Dishonest Buyers on the rise???? Lets share our stories...

Are Dishonest buyers on the rise this month? Or is this just a crazy fluke????

Until this month, I had never had an issue with Buyers claiming that they 'didn't receive their items... and I send out quite a few packages through 'letter mail' some with & some with-out tracking every month - depending on the value of the item(s)... I hadn't thought that 'this' was an issue, that is, until I got TWO 'unreceived' this month!

One of the buyers was requesting a refund over a week before the estimated time of delivery! In one of the emails that the buyer sent me says (Cut & Pasted)  In my opinion, this buyer had NO INTENTIONS TO EVER PAY FOR THEIR ORDER!!! I spoke with multiple eBay reps (we reviewed the emails & pics) and when all was said and done, I was put in the position that I had to give the refund - to save myself a negative strike. This buyer had requested a refund 3 times... two of which were before the estimated time of delivery. I quoted eBay reps the policy, and reviewed buyer fraud... all of which this dishonest buyer was red flagged for... eBay's special team that investigates bad buyers are looking into this one and claim they will let me know the outcome. So the buyer gets investigated and I am out my item, time and money on this one.

The second one was a couple of days shy of the '30' day mark of the estimated time of delivery - I left positive feedback & they requested a refund for 'undelivered item' with-in a few minutes! - I gave the refund, and went back and added a note under the feedback that I had left them - adding a note to inform other sellers that this buyer claimed 'undelivered' after receiving my positive feedback & that they had been refunded. -- I hope that my note will help other sellers when they review how they deal with this buyer in the future.

Both buyers: BLOCKED

I just got one too. Circumstances were a little strange. Her email address was in one city but Paypal address was different city & state. Never noticed this till she sent email asking for tracking #. Sent untracked - my items are lower priced & tracked shipping especially on the first tier at over $14 just way too expensive. Did the refund to avoid the negative but she has not answered 2 of my emails re clarifying the shipping address. Not that it matters still have to refund without the tracking.

I have never blocked a buyer it would like to block this one. Is there a way to block on all listings at once?

Scammers look for free shipping from out of country sellers. They know that inexpensive items aren't worth the extra cost of tracking so likely won't come with it. Only domestic includes tracking. So they open an "item not received" case and they know eBay automatically sides with the buyer..been there! Don't do it. Unfortunately the cost with tracking carries with it complaints on fb of high ship. They need to be reviewed better by eBay and have these unfair comments removed. Sellers can't win here!

Like I said earlier in the thread, the dishonest buyers and sellers really poison the well for everyone else that follows.

Without tracking if a buyer opens a INR case the seller has no choice but refund.  Refusing could go even worse for the seller in the long run.  That's why its important to REPORT them.  If they are making a habit of  it and EVERY seller reports them, they will get caught much sooner.

I agree that if a seller is using the automatic CALCULATED shipping and then gets complaints in FB about the high cost, it should be removable.  Just as instantly removable as all those complaints about GSP costs.  I don't see any difference between the 2 issues, just different countries and eBays.

I find this discussion interesting. I haven't sold anything on eBay in years (and have no intentions of ever doing it again) but have sold a few things on other online sites during the past year. Luckily I've had no problems with Paypal and chargebacks but everything was sent tracked since the items were fairly expensive. People I know have not been so lucky.

Years ago (mostly in the 90s and pre-Paypal), I extensively bought/sold/traded records from around the world. Back then you'd send a money order or cash to the seller and patiently wait for them to receive it and send your package. I would regularly receive hundreds of dollars in a regular (sometimes registered) letter and send/receive expensive items through the mail via regular post. Over many years and thousands of letters and packages I think ONE went missing. Apparently with the advent of Paypal postal services the world over have gotten worse in recent years as it seems that items are "not received" more and more.

I used to get frequent surveys from Paypal and I would fill them out from a buyer perspective and give them high ratings. Once I did it from a seller perspective and pointed out how easy it was for scammers to claim refunds. I've never gotten another survey since.

No, I really think it is eBay. Or at least online commerce.

Anecdote is not data, but having sold by mail order since the Eighties, claims for non-delivery (or even late delivery) are much higher here than, for example, from our own website.

Note that we rarely use tracking because of the unnecessary expense. Most of our lower value items go LetterPost/Light Packet.

Although we take cc's directly, most of our new customers usePP, and many of our long term customers, even those who have been in the shop and met us, will prefer to use PP when shopping by mail/online.

That being said-- time for the Cookie Jar Insurance rant?
Sellers of low value and small items, which do not require Parcel Post handling and are usually automatically tracked, can use the cheaper Letter/Light Packet services which are not tracked as long as they self-insure.

This just means adding a few pennies, rarely more than a dime, to the asking or shipping price of every item.

Those virtual pennies go in a virtual Cookie Jar.

When faced with an Item Not Received complaint, the seller refunds from the Cookie Jar, BEFORE eBay gets involved.

This means no Disputes on the seller's record.

In most categories, complaints are few enough that the Cookie Jar may even turn a profit.

Always ask the unhappy customer to return the refund when the item arrives. This usually works in my experience.

The fault of the INR claims is not PayPal postal services but thieves.  PayPal makes that easy, but there really isn't any choice.  Most people are honest so eBay/PP has to think of their bottom line.  If every buyer had to just "hope" the seller would mail the item and if the seller didn't that's too bad, hardly anybody would take the risk of buying.  I know they used to, but to mail that money order or cash the seller had to divulge their real name and address.  That in itself can be a deterrent to ripping off a stranger.

INR claims is the main reason so many people want some sort of Canada Post scan.  Americans can send envelopes tracked for real cheap.  In Canada that would usually exceed the price of the item.  We all want tracked delivery for less than $2, but even an entry scan that would be accepted as "proof of shipment" and protect the seller would be better than the way it is now, that 100% risk to the seller.

It is the eBay/PP buyer protection,  not PayPal Shipping that causes all the INRs.  You read the buyer boards.  How many times a week is a buyer told that if a seller can't prove delivery the buyer gets a refund.  Who doesn't like free items?  Especially when the system facilitates it.  Americans have fewer problems with items coming this way now that First Class is tracked.  They can even track an envelope over the border but I forget if it is done online or at their post office in person.  In Canada we have no option that is comparably affordable to mail a dvd or game.  Hopefully with the new interest in overhauling Canada Post will make some cheap tracking available since the technology to do it is already there.   Have to wait & see I guess.
