eBay Buyer Protection & Buyer Fee roll out ( UK eBay ) the shape of things to come...

The world of online shopping is changing, shipping untracked basically means you will wait much longer for your payments...

...parts of this will be in North America by next year, if it works well in the UK, I am sure.

https://channelx.world/2025/02/ebay-buyer-protection-buyer-fee-roll-out/

eBay’s changes for Private Sellers kicked in from the 4th of February. It appears to be a gradual roll out and has been seen first in the electronics categories. Buyers will see the price they’ll pay on the item page, in search and checkout… but it’ll now be rare to see a nice round number as the price from Private Sellers, as the Buyer Fee is being included.

Buyer Protection Fee

As part of Buyer Protection, starting from today, a fee will be included in the item price when purchasing from private sellers, paid for by the buyer to eBay. Buyers will only ever pay what they see, so there are no surprises at checkout.

Payment after delivery

Also starting from today, UK-based private sellers will also be paid after item delivery. Funds will typically be available in your eBay balance two calendar days after delivery confirmation. Pending funds can also be used to buy postage labels and refund buyers.

Recommendation to use tracked delivery

We know it’s important for you to get paid fast, and that’s why eBay are recommending that private sellers use a tracked delivery service, either through Simple Delivery or arranging for local collection, to get your funds as soon as possible. Using tracked delivery services can also provide a better customer experience for your shoppers, and for you, with sellers seeing a 50% decrease, on average, in buyer complaints and queries when using tracked delivery.

Shipping untracked

eBay have heard your feedback and understand that shipping costs are particularly top of mind for low price items. When you’re selling a single item for £10 or less, and it’s sent untracked, funds will now be available 24 hours after you receive positive buyer feedback. This will be live by the end of February.

Since the launch of Simple Delivery, eBay have added Royal Mail as an additional delivery partner. eBay will continue to evolve their Simple Delivery offering, with even more features set to launch in the coming months to further simplify the shipping process for private sellers. You seem misinformed...

As we wave goodbye to January, I wanted to update you on exciting changes coming in February, and how we’re continuing momentum to make our marketplace the best it can be for our community.

This month, you can look forward to a series of new features that have emerged from your feedback, or been improved based on what you've told us. Whether you're shopping or selling, these updates will make your transactions simpler and more secure, to elevate the buying and selling experience on eBay.

Introducing Buyer Protection

At the end of 2024, we changed our fee structure, making it free to sell for private sellers. We know that fees are one of the biggest barriers to selling and we've seen a great reaction to the change, with an increase in the number of new sellers coming to eBay to list and sell.

As well as being a positive change for our private sellers, it’s also great news for buyers, as it means more of the things they love - and it's always good news for business sellers when there are more buyers on the platform. As part of our continued commitment to improving your experience on eBay, this month we’re launching Buyer Protection to give buyers more confidence and security when shopping.

Starting from 4 February, Buyer Protection will be live to give buyers more peace of mind when shopping on ebay.co.uk. To minimise any potential disruption on our platform, the Buyer Protection fee will be gradually rolled out across items listed by private sellers, starting in Electronics and coming to all eligible categories in the following weeks.

As part of Buyer Protection, from 4 February, all buyers and sellers will get 24/7 customer support where you can connect with a real person by phone whenever you need, or start a chat to get quick answers.

What’s changing for private sellers?

By removing barriers for private sellers and making it free to sell and simpler to list, we’ve seen many more sellers join the platform to bring buyers the unique inventory that they love. Buyer Protection is the next step, to ensure they keep coming back.

As part of Buyer Protection, starting from 4 February, a fee will be included in the item price when purchasing from private sellers, paid for by the buyer to eBay. Buyers will only ever pay what they see, so there are no surprises at checkout.

What’s changing for business sellers?

Starting from 4 February, as a business seller, Buyer Protection is included for free for you and your buyers. They’ll get the same protection, without any additional costs.

When it comes to payouts, nothing will change for business sellers, who will still receive payouts as they do today.

We’ve also heard your feedback and know it’s important for business sellers to have a fair and equitable marketplace. So, we’ll continue to monitor trading activities on eBay, to help business sellers using a private account transition over to a business account, or restricting selling activity as necessary.

eBay Simple Delivery pricing change for Private Sellers (UK eBay)

Beginning from the 10th of February 2025, pricing for the Simple Delivery programme will be updated. These changes will apply to all new and historic listings.

