Shipping Within Canada--Oi!!

Has anyone noticed how expensive it is to ship within Canada??? To send a regular package out west from Ontario is around $16... Can send the same package to the USA for 11.99.... for example. This has come up more than a few times now. How do other Canadians manage their shipping within Canada. Perhaps, I'm missing something.

Just a general question, not about any particular item.

Thanks

I'm beginning to believe you all about the usage of Expedited instead of regular. What really bothers me is that I can ship the same item for less to the USA than I can if shipping out west... so what does that say about our government?  And did I hear correctly, are the rates for Canada Post going up yet again????

Rates already went up Jan 15, 2015 for this year.

Actually the date was January 12, 2015.

Canada Post's focus is internet sales..,,, Their promo relates to serving these sales... delivering the sales everywhere in Canada.

If we read carefully... major corporations are facing the reality that someone will visit the B& M... to see the product... and then buy off the internet.

Canada Post is a corporation and  like any other corporation... it must be profitable....

Canada Post is responsible to the Government of Canada....  and if we  stand back and take a good look...

The Government of Canada is like one big corporation...

All corporation must balance the books... Walmart, Sears, Superstore...and more....  and also eBay....

i'm guessing the 11.99 does not include tracking or insurance.

Good or bad, all CanPost packages inherently include tracking and insurance (the latter only if not glass/ceramics), hence the price.

And, as was stated earlier, Expedited (for eBay/Venture One) is cheaper and faster than regular parcel.

Tracking and insurance are available for

Expedite Canada

Expedite USA

Tracked Packet USA...... and also the more expensive options.

But NOT Small Packet USA, Light Packet and lettermail/letterpost

I could give a link that shows what shipping options are available... within Canada, to the US and elsewhere..... but that was before Canada Post messed up their website

Janet and Paul,

Of course, it's ludicrous that it can cost less to mail something from Toronto to Hawaii than from Toronto to Edmonton. And you're perfectly right to blame the government. Ultimately it's the government that allows Canada Post, a Crown corporation, to operate as they see fit, in other words, to do what they like. Just yesterday it was announced that the US Postal Service would be delaying implementation of rate increases scheduled for April because the regulatory body overseeing the USPS objected to some of the rate hikes. Can you imagine anything like that happening in Canada?

You have to understand that, over the years, Canada Post has cobbled together a rate structure that not only defies logic but conflicts with Universal Postal Union policy. CP's letter mail category is highly restricted: max weight and thickness 500 g and 20 mm; international (incl. USA) letter mail must not contain merchandise (goods).

As you know, domestically in Canada there is no Small Packet service, which is one reason why rates are so high. Small Packets are included in the UPU's first-class or letter mail category. CP used to include them under "Letter Post" but in 2005 they shifted them to "Shipping and Delivery Services", then in 2007 they appeared for the first time under "Parcels". The maximum weight for Small Packets, set by the UPU, is 2 kg but CP arbitrarily limits SPs to USA to 1 kg in weight.

Also in 2007 the Light Packet made its first appearance...under "Parcels"!! The LP is identical in physical dimensions and mode of transmission (air) to Other (or oversize) Letter-post but has different weight steps (which were changed in January) and rates. Some rates are higher, some are lower, for the same weight ranges. It makes no sense.

These are just a few examples of Canada Post's machinations intended to squeeze as much revenue as possible from their hapless customers. Because CP are a government-owned monopoly and, in practice, have no overseer, and - very important - most Canadians don't have a clue as to the situation - they get away with it.

The lower cost is due to the fact that CP will just transport the parcel into the USA and ship using the USPS delivery system.  It's the lower USPS fees that make Canadian shipping to the USA cheaper.

My solution if, you live in Toronto is to use Chitchatsexpress.  It ships using USPS and has a much smaller surcharge for making that delivery  Also, they have cheaper rates for shipping within Canada.
