Fees on invoice

I offered to a buyer in private that i would give him free shipping if the 2 items he wanted were bought together. I asked him to add to cart and request total then i could apply the discount. He's telling me to put free shipping on the listings cause of ebay fees charged on shipping cost, and he's a 700 score user. I thought fees were charged just after payment and we literally send invoice to avoid extra fees on shipping cost? I never sent invoices

Am i getting fooled i don't want to put free shipping on listings then he can buy just one

Maybe he's using the mobile app? After checking i can't find the request total in here

Fees are charged on the actual purchase price -- not what the original offer price was.

What you can do is put up special listing featuring the two items together -- and he can buy that instead.

Better safe, than sorry.

So if a buyer wants two items of $5.00 + $1.00 and he request total for his $12.00 order. If we send him an invoice of $10.00 we pay fees for $12.00? I'm not sure about this one it does not makes much sense. Any source or proof of it? I don't understand what's the point of sending invoices if it's true

We used best offer the sale is done but i'm curious about it. I'm tired to use the best offer and all them showing in my feedbacks, making me a prey to discount requests

The fees will be charged on 10 $ if you send invoice with free shipping.

As ypdc_dennis said, I would create a new listing with the 2 items and free shipping. As soon as he buys it, you need to end your other listings (don't end them before he buys, because you don't know if he will actually purchase them)

I'm not sure if you are on managed payments (I think we all are now?) but if so I believe the fees aren't charged until the "processing" which can't happen until the buyer pays, so if you send an invoice, the buyer pays from that then the fees should be on the invoiced amount. Before managed payments the fees were charged in two parts, one for the item and one for shipping - the item fee was charged immediately, the shipping wasn't until paid (because shipping amounts could change if you have multiple items, etc.)

Most of my items are auctions, it's very easy to send combined invoice. For Buy it Now items I've always had a problem since sometimes buyers could "request total" and other times I was told they couldn't and had to pay right away (I gave up years ago trying to find out why since the mystery wasn't solved.) Though I do think there's a difference when using the app or the main site. This may be why he wanted you to adjust the listing itself.

I know you mention you used to use "Make an Offer", you can set the lowest amount you'd accept automatically so you aren't drowning in low ball numbers. Also, in a case like the one you just had, you could have added the make an offer to the two items he was interested in, this way he's commited if you accept without paying until you send an invoice.

He's right. It does.

But those fees are the same ones as you pay on purchases, so there is no reason for him to get his knickers in a twist.

Either he's waaaay out of date (nearly 15 years) or he is telling you how to run your business. Neither of which inspires confidence in him as an advisor or as a customer.

There are many reasons for sellers to use Free Shipping, but that's not one of them. As you know, Free Shipping means the cost of shipping is part of the asking price.

Which is cheaper :  a $10 order with $2 shipping or a $12 order with Free Shipping?

In this case, he is asking for a $2discount on the total, and overthinking how you will describe it.
