Shipping card(s) methods on 10-40$ items!?

Hi there. I'm trying to figuring out best shippings method i'm selling collectible trading cards. It seems like in this 10-40$ range of price things seems really a mess

What i mean is that under 10$ i think that lettermail using bubble mailer is the best risk/reward to get sales, the problem is that over that i feel like the risk of lost for non delivery getting too high in $. At the same time i don't see how it would be possible to do any sale using tracking regular parel 12$-20$ making the shipping 20%+ the price of the items. Even registered mail is like 10$.

Over a certain price i think it's possible to use tracking the ratio item price / shipping price can be acceptable 50$+ item / 15$ shipping ( even this ratio seems terrible it's acceptable for 100$+ items to me ). But what is the options for 10-40$ items!? I can't figuring out. I added combined shipping lettermail + 0.50$ / item on my under 10$ listings, and i started to think about if someone buy 20$+ and it's not tracked, the risk/reward getting really bad...

Any suggestion cause i'm actually really lost on how to set up my shipping and the option of combined shipping depending of different price ranges. It's a puzzle that seems to have no solutions cause of terrible canada shipping prices. At his point i'm wondering if it's even viable to sell cards on ebay being non-business seller

I honestly considered free shipping for the exact reasons you outlined, but at the last minute decided against it because I felt it made my items look too expensive, especially the cheaper ones. It certainly makes sense though from refund standpoint! Ugh... always on the fence on this one lol

Lmao i actually decided to remove my listings really quick too, changed my mind... Or at least i need to think a bit more about it

I'm thinking about the unreceived items and refunds including shipping that i put at 30% into BIN price could cost a lot. Also i feel like even if it offers free shipping, at the end no one will click on the listings cause items will looks overpriced. Especially as a new seller having no rep, no visibility. I see top sellers selling same cards than me with generic pictures twice my prices it blows my mind. Like i had a near mint pikachu listed for 7$ + 3$ shipping for a few weeks and i seen sales from top sellers for 15$, i see it every day on many cards. I feel like as small sellers we must underprice to sell, or offer something others don't have. Overpricing i won't sell anything i think

For envelopes i did some tests earlier today. I would put the card in a standard sleeve, a sheet bended in 4 around to avoid the card to move out the sleeve, and then tape that to another sheet blended in 3. It would be like the card in a sleeve in a square sheet in a rectangle sheet. It actually looks decent. Still hesitant about doing it tho cards dont move but yeah it still can be blended... But this risk drops shipping to 1.50$ cost so thats something to think about. I watch US videos they all ship cards into envelopes. If card is damaged i guess you can refund no brainer and cost is low. Could be a good method for like 5$ and less card, good risk/reward and good ratio BIN price/shipping price

@t_bjarnason

You said you ship up to 25$ packages, but what about cards over 25$? Is this the point you start adding tracking to your listings? Or you just don't sell cards at this price

It was the initial subject of this thread actually, still have no idea what to do there. There's a range of price where you don't wanna take the risk to ship without tracking, but at the same time the tracking price is too high to be able to use it and sell. Multi packages works for multi cards orders. But what about one card orders? No one gonna buy a 30$ card with 15$ shipping... At some point like 100$+ items it's reasonable but under the ratio is terrible. For a 30$-60$ card it's 25% to 50% added to the price

"You said you ship up to 25$ packages, but what about cards over 25$? Is this the point you start adding tracking to your listings? Or you just don't sell cards at this price"

For cards that are over $25, I use tracked shipping. I also use tracked shipping for most auction items, even if the starting bid is less than $25.00.

"No one gonna buy a 30$ card with 15$ shipping..."

I completely disagree. I've sold lots of cards where the cost of shipping is double or even triple the cost of the card, especially for auction items or internationally shipped items. For auctions, I will set my starting bid  a bit lower than what the average sell price is on eBay, so when tracked shipping is added, it averages out with the overall average sell price of those items. Of course, this might deter some buyers, but it can attracts others.

