It changed awhile ago but I don't think I made much mention of the red text. 

 

I like seeing this on my listings. I offer same-day dispatch for a reason, it's good to see that made prominent. And I'm glad that feature came to ebay Canada. I had complained we were being left behind when it was part of the display page on ebay.com yet we were still stuck with our old, dysfunctional estimated delivery dates within Canada that did not take into account actual postal codes. That was fixed and this was added. 

 

I'm very happy this was addressed. (I'd be even happier if it said one day as is the actual delivery standard for that distance but I'll take three.)

I'm curious -- how do you calibrate the guarantee for far-flung places in Canada?  Do you pay for Xpresspost, or some other service?  Or is there a disclaimer in the listing for destinations outside a certain parameter? 

 

For example, I'm fairly certain Expedited Parcel from your location in Winnipeg wouldn't make it to my door in SW Nova Scotia in 3 days.   Places like Nfld or remote areas of BC (particularly locations on northern Vancouver Island) would likely be equally uncertain.  

 

I'm just interested in how you manage this promise for all potential buyers who might see it, wherever located.   I've considered this sort of guarantee on some items, but the vagaries of shipping to the U.S. (I rarely sell within Canada) make it virtually impossible without spending money on Xpresspost.

Calculated Shipping takes the source postal code and destination postal code and gives an estimate based on actual days of delivery for the postal service selected. Like ebay.com does. This is new. It's an upgraded Calculated Shipping feature.

Yes, I thought that might be the case, but what I was asking was whether all your buyers are going to see this red 3-day guarantee on the listing and expect to get it?  I think if I were a buyer and saw "delivered in 3 days" I'd be upset when I got to the shipping estimate to see that it either didn't apply to my location, or didn't apply to the service I'd like to use.  

 

Or does eBay adjust what the potential buyer sees -- up front in the listing -- in that regard based on the buyer's actual location?  If so, that would be some comfort to the seller.  In other words, I wouldn't want to display a promise to all that couldn't be kept for all, if you understand what I'm getting at.  Otherwise, I'd be concerned this might seem like a bit of a bait-and-switch to some buyers.

I still prefer reasonable estimated time frames as there are NO guarantees for delivery unless a seller is using those guaranteed delivery methods. There are just too many variables for eBay or anyone else to state any kind of "guarantees". The very reason I do not state same day or next day dispatch(even though I may do so) and the very reason I could care less about jumping through eBay hoops &/or having top rated seller status.

Just trying to understand this, I always use calculated shipping, none of my listings show this feature. For Canada I use "expedited". I picked 3 different listings of mine, put in a postal code 225KM away, only in the shipping section did it have "estimated delivery 5 days" but nothing in red as your screen shot has. Also the estimated is wrong, it usually takes 2 days with the postal codes I used.

When you have calculated shipping set, the shipping info displayed when someone looking at a listing is based on where eBay thinks the viewer is located.

No, as MJ mentioned, ebay takes into account where the buyer is located and how long CP estimated deliver is.  She is seeing that on  her listings when using her own postal code .

If you check your listings now, do you still see that notice? When I use a Winnipeg postal code the estimated delivery time shows 4 days so of course the 3 days banner is not showing right now. I suspect that it will show only when same day shipping is valid. 

 

I wonder why they show delivery as 3 business days rather than the CP standard as one day? Actually, I think showing 1 day would be risky but if the set it up so that the calculator showed close by delivery was just 2 days, you would still see the 3 day delivery banner even when it was too late for same day shipping.

I hope that makes sense lol.  I know what I mean but it seems confusing when I type it.

I think that you would need to use same day shipping in order to show 3 day delivery. Plus, the one that MJ shows also has free shipping. I'm not sure if that is a requirement or if there is a banner that just says delivery in 3 days.

 

Off topic....how does the free returns work for you? I would think that it would get quite expensive... Do you get many returns? Have you noticed an increase in sales since you started it?

I started offering "free returns" about 6 years ago, I don't know what if any effect it has had on sales but I would assume at worst it means nothing and I'm sure for a few buyers it's a little extra incentive to hit the buy button.

 

In the past 6 years I've had ONE remorse return and on that one the buyer assumed he would be paying for return shipping, was surprised that it was free and offered to cover the cost. I declined the offer mostly because it was easier for me to provide the shipping label and make sure it was returned using the proper service level and declared correctly to avoid a mess with customs on the return (value was over $200).

 

I'm sure that if I was selling clothing or footwear I would not be offering free returns but for what I do sell (records, cd's, tapes mostly) returns are a non-issue, only 2 remorse returns in 19 years and a small number of SNAD returns that with the exception of one were all entirely my fault/error.

 

I offered free returns initially in an attempt to avoid "fake" SNAD returns back in the day when any SNAD return was a "defect/ding". when eBay changed things so that only return requests that a seller disputed and lost created a "defect/ding" I considered going back to paid returns but decided to wait until it became an issue. Doesn't seem like that is ever going to happen.
