COVID-19 Public update

Date posted: March 15, 2020

Signature items

As the situation caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) quickly evolves, we want to assure you that all of us at Canada Post are doing everything we can to keep our employees, customers and the communities we serve safe.

Following the direction of the Public Health Agency of Canada, we continue to introduce new safety measures to help contain the spread of COVID-19. Until further notice, these safety measures will now include a change to how we deliver the door-to-door items that normally require a signature.

    • To help minimize points of close contact in our communities, we will no longer be requesting signatures for any deliveries to the door. This will eliminate the need for scanners and stylus pens to be passed back and forth during the delivery process of these items.

    • Instead, where possible, our delivery agents will apply our safe drop process. This means they will leave these items in your mailbox or outside your door if it’s safe to do so. Where it’s not possible to safe drop, our delivery agent will leave a notice card indicating the post office where you can pick up your items by showing proof of identity.

    • To receive the following items only: Registered, Xpresspost Certified, Proof of Identity, Proof of Age, COD (collect on delivery) and items where custom fees are due, please know that we cannot release these items unless a signature is provided. You will receive a notice card indicating the post office where you can pick up your items by showing proof of identity and signing. If you are sick or under self-isolation, please arrange for someone to pick up these items in your place.

Canada Post will continue to monitor the rapidly evolving situation around COVID-19, and to actively follow the guidance and safety recommendations of the Public Health Agency of Canada.

We will let you know about any changes we make to our processes that will help increase the collective safety of our communities. If you have general concerns about the safety of the mail, we would like to assure you that the World Health Organization continues to state that mail and packages are safe to handle, including those from incoming countries.

During this difficult period, as we continue to connect and to proudly serve you, please know that your safety and the safety of our employees remains our top priority.

Do you know what the difference is between Xpresspost and Xpresspost Certified ? Does certified simply mean they want a signature?  Thank You

It would probably be wise for buyers who are not home during the day to post a NO SAFE DROP notice on their mailbox and pick up parcels at the local PO instead.

(1) Buyers can set up a ... Flex Delivery... option with Canada Post.

All parcels will be sent to a postal outlet of the buyer's choice, without any extra cost, and picked up at this postal outlet.  No parcels will be left at the buyer's residence.

(2) With ..... Xpresspost, Expedited Parcel  and  Regular Parcel .....A seller can add a signature option to a parcel at a price of $1.75.  If the parcel is valued at more than $200  the signature option is automatically added to the cost of postage.

They won't ask for signature even if you pay for it .

@cumos55 Thanks for the heads-up.

Has eBay updated their policy in regards to this update? Given the signature is required on items sold over $200.

And is a signature required with the standard Do Not Safe Drop pick-up option? I have always mandated this anyhow but everyone is adapting fast.

Signature is required on ebay for values over $750.

It is Canada Post that wants signature if the package is insured for more than $200.

Got this email from Canada Post.

Message to customers about Canada Post service guarantees

As Canada Post continues to operate during this unprecedented situation, we expect to face ongoing challenges. We are prepared to adapt to the rapidly changing circumstances around COVID-19, including implementing our contingency plans that will enable us to serve our customers in communities across Canada.

As a result of potential impacts related to our local facilities and air transportation, we are letting you know that effective today (March 18) Canada Post will be suspending our On-time Delivery Guarantees for all parcel services, until further notice. This means that some residents and businesses may begin to experience slower than normal delivery times.

We would like to assure you that as we continue to proudly serve businesses and consumers across the country with all of our products and services, we will strive as best we can to meet our delivery standards.

Like many of you, during this difficult period we are working hard to keep our operations running while also protecting the health and safety of our employees and customers.

We thank you for your patience and understanding throughout these challenging circumstances. We will continue to keep you updated on any changes regarding our services and operations.

The reason we want to use Signature Confirmation on shipments is so that we can prove to eBay and Paypal that the parcel was actually delivered to an adult human.

Without it, we automatically lose any NotReceived Dispute.

Since I rarely use tracking of any sort (my items are cheap and my customers frighteningly honest), I've taken to looking up the extended zipcode (eg 90210-1111).

My reasoning is that there are enough complaints about bogus deliveries on dotCOM, where the seller ships to a zipcode vaguely near the buyer, but he never sees it.

With the extended zipcode, the shipment, I believe, is more likely to actually get to the buyer.

USPS has a very poor zipcode system if those complaints are true.  And eBay should be insisting on the extended codes if true.
