Import taxes on commercial goods

Is it true that, when importing goods for commercial use, only the GST (5%) applies ? Provided it goes through a custom broker I guess... For example, if I buy collections/lots of stamps in the US for resale.

Thanks !

I can't say if anything has changed recently (I doubt it), Canada Customs only collects GST/HST + Duty (if applicable), doesn't matter if it's personal or commercial. Using a customs broker or self-clearence would be the same.

If you are registered to collect and remit sales taxes, you can get a credit for those on your imports.

If you are NOT registered to collect and remit sales taxes, no.

You will be paying both GST and your provincial taxes in whatever form they take in your province.

Note that when you sell on eBay, it is eBay which is collecting the applicable sales taxes for your buyer's location.

You have a duty-free allowance of $150Cdn on imports from the USA and a $40 tax-free allowance.

For other countries these allowances are only $20Cdn.

The taxes are both federal and provincial.

Those apply to personal imports, the rules for commercial imports are different, the OP asked about "Commercial Imports". Even then as far as I can recall the $150 only applies to goods brough into Canada by returning travellers not goods that are shipped to Canada.

CRA will collect PST and GST but again that is only for personal imports not commercial which are only subject to GST. It is assumed that commercial importers will be a) GST registered and b) PST registered/exempt or selling the goods to a PST registered seller who will collect the appropriate PST when the goods are sold to a final consumer.

No the $150 applies to personal imports too. I think the returning traveller one is $200 and has been for some time.

It was a change when the latest iteration of NAFTA was signed.

And led to a huge drop in complaints about the GSP.