Simple Delivery is available for private sellers in the UK listing eligible items. Both item and buyer delivery addresses must be in the UK, as the labels are only available for UK carriers. With Simple Delivery, you no longer have to figure out what delivery service to use when listing your items, and you get a prepaid and tracked label that fully covers your item.

Different pricing may apply where you have chosen to opt-out of a carrier.

Using Simple Delivery makes sending items much easier for Private Sellers:

  • eBay selects the appropriate delivery service for you, providing you with a pre-paid label and QR code (to take to your drop-off location so they can print the label for you) with full tracking
  • All postage labels will be currently be from Royal Mail and Evri
  • Your item is fully protected against loss and damage during transit
  • Your seller performance standards and service metrics will not be affected by late delivery, as long as you despatch within your stated handling time
  •

@brettjet38

How do they create a shipping label when they don't have the goods in their possession or how it will be packaged? Similar to a seller in North America for sending a label for a return. Who knows what box the customer will use or if it was an economical/reasonable one to use?

They do have the goods, the Seller makes the label and takes the package to the drop off location.

Thankfully, I won't be selling on eBay by that time. I am done with eBay micro-managing sellers and taking control of their listings, etc and if/when any selling site starts manipulating the seller's shipping process well, then it is time to move on...............................

Recent little updates to the payment policies in the UK for (Private) sellers - who ship untracked.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/getting-paid/getting-paid-items-youve-sold?id=4814

When sales proceeds will be available

Starting 6 February, 2025, eBay will typically make the sales proceeds of private sellers available in your eBay balance after the order has been successfully delivered, unless subject to a hold. We'll use these criteria to determine when an item has been successfully delivered:

  • For tracked deliveries, funds will be available 2 calendar days after we receive confirmation from the tracked service that the delivery was successful
  • For local collection, funds will be available within 24 hours after you enter the 6-digit confirmation code the buyer received by email, or when the buyer scans the QR code
  • If the item includes Authenticity Guarantee - opens in new window or tab, funds will be available within 24 hours after the item is successfully authenticated
  • For items sent via Global Shipping Programme - opens in new window or tab, funds will be available within 24 hours after the item is delivered to the UK Shipping Centre
  • For untracked deliveries, or tracked deliveries with no delivery confirmation, funds will become available 14 calendar days from the order date

Your funds will appear as Pending in the Payments tab in My eBay or Seller Hub. You'll be able to use your pending funds to purchase postage labels and issue refunds to the buyer.

Funds can also appear as Pending when they are awaiting verification. You’ll see these funds as Pendingon hold. If your funds are Pendingon hold, we'll send you an email and may request information to help resolve the issue. Visit our article on Payments on hold - opens in new window or tab and our Payments Terms of Use - opens in new window or tab for more information.

eBay Buyer Protection & Buyer Fee roll out ( UK eBay ) the shape of things to come...

...and it begins, the reactions also.

eBay buyers must now pay extra charges when purchasing items from private sellers from this week, as part of new fees and rules.

The auction giant has introduced a 'buyer protection fee' on every private seller transaction of 75p per item.

Buyers are now also charged 4% of the item price up to £300, and 2% of any portion between £300 and £4,000. Many say this unfairly penalises low-value items - the flat 75p fee pretty much doubles a low-value item.

So, for a £20 item, buyers will pay a 75p flat fee plus a 40p variable fee, so an extra £1.15, plus shipping.

Two £5 items from the same listing, will also have the 75p flat fee added plus the same 40p variable fee (4 per cent of £5 x 2).

For a 99p item, there's still a 75p fee, plus 3p for the percentage, meaning 78p is added to the 99p listing before postage is added on top.

But a positive is that there aren't any additional fees above £4,000, meaning there is an effective cap of £86.75.

The revolt and the pushback begin, this will be interesting as the results of all this will dictate how bits get put in place on other eBay sites in the future.

As eBay UK Buyer Fees & Simple Delivery Rollout, Users Share Tips To Circumvent New Policies

UPDATE 2-11-25

eBay has now edited their UK Fee Avoidance Policy page to explicitly call out it is a violation to try to avoid the Buyer Protection Fee.

And in one of the few UK community threads on this topic allowed to continue, eBay staff are "reminding" users that if they do this, eBay might just have to suspend their accounts - because, threats are a great way to engage with your customers, right?

A very intersting read and a good site for information...
