Item delivered a week ago, payment still on hold. Am I helping to fund eBay or PayPal?

I don’t usually post on message boards but I’m really curious as to whether mine is a unique situation or if this is a trend experienced by others. I am new to eBay despite having a 25 year career in IT and a couple months ago bought an item and all went really well so I decided to sell my first item.

The item sold almost right away and the buyer paid promptly. Payment was made on Sept 6 but the payment was placed on hold by eBay because I “don’t have sufficient selling history”. PayPal has my credit card information but they still held the payment. OK, I’m new to eBay so I can (reluctantly) accept that.

I shipped the item on Sept 9 since the item was sold on a Friday night and I submitted the tracking info as instructed. The details of the transaction show “This payment will be in your pending amount until September 20, 2019. It may be available sooner, once we know the transaction went smoothly.”

The item was delivered to the buyer on Sept 17 and tracking shows the confirmed delivery and yet the payment remains on hold now on Sept 24th, 7 days after confirmed delivery and 4 days after the sale specified by PayPal. My eBay account now shows the amount on hold until Sept 26 even though PayPal still shows Sept 20.  I’ve sent an email to PayPal and just got an automated reply with their policies. I’m trying to escalate it now but it should simply not be this difficult to get paid for an item that was sold and delivered a week ago.

I’m sure my $200 means little or nothing to eBay or PayPal and it’s not a huge amount of money but it is my money and they have no right to continue to hold it. It’s got me wondering if this is a pattern among users, especially new users, since one transaction is pennies in the large scheme of things but thousands of such transactions could mean these companies are using their users funds as working capital so I’m wondering how many people are experiencing the same type of thing.

Still a problem in 2023. I’ve been lied to multiple times by eBay chat function and call function. Was told last Thursday funds would be released as item is delivered showing tracking and buyer left positive feedback. Im beyond frustrated and I won’t sell on ebay again. Too many other platforms that don’t cause this headache. They say it’ll be released in the 14th day but given the experience I’ve had so far I don’t believe them for a second (and I can see others have had it held longer than they said). This is shameful!

and if you believe new sellers/infrequent/occcasional sellers don't get their payment funds held by other selling sites, then you are in for a B-I-G- surprise! This is NOT unique to eBay!

But good luck wherever you decide to start up again! OR choose to sell locally and await those challenges...

Why are you so diligently defending eBay? Just let these frustrated sellers vent.

I don't defend eBay per se, I tell it like it is because I sell on other selling sites and have that knowledge.

ZOMBIE POST FROM SEPTEMBER 2019

The problem with zombie posts is that the information and advice may be out of date and no longer correct.

EBay does not use feedback to assess member accounts. Even positive feedback from a buyer is no confirmation that the purchase has arrived. I've rec'd positive feedback on purchase, before I had even shipped, from a happy but confused new buyer.

The Hold I have seen most often described is 30 days, plenty of time for a shipment to arrive, or for the buyer to file an Item Not Received/ Not As Described dispute, if the transaction has gone south.

Exactly, the longer they hold onto your money the more they are making off of you!

That might be the case if the account it was held in was an  interest bearing account but it isn't.  There is a 30 day money back guarantee so they are likely making sure that if there is a problem you will be refunding the buyer, not them.

used eBay years ago

That makes you a returning or occasional seller, and as such eBay will Hold your customer's payment for 30 days against your performance.

Then your earnings will be transferred by Managed Payments to your checking account.

Do you have a Managed Payments account?

Paypal was sold off in 2015 and by 2021 it was no longer the payment processor eBay uses to pay you.

If you don't you will need a chequing account with a Canadian bank.

It can be in loonies or in USD, but not both and once you choose you cannot change it.

You will also be asked for secondary ID. I used my passport, DH used his driving license.

Many sellers have opened dedicated accounts kept very separate from their household accounts, including online banks.

Be careful, there is a running problem with Tangerine that has yet to be reliably solved.

Payments on hold

Additionally, we may place a transaction hold on funds depending on your seller status, changes to your account status, or other factors we use to help ensure a safe marketplace in all categories, regardless of whether the transaction is covered by our eBay Money Back Guarantee or not:

  • (This is your situation) New or infrequent sellers will experience transaction holds while learning best selling practices. This helps sellers become established and build a strong selling history on eBay. New sellers typically experience holds for up to 14 days, although sometimes it may be longer
  • Previously restricted or suspended sellers will experience transaction holds for 30 days after the restriction or suspension is lifted, while we confirm that the items have been successfully delivered
  • High priced items or unusual selling patterns may lead to transaction holds for up to 30 days to help us ensure that buyers don't have any issues with the order
  • The authentication process may lead to transaction holds for up to 30 days until the authenticity of items sold with eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee can be confirmed

You are a new member it is very normal to have holds on your account...
