Potential significant letter mail increase coming in January....

From 99c to $1.24 for domestic, I believe I saw somewhere that US and International were increasing as well, hopefully not by 25% too!!!

This might be the place to mention that for the past few years, Canada Post has been giving one free domestic parcel shipment weekly in October to holders of Solutions for Small Business accounts.

If they do this again this year, and you can't use them all, there are women's shelters in the Territories which desperately need blankets and linens (and probably children's snow suits) which are very expensive to buy there, but cheap here.

Worth noting that Canada Post has been silent on this for 2024 so far. Nothing has been communicated to post offices as of yet.

I'm hoping the promotion continues this year, but with the current state of things I wouldn't be surprised if it was axed or downgraded in some way.

Since these rates need to be approved by parliament they have been published in the Canada Gazette Part 1 Volume 158 Number 36.  There is also a lot of supporting documentation included in the publication to justify the rate increase. Packet and parcel rates do not need approval and are not linked to these increases.

Here are the tables:

But unlike the "P" stamp, it remains valued at 30c.

I am curious as to where this information is consigned? Not that there would still be a lot of A stamps available 40+ years later...

The proposed 25% increase in domestic Permanent stamp rates would be accompanied by an across-the-board 25% increase on all Lettermail and Letter-post rates. They are really

hurting right now to do this, especially since they just raised the stamp prices 4 months ago. They will now have to reprint all the (non-permanent) stamps with new postage prices for the second time in eight months which is not a cheap undertaking.

There is typically a rate increase in September but it was pushed back to January this year, so if this stamp hike gets approved you'll see postage prices increase around the same time as stamp prices.

A major peril of all of these you can bet the farm there will be a price increase is the risk of drop off in use. For some they may have no choice but pay the piper. In others it could cause a backlash when it comes to buying or not. Now when something sells for me I have to figure out how many stamps I am going to need to cover the postage due. Wasn't this challenging in the past. From a buyers perspective many do not consider tax on postage as a thing.

Good question. Looks as though a clerk in Prince Edward Island had no idea four years ago:

Re: Potential significant letter mail increase coming in January....

Ouch, that's pretty substantial. If they're going to do that, I wish they'd at least bring in partial tiers at every 50g or add barcoded stamps to give limited tracking (at least between the source and destination PO). Heck, allowing oversize to go to 3cm and giving the limited tracking would probably result in them gaining a lot of market share against the other couriers.

Those rates are substantial enough that I could see a lot of lettermail based sellers scaling back or ceasing operation beyond what they already have listed.

Between the two price increases, that's a 67 cent increase for 100g, or an astounding $1.10 increase for 200g.

The 2 cm has to do with the sorting equipment limitations for lettermail.  3 cm is just too thick for that equipment to handle.

For eBay sellers, the expedited lite option (with no 2cm limit) is a good alternative for under 200g.

I (think) we use the same equipment as they do in the UK and they have a 2.5cm limit there (and I believe up to 1kg). I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the equipment can handle up to 3cm, but they obviously set it a bit lower to prevent issues. Can't companies that send out catalogues go up to 1kg and over 2cm in the oversized stream?
