Canada Post warning for Ireland shipments

October 2021:

The introduction of Brexit and new Value Added Tax (VAT) rules in the European Union (EU) has been accompanied by increased scrutiny by Irish customs authorities and the Irish postal operator An Post. Canada Post customers have experienced significant delays and returned parcels. Several returned parcels include An Post labels indicating “Return to sender. Not customs compliant. Item must have valid electronic CN23.” Canada Post confirmed that these parcels were accompanied by the requisite Electronic Advanced Data. Irish customs authorities are also mandating provision of a Harmonized System (HS) Code on all shipments effective immediately.

Canada Post recommends shippers follow these measures:

  • Consider warning your customers or recipients in the Republic of Ireland about lengthy delays, possible denied entry and/or supplemental delivery charges when they place online orders.
  • Customs information must always be accurate and complete. Be sure to declare the full retail value of goods. Provide a detailed description of all contents.
  • While a Harmonized System (HS) code is not mandatory for postal shipments, it is currently being demanded by customs authorities for entry to the Republic of Ireland. If senders cannot provide an accurate HS Code, they should consider suspending shipments to the republic of Ireland until further notice.

The EU postal systems as per their websites are also requesting that the receivers phone(cell) is included with the documentation along with an email address. Makes contacting the customer much easier if their are concerns with documentation.

I wonder if that means that Canada Post is now sending electronic customs information to all of the EU countries or if there is still a problem with some countries.