I feel like you might be getting stuck in a mental rut where you are trying to figure out a shipping/pricing scheme that works for everyone. Don't waste your time. You will NEVER satisfy everyone. There will always be buyers that think your items/shipping are a rip-off, others will think they are great. Unless you are desperate for money now, patience is key. Stick to what works for you and what you think is fair and what you are comfortable with; buyers will come. Maybe in a week, maybe a few months.

You will probably find that it is cheaper to ship lettermail and refund item not received claims than it is to charge shipping and not refund claims.

Let's say the difference between tracked an untracked is $10 per order.

You list 100 cards, all with a market value of $30 per card:
-You can list them for $28+$2 shipping, you pocket $28 but have to refund INR claims.

-You can list them for $18+$12 shipping, you do not need to refund INR claims, but this costs you $10 of profit per order.

-You cannot list them for $30+$12 shipping, because that would be $42 total. People are unlikely to pay $42 for a $30 card.

All 100 cards sell:

-With lettermail, you make $2800.

-With tracking, you make $1800. That is $1000 less.

-You effectively paid a $1000 insurance fee to protect yourself from INR claims. At $30 a card, you would need to lose more than 33 out of 100 packages for that to make sense.

-Even in a high risk category, you almost certainly won't lose 33 percent of your packages.

-You can run these numbers for all different price points.

A few notes:

-You might choose to pay for tracking on a case by case basis. Does someone have a lot of feedback indicating items haven't arrived? Maybe you cancel the order or bite the bullet and pay for tracking.

-Maybe you pay for tracking on more expensive orders only. It is a lot easier to justify spending $10 for tracking on a $100 order than it is to spend $10 tracking on a $30 order.

It will vary from category to category, but most INR claims come from lack of communication or incorrect shipping times. If you are going to ship lettermail, you should make sure your shipping service is the generic "economy" shipping service that gives you about 18 business days. This is more accurate for a worst case scenario with lettermail. It means a buyer cannot open an INR until 18 business days goes by. Their package will probably be there by then. You also should message buyers when an item ships to let them know that you did in fact hand it off to Canada Post, and to let them know how long it might take for their item to arrive.

You can block buyers who abuse INRs. You can also report them to eBay. eBay does take action against buyers who abuse INRs. They don't always boot them off the site, but I have seen some serial INR buyers have all their negatives left for others removed, and I assume have their money back guarantee privileges revoked.

But you also have to consider there will be lots of genuine INR claims. In which case, if you are polite and provide good customer service, buyers will usually approach you to re-pay for an item if it arrives after an INR case is refunded. So it is important to not assume every INR case is a scammer. While extremely rare, I had a lettermail order within the province between two major cities take 40 or so days. That sort of thing does happen.

Shipping card(s) methods on 10-40$ items!?

Each category is going to have different rates of fraud.

$25 seems like an extremely low threshold to require tracking. If tracked shipping is about $12, that means you have to lose $10 on every card worth $37 or more. That is going to add up quickly. With that said, I don't sell Pokemon cards, and levels of fraud is different in every category.

Free shipping within Canada is usually the best way to go. With lettermail, you have a very consistent shipping price, so it makes it easy to work that into your listings. The only exception I would make, would be if you have a very large inventory of hundreds of cards in the 1 to 5 dollar range, where the shipping cost of $3-$4 might convince a buyer to buy more than one card to lower the overall cost per card. In that scenario, buying more cards creates more value, so they are more likely to do it.

Just starting off though, I would do free shipping, and work the shipping cost into your buy it now price. Even with regular parcel, the shipping prices province to province are close enough that it should be doable.

As far as your previous question about people shopping with bigger sellers. Part of successfully selling on eBay is placement of your listings. Meaning, when I search for a specific card that you happen to be selling, how likely is your card to be one of the first ones that pop up on the search compared to other sellers? Nobody knows exactly what determines this, but a lot of people think having an effective title that has the words people are likely to search, and has them within the first few words of the title. Free shipping and hassle free returns also give a boost. Being a top rated seller (which is reasonably easy, it just takes time). The age of the listing (older listings get pushed down).

