Shipping DVD's in Canada

Wanted to sell some DVD's but unless I am missing something I can't see how one can do it without charging a arm and leg for shipping. I can mail a regular sized DVD using letter mail as I can get it in a package under 20mm, but there seems to be no shipping option for DVS in a larger case. At least shipping to the US one can use Small packet, but nothing close I can see in Canada?. Not sure how many buyers in Canada would want to pay $15.00 shipping or so for a used DVD, unless I give them away for literally free.

You are not missing anything!

If you have a DVD that is more than 2cm (packed) don't offer it for sale within Canada unless it's an expensive box set or similar.

Well you can offer it but as you say you won't be able to ship it for less than $10+ instead of $2 - $3.

Bummer that Canada Post doesn't offer something in between between Letter mail and parcel.

Small Packet has  (untracked) service starting at $7.18 Cdn (~$5.72 USD).

If you can fold that into your asking price, you can offer Free Shipping.

Which is never actually free of course.

It certainly is! I sell a lot of audio cassettes which are a bit thicker than a cd/dvd case, in order to get them below 2cm I have to crush the bubbles on one side of every bubble envelope, fortunately I have longish fingers and fairly small hands so I can get inside a #0 bubble envelope without too much trouble.

Canada is one of the few countries that does not offer a domestic Lettermail PACKAGE service.

yes if you can't get it through the 2 cm. slot then i would recommend bundling your items, to 6-10 items making it worth while to send by expedited package..  just a suggestion..

Does anyone have issues with shipping by letter mail with DVD's inside. Sales person at Canada Post said it is no-no, as it's supposed to be only for printed material. What about shipping to the USA, are they likely to reject or send back a letter mail with a DVD inside?

Oversized domestic lettermail is untracked and uninsurable so as long as it’s within 2 cm depth, it’s sender beware. As to exporting goods via lettermail to the USA or beyond, no. Don’t do that. I can’t speak for how often the rules are enforced because I’ve never tried breaking them.

Anything with a actual declared value mailed to the USA or Internationally should include customs paperwork.  HS Classification for customs purposes for a DVD or CD is 8523.40. Additional HS codes are available at the Canadapost Tools Page.  Including that information with your shipping label usually helps speed up the customs clearing process especially with items of higher value.

Inside Canada  I've never had any problems with returned oversize lettermail. Canada Post still has no equivalent to small packet for domestic mail (they did some experimenting/testing of something similar last summer, but nothing has been heard of since). I will continue to send dvds/cds that way until Canada post gets it's act together.

...

The postal rules between countries changed in January this year dividing letters into documents (letterpost) and goods (small packet).  Before then I used oversize letterpost for regular dvds and cds going outside Canada without problems.  I still use oversize international/USA letterpost for mailing magazines. Small Packet while more expensive does allow one to stop worrying about the 2cm thickness and does have bigger weight zones than letterpost.

...

If you are lucky enough to be near a cross border shipper (I'm not) then you can use them to mail your dvd  to the USA at cheap USPS domestic rates. ChitChatsExpress (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax), DYKpost (Calgary, Edmonton), RunninRed (Winnipeg), StallionExpress (Toronto) are the one's I've heard about.

The HS classification 8523 section has been revised (my reading of the messy entrails) to:

8523.49.30 is music cd (reproducing sound only)

8523.49.40 is dvd, bluray (reproducing sound, images)

8523.80.10 is phonograph records (vinyl)

...

Canada Post has not updated their HS list, so it still has the old code.

USA customs does not really care if the HS/tariff code is completely correct unless the shipment value is over $800 -- so the old code should still be okay.
