Items Not Delivered Caser

Hi everyone. I've never has an item not delivered in Canada. I've had a couple of cases that were opened but then the items were eventually delivered. One case was for around $50 and the buyer paid me back through paypal. Another was by a US buyer who said he got the item but after a few paypal requests for a $5 item, he didn't bother or want to pay me back.

Today someone opened a INR for two 1964 hockey cards that sold for $60 USD. This is a repeat buyer with no complaints in the past and he already messaged me a week ago that he didn't receice the cards.

Anything less than $100 CAD I usually send without tracking. Anyone else have any delays as long as 6 or 7 weeks for a delivery accross Canada?

Thanks.

I usually hear from buyers about delayed delivery within a week of the estimated deadline. Doesn't happen often, maybe once a year over all my accounts.

I don't use tracking either, we both know why, but I do use Cookie Jar Insurance, which is just setting aside a small amount from each sale in a virtual Cookie Jar as an insurance premium to cover any losses like this or other minor problems.

Given what you have said about the buyer, and particularly that he is a repeat customer, I would probably curse Canada Post then refund him with a gentle note that he should let me know WHEN the cards arrive so we can settle up.

You can't "win" this, but you can keep a customer.

Hmm- the next time you ship to him, do use tracking. "For his protection".

Thanks for your advice. It really bugs me that this involves the tough 1964 Topps Tallboys cards.

I have seen delays as long as 45 or so days, within the same province. It is possible they will still arrive. The reason I know it has taken this long, is because I have had buyers reach out to me when their previously lost item arrived.

As you seem to already know, you should refund the INR before the deadline to avoid a defect. The buyer can be instructed to reach out to you if/when they arrive so that they can pay back the refund. It is not against eBay TOS to exchange Paypal/contact info with the buyer for these purposes.

If this is a regular customer, who you have sent untracked similar priced items to before, I would say it is very unlikely that they are acting in bad faith. Not that it matters, because when you send untracked your only recourse is to block the buyer to prevent future theft. You can't get your item or money back.

It is also possible that it was delivered to the wrong house on his block. Letters do sometimes get incorrectly sorted at the street level. Anyone who lives in a house has received a letter meant for one of their neighbours. If someone received it, they might have decided to keep it, or they might have returned it to Canada Post. If they dropped it back off at Canada Post and it gets returned to you, it can sometimes take 2-4 weeks from when it was returned to sender.

In short, while very rare, 40+ days is possible for delayed lettermail.

Did you send the card via Letter-post to the US? If so, and the cards were in toploaders/bubble mailer, there's a good chance it's stuck at American customs and will probably end up coming back to you because they've been really cracking down on the mailing of goods via Letter-post (see the numerous recent threads on the forums here regarding this).

I wasn't sure about this the first time I read the OP either, but after re-reading it, the last sentence seems to make it fairly clear that the shipment was within Canada.