I also would suggest that pictures are very important, especially considering how your picture looks very small. People search a lot on cell phones. Even on computers, they are seeing a small picture when they search. Half the battle is to get someone to click your listing over another person's listing. You should crop all your photos so that they are a 1:1 aspect ratio (a square) because that is the default aspect ratio eBay uses, and it meansy our photos will appear as big as possible in the search. I would also suggest making sure your cards are straight and that the photo is cropped closer to the card so that the actual card is as big as possible. Your black background is a great idea, but maybe grab a black poster board/foam board. Your photos overall are great for someone just starting out, I would just change the way you crop them to make them appear better in the search.

Shipping card(s) methods on 10-40$ items!?

Thanks for the tips!

For the photos i really never noticed it wasnt covering the ebay sizing and that they have white empty space around thanks a lot, could have take me months before i notice this. I'm fked tho, i took like 70 photos yersterday for new listings. I guess i'll need to put a 2-3 hours to redo everything. That's true most of them could easily be bigger. For the back black screen it's actually just a replacement part of my computer desk that i have on the side, was the best thing i found i just put it on my table and it's close to a window. I bought a card stand from ebay 5$ i'm waiting to receive it to see how it looks on it too, might use that

For shipping it gave me so much headashes that i decided to keep it simple for now. I charge 3.25$ on everything exept my higher items ( 100$+ with tracking ) and just write in description i offer combined shipping, to message for infos or ask an invoice. Then i'll personalise case by case depending of the value of the order and the buyer. I cross my fingers that it doesnt affraid people to click on my lower price listings when they are 3.50$ + 3.25$ shipping for exemple. I don't have 25-100$ items for now so i got time to think about a better shipping model. 3.00$ and less single card orders i'll ship with envelope with 2.00$ shipping, if card is received damaged it's a small refund and that's it

The only way i see something correct to be honest for now is by overpricing a bit, i realise that a lot of sellers have discounts by having business accounts with post canada or are US and have better prices on their shipping, can't compete with that as a non business seller. For now i'm only listing personal collection stuff too, so if i'm going to sell a 50$ card for 30$ because of shipping and fees, it's just better not selling there. Taking a 40% value loss to feed ebay and post canada pockets is just unnaceptable

I'm looking to buy cards or video games lots for resale, i would like to tryout and do it. But my faith on making profit and on ebay being a profitable platform with their 12.35% + 0.30$ fees and as a canadian non business seller is very very low right now

Sorry for my english if ever, with a long text like that i'm pretty sure there's some messy written parts

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-crop-image-windows-10

You can crop your photos easily to make them into a square. If you have already taken them, this might help you save a lot of work.

Your photos of individual cards are pretty good otherwise. I'm not sure I'd go through the trouble of re-taking 70 photos, but I do think you should consider cropping them to maximize how visible and eye catching they are on the search listing.

In the future, if you are photographing the same thing over and over again, like cards, you can save a lot of time by doing it in an assembly line fashion because they all get photographed the same way.

What I would do, would be get a piece of black foam board from the dollar store. Draw a small border slightly smaller than the size of the card, so that you are putting the card in the exact spot each time you take a photo. You can also get a tripod for your phone for a few dollars, or if you're using a stand alone camera, a cheap tripod for your camera. That way, the camera stays in the same place. Then you have your camera and background in the same spot, you have your stack of cards. One card goes down, front back, next card goes down, etc, etc.

A tripod is anywhere from 5-30 dollars, depending on phone or full camera - a foam board is 2 dollars. So this is all affordable to execute.

If you do things that way, you can photograph let's say 100 cards, in maybe 10-15 minutes. If you are using a camera phone or a digital camera that allows different aspect ratios, you might be able to set it to take square pictures, and you won't have to crop it on the computer.

Shipping card(s) methods on 10-40$ items!?

I agree that "free shipping" within Canada for any lower value, small item being sent via lettermail is the way to go. My CAD buyers love it. CP even tolerates my "chunky" 8x10 bubble mailers, because they can't really tell how thick it is with the "one hand feel" if it's strategically taped in the centre of the envelope...lol.

You card sellers have it made! Literally the best thing you can ship in a regular cardboard envelope with a "p" stamp. I have a handful of very thin, under 30g items I can send with a "p" and I love those transactions!

