A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

I'm sorry for bringing this subject up again ......

I haven't used Light Packet for a while; I was using the reduced Small Packet rate on Snap Ship until the end of July and, this month, I've only shipped lettermail in Canada or parcels.

I just want to confirm that Light Packet is still available at the postal outlets?  And we need to attach the CN 22 customs form and either our own stamps or metered postage at the postal outlet?

I was just wondering about the option to fill out the customs form online and print and affix the barcode to the package.  Does that include or exclude Light Packet?

Also, I'm in the midst of placing an order with Canada Post.  I see that their Labelopes are still available and I thought I could order a quantity of the CN22 form but I couldn't find it.  Do we have to rely on the good graces of the postal outlet to give us a half-dozen at a time?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

Light packet is still available at the PO.

As far as I know,  you can only get the CN22 at the PO and they can't be ordered on line.

I think you can fill out the CN 22 on line but personally it is quicker top do it manually. Make sure you include the HS code in the description of the item section.

I do it all manually, the air mail sticker, CN22 filled out and then take it to the PO for a label and stamp if I need private insurance, or put stamps on and drop it in the mail box at the outlet.

Just a passing thought-- if you photocopied the C22 and taped it to your package, would the RCMP come knocking at your door?

It's silly to have to spend your own money on ink and paper when in theory these should be available freely.

I've called Canada Post and am currently on hold.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

The young woman in Montreal tells me the 'green label' is still available for order.

But she didn't think Canada Post would recognize photocopies.

Don't take this as the final word. She checked on the availability but the other question was more an informed opinion.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

I do the same thing as you.  I label my package manually at home.  I also get a stack of the CN22 forms & fill them out at home & take my parcel to the PO.  I also have a stack of Air Mail stickers at home to put on. But I have never included the HS code in my description. Never had a problem with that in all my 15 years of selling.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

The CN22 hasn't been a green label for a few years.  It is white, 2 copies, original sticks to package, copy to staple to your sales info.  It is marked "Small Packet CN22" and my PO gives me a big stack when I ask for them.  Check off "Air" and affix an Air Mail sticker to be certain to get Light Packet handling.  Although export info on the Canada Post site refers to the requirement to affix the CN22 to Light Packet shipments, and gives a product code, there is no way I found to order them.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

Thanks for the reminder jt! I need to order labelopes and air mail stickers again.

BTW, I just used Shippo and it cost me $8.39 for a Small Pkt. label to the UK, item weighed under 200 gms. Is Light Packet much cheaper?

I've never used air mail stickers.  I didn't think it was necessary for the U.S. ..... maybe I'll start.

As far as Light Packet is concerned, it appears that Canada Post doesn't even publish the rates any longer; I couldn't find them online anywhere.  I used to have a sheet with all the rates but I can't find it.  I relied on PayPal to show me the various rates.  If anyone has a link to the rates, I'd appreciate it.

When I first started selling 11 years ago, we used to use the CN 22 form ... it's like going back in time.

Light Packet to UK under 200g is $10.10 -- more expensive.

Only the weight range between 251-300g is less expensive for International Light Packet.

I managed to get 8 of them at the postal outlet this afternoon .... that's all they could spare, I was told.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

To USA:

051-100g ..  2.95 O/S lettermail (stamp rate)
101-200g ..  5.15 O/S lettermai (stamp rate)l
001-200g ..  6.84 Light Packet

001-250g ..  7.05 Small Packet (via Shippo)
201-300g ..  8.60 Light Packet
251-500g ..  9.25 Small Packet (via Shippo)

301-500g .. 11.75 Light Packet

Light packet shaves a few cents for 0-200g and 251-300g, otherwise Small Packet (via Shippo) is less expensive.

International (UK/Western Europe):

051-100g ..  5.90 .. O/S lettermail (stamp rate)

001-250g ..  8.29 .. Small packet (air) (via Shippo)
001-200g .. 10.10 .. Light Packet

001-250g .. 10.27 .. Small packet (air) counter rate

101-200g .. 10.30 .. O/S lettermail

201-300g .. 13.46 .. Light Packet

251-500g .. 15.??  .. Small packet (air) (via Shippo)

251-500g .. 19.75 .. Small packet (air) counter rate

201-500g .. 20.60 .. O/S lettermail (stamp rate)
301-500g .. 24.57 .. Light Packet

Light Packet for International is only worth considering for the 251-300g weight range.

Thanks for that info.  If the prices are almost the same, it would be worth it to use Shippo and save the time spent in filling out the customs form.  I'm waiting until after the Webinar later this month to start using Shippo.  I so disliked it when I first tried it out that I never went back.  But I'll get used to it, just like all the other changes we've faced.

It makes the customer think you care. So it's worthwhile.

Dear Ghu, I'm cynical today.

Tried once more to make a Shippo label. This is the fourth attempt (I don't use labels much) and fourth failure.

For the pennies I might save, Snap Ship  is just fine with me.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

I never bothered with the HS code with my light packets and never had issues. And really now I only use them for the 251-300g weight class packages. The shippo small packet discount is nice and I really like how it has a barcode printed. Makes some customers think it's tracked and I think it does help discourage INR scams.

PS. I also put airmail stickers on everything I mail to remind buyers that I indeed ship air lol.

Re: A Couple of Questions About Light Packet

One of the notes in the back of my bookkeeping book (I'm so old school, an actual paper book.) is a list of my most commonly used HS codes.

Only takes a second to look them up that way.

My old method of bookkeeping was hard to file.
