Tax on used items? who’se crazy now?

Why would you think Canadians are going to fall in line paying sales tax on a used item that already was charged tax as new. This is why I hardly used my eBay account any more. First, you demanded our SIN which I never give out, so you could report - and now you want to charge us on items that have already been charged tax - I can't imagine many people are going to bother using eBay -mif we have to,pay tax might as well get new!

Charging taxes on used items is hardly a new thing.

Your personal used items are your personal used items. No one, not even the Government has the right to them, unless you commit a very serious crime and selling your personal used items is not a crime at all. The Government only cares if you make money on an items you sell, they want you to report/declare it on your taxes. I have a 4000 blu-ray collection that i have accumulated over the years and bought them all new and paid TAXES to the government for them too. Now if i want to unload them to make room in my home, i sell them for 1/2 of what i paid them and mark them as used, i have to declare the 1/2 ? makes no sense.

Further to this why would I take a chance on Ebay anymore then and not just use a proper used store website. Say I am buying golf clubs, I can go to various specialty golf stores online that have a huge inventory of golf equipment and it is shipping from them not a random person who lets face it may or may not ship the products. I have done well both selling and buying but out of every 10 there is at least one buyer or seller that scams or tries to and I have to wait forever to claim and out that money. Just happened last week, still waiting for a seller in Quebec to actually ship the item not just register a tracking number so he gets paid and not actually ship it. Out 900.00 until I can start a claim and then have them actually credit it.  I don't usually make a fuss about this sort of thing and just take it an move on drawing the line at paying taxes for some dudes used wedge or driver. Even if it not Ebay who created this mess I still can't support it.

The reality is that this is not unique to eBay, this taxation on buyer's purchases will be applicable to ALL large online marketplace facilitators.(eBay,Etsy,Amazon,etc.)

You are not paying taxes on the DVDs.

Your customers are paying taxes on the purchase of the used DVDs.

Just as you paid taxes on the purchase of them as new DVDs.

The action not the things.

but out of every 10 there is at least one buyer or seller that scams or tries to

Those losses are tax deductible.

Even on your personal income tax.

You are taxed on your income from profits.

This taxation applies to the buyer-it is the buyer that will be paying the sales tax...no different than B&M retail outlets.

Ya I'm just about done with EBay.  No small seller protection against fraudulent buyers, charging higher and higher sales fees for listings making it not worth it.  Now you want to take tax from my money of selling used?   I'll just as well sell it on Kijiji and FB market place and keep all the profits to myself.  I'm pretty sure this will be the phasing out stage for me on eBay finally.

The BUYER pays the sales tax!  Good luck with that local classified market, which has as many issues/problems as eBay>non-payers, time wasters/no-shows, scammers, etc.

I paid tax on the used SUV I bought at the beginning of the pandemic and I pay tax on many of the used items I purchase from Value Village.

Buyers from the US, EU, UK, Australia, and others have been charged taxes on their eBay purchases for some time now.  There's still buying happening.

oh please, Cut the dramatics!

3 years ago, more than half of the USA states jumped aboard the "internet taxation" ... and now more than 40 states participate in it(45 to be exact plus the District of Columbia)....

USA sellers in the USA responded exactly the same way! Thought this was the end of the world for them!

This is a tax applied to the BUYER's purchase...It is the buyers that are paying the tax...

When the dust settled over the USA's "internet taxation process"...sellers went back to selling and buyers went back to buying..

This isn't just applicable to eBay...this taxation process will be required by all the large marketplace facilitators, just the same as the USA's "internet taxation" isn't unique to eBay...

Did eBay die because of the USA "internet tax?"

This may be a change to the eBay as we know it,but life goes on!!

Accept,adjust,adapt and carry on!

This may make sense to those who have an eBay store and sell thousands of dollars -mi am speaking about someone who sells the odd thing now and then because they want,to get rid,of something they bought and paid taxes in who will now have to reduce their, price to account for eBay's bigger piece of the pie.

I agree - it started with their policing - and now this. The government won't see a penny of this money but I guarantee eBay's,profits, will rise considerably and sellers will have to lower their price to account for eBay's,charge. It's ridiculous- and having said that, I'm closing my account, enough already.

and it doesn't have to make sense to you or anyone else but it is still a law..it's Canadian LAW...

and it's the BUYER's that pay the taxes, seller's pay the fees on the TOTAL transaction, including any applicable taxes the buyer paid.

If this is new Canadian taxation process is a deal breaker for you, you have a choice....accept, adapt, adjust and carry on...  OR MOVE on!

The rest of us will continue to use eBay as we WILL accept, adapt, adjust and carry on!!...as we know this isn't about eBay...this is about a Canadian taxation process that encompasses other online selling sites too. Those who do not read nor understand what this Canadian taxation process actually is, and keep blaming eBay, are the ones who will have the most difficulty in online selling/buying going forward.

Canadian buyers will get used to it, in time,  just as the USA buyers did for the "internet" taxation that has been in effect in the USA for some time now...