I have been listing ALL my CAD items "Economy Shipping" with up to a 15 day delivery since Covid. It's actually turned out to be the best thing I've ever done on ebay because it keeps my shipping options wide open. I can ship lettermail, registered, ChitChats, flat rate box, Xpresspost, Regular or Expedited depending on where my buyer lives, if I smell a scam, or if I sell them more than one item. Then they're delighted when their item shows up within days, and unable to complain when it takes up to 2 weeks.

I agree with the strategy to send lettermail separately for buyers that buy multiple items - especially if you smell an INR. It doesn't always make sense, but it's a judgment call.

And one thing I've noticed in shipping with larger bubble envelopes for my tiny items: they are faster and have a lower INR rate. Interesting... could be coincidence, but could be related to them being more visible and harder to lose. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience over the years...?

You don't need to retake your photos - you can use the crop tool on the desktop version of eBay! It even lets you enchance the photos and adjust colour/saturation, etc. This will save you a ton of time and really make your images pop.

Too late for the crop, i actually already started to retake them. Anyway i tested and it was looking better by retaking them. It's fine that's a mistake that won't happen again since now i know it

I received my card stand today i'm very disapointed, it looks like a tiny cheap plastic dollar store item... And i paid 5$ ( again here it's probably shipping that boosted the price ). I randomly seen on amazon they sell similar ones 25x for 20$, got fooled by a resaller at the end. Whatever it does what it needs to do, not sure i'll use it but it can take nice main picture

For free shipping don't you guys takes into consideration that refunded items + unreceived cost a lot? I mean cause when you refund you refund the shipping too. Especially when you used tracking, if it's returned you lose 15$

Whats a P stamp btw? I'm using non-standard oversized lettermail with post canada, it's a P stamp?

P stamp is a stamp with letter P on it for postage value. A P stamp has a current postage value of 92 cents which is the Canada Post Lettermail postage rate for a 30 gram weight letter. About 5 sheets of paper maxium folded in regular sized envelope. P stamps introduced years ago and the P is always the 30 gram weight rate no matter if increases to the rate are made each year.

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/personal/sending/letters-mail/postage-rates.page?

A P stamp bought at the post office costs $1.07 plus sales tax if just one stamp is bought. Buy a booklet and no surcharge and you pay $0.92 each plus tax.

To save on postage costs consider buying Discount Postage stamps from eBay stamps sellers. You buy older mint stamps from stamp collections still valid for postage today. Some sellers makes lots of mint stamps in the combination to make all of the common Canada Post rates like $1.94 for 100 grams within Canada. You will pay 80% of face value usual and sometimes the seller charges no sales tax so even more savings. I mentioned this in a reply to another topi you made.

No point in buying at the post office full price and sales tax. Better deals than 80% can be found also with a little work searching.

PS Be careful. Don't buy no gum stamps because these are used stamps not valid for postage.

I'm not quite sure what you mean?

If you refund an item that was $10 + $5 shipping or an item that was $15 + free shipping, you are still out $15 when you refund the item, plus whatever you actually spent on postage.

When we have to refund in a case that the item was shipped, 10$ + 5$ shipping, we have to refund 15$? I thought the buyer would take the shipping cost since it's HIS order, and we refund the actual item price... So when you offer returns, you actully gotta pay the 1st shipping cost from your pocket if there's a return cause you refund shipping too?

Shipping card(s) methods on 10-40$ items!?

Most people have very low return rates, so this isn't an issue. It is no different in principle than budgeting for any other issues that cost you additional money, but are rare, like being scammed or an item breaking in transit. It is easier to deal with the more items you sell. Look at it this way, if you sell 200 items a year and have something go wrong once every year that costs you 15 dollars, that one thing that went wrong is still only costing you 7 cents per transaction. With most things in eBay, you have to look at costs over a larger sample of transactions or a longer period of time.

eBay has changed the way the search is presented, so free shipping is a bit less of an advantage. I still think it is worth doing, because it is a better way to market your listing and the cost to you is the same as it would be if you charge a flat rate for shipping.

A P stamp is a permanent stamp. The stamp you put on a single letter, which is a .92 cent stamp. Unless you use plain white envelopes, most cards will require an oversized stamp, which is 1.94.
