Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

When you pay EI you do it knowing what you get and what it's for and if you ever get hurt and need it they are not going to say OOO we changed that sorry you get nothing,...

Never collected EI.  If I was out of work, I got off my ass and found a job.

WSIB (as it is now called) regularly screws injured workers out of money.  My son was disabled at work.  Had three doctors and a chiropractor backing up his claim.  He still had to get a lawyer to fight them tooth and nail to get a pension.  They tried retraining him - each time for a job that he could not do with his injuries (huge waste of tiemand money).  They put him into on-the-job training - in jobs that he was restricted from doing.  He co-operated with everything they asked him to do and his injuries got gradually worse.

He finally (after 7 years) got a pension.  These are supposed to be permanent until you are 65.  In the past three years, they have cut him down from $1900 a month to just over $900 a month.  He is supposedly allowed to work within his limitations - he works at Mac's milk for minimum wage.  This work is not supposed to affect his pension.  So why has it been cut down.  Well, he would have to pay for another lawyer to find that out.  Essentially, at 35 years of age, he has given up.

Re: Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

IF what you are saying is a fact then why did my mother with 166 days lose ALL of her banked time and My Aunt with 183 banked sick lose ALL of her time .. If what your saying is a fact this would not make sense ...

I would think that they should be asking that.  My friend, Bruce, retired recently from over 30 years of teaching.  He had never used a sick day.  He got the maximum at time of retirement - $46,000.  He lost the rest.  So why your relatives lost all of theirs - sounds fishy to me.  Sounds like the union didn't do their homework (no pun intended).

Re: Ontario Teachers vs Government Standoff

1 More thing just to be Clear when I talk Volunteering I mean at your place of work .. Not runs for cnacer and stuff like that

Why?  That was expected of us as employees.  I consider it a part of my job.  Things like that are noticed on performance reviews and at promotion time.

Wouldn't have done it otherwise.  I was already volunteering plenty.

My son is 26.  Hs worked at Timmies for 10 years.  Went to Western University for four years and graduated.  Not a penny in debt because banked all his money for his education.  Didn't buy a car.  Didn't spend much money - well maybe on girlfriends.  He was highly motivated.  He is now a Supervisor at a Timmies in London.  He gets all the hours he wants.  Frequently works 8 days straight and gets lots of 48 hour plus weeks.

Why - because he loves what he does.  Do your job, go home at the end of the day, and not worry about work.  Maybe it was seeing his dad get all those phone calls at home or being called out at all hours of the night and day.  He is happy.

He does get perks from his boss, because his boss appreciates him.  I wish I could say I was always happy in my job.
