Hi @joie7460! The tax team said:

The requirement for taxation is based on the transaction, not the item. The buyer in each individual transaction separately pays the GST/HST/QST/PST as applicable.

@mrdutch1001 @joie7460 In another post, the "tax team" states eBay is "voluntarily" making the change. Unless I'm misreading, that "voluntarily" suggests they are not at all being forced to collect for non-registered sellers...

. . . but I’m guessing that the status quo will become a less than desirable option for eBay. Why else would Amazon have been so (relatively) quick to implement this?

Re: Canadian for used item

@marnotom!I purchased an item from Amazon.ca in February of this year that shipped from a US warehouse and (I assume but don't remember if it was) a US seller and I was not assessed taxes at all. The HST column literally stated "$0.00" and shipping was free because I have prime. I have the invoice to prove it.

Whatever Amazon implemented, they didn't do it correctly (or at all).

Re: Canadian for used item

The taxes could have been estimated and folded into the cost of the item. On the rare occasion when I’ve been able to compare prices for the same item on AZ.ca and .com that’s shipped out of the States, the one on the Canadian site was way more expensive, and when I started to go through checkout for funsies, there were no tax charges either.

Re: Canadian for used item

If you go to  used store, you are paying them taxes. Not really different.
