Regular readers here know I'm a "stamps on the box" kinda guy.
I've always just been a "lick em and stick em" kinda guy.
I figured with the COVID situation, licking the stamps and envelope flaps probably wasn't a great thing to do, so I armed myself with a folded up paper towel (FUPT) and a dinner plate (don't tell my wife) and switched to a water based affixing process.
Actually the folded up paper towel (about 1" wide and 3" long) works great! Years ago I tried placing stamps/blocks etc on full or half damp paper towels but it did not work (I put a lot of souvenir sheets or large blocks of stamps on the box, so placing them on something wet like a paper towel or sponge does not work). Using the FUPT as a remote tongue works awesome).
I'm building my skills enough that I'm now of the mind it is better to continue doing "forever", and if one's ever ACKK ACKK ACKK licked a stamp that was sprinkled with talcum or baby powder 30 or 40 years ago you'll also agree I'm sure!

You need one of these.......
The extra wide versions are not that common.

I do not think these will work for me.
My location (aka basement) is traditionally freezing despite my wee heater. I've noticed in the wintertime the gum (however moistened) has to be hit a couple times and "wiped" for the moisture to actually be absorbed by the gum. This is especially noticeable now that I'm doing the water approach, I can really see the problem, the water actually "beads" on the 70s - 90s era PVA gum on the first hit, I have to hit it a couple times with the FUPT, wiping it the 2nd time to make it actually penetrate/be absorbed by the gum. The old Dextrose (yellow) gum is not a problem, it reacts right away every time. The modern 2010 plus gum is better but takes 2 tries often too.

This also does the trick when you are not feeling lic-tuitive. Available at Staples and other fine stationary stores.

I wonder what's in that "envelope moistener"?
And can it be refilled from the tap?

You can make your own with a smallish bottle and a piece of sponge

FUPT? Had to reread your wetting adventure story several times before clueing in on that one. I catch myself being sorta dense at times lol.
As an alternative how about trying a wallpaper wetting tray ... might be ok for REALLY big sheets. Most households have one stashed away alongside the painting supplies.

Just states Non-Toxic (Built in adhesive) and Adult Supervision required. If necessary just call a friend and you should be okay. 🙂 Also states good for 1500 envelops. Not sure what that would be in stamps.
I paid 3.99 for a bottle. Figured if it didn't work it wasn't a big loss. Use from time to time and had no issues.

Almost any sponge will work, I use one all the time. No shortage of tap water, and the sponge lasts forever,....... ok....., only 15 years.

I had a small plastic bottle with sponge tip from staples.
Staples Pointed Tip Bottle Moistener $2.39
https://www.staples.ca/products/12647-en-staples-bottle-moistener
Worked well for 5 years but sponge tip eventually wore out by age degrading. Had to be careful because too much water on tip could wet stamps too much and wipe off adhesive from stamps. I never replaced it as I no longer sold items on eBay a few years ago so no need to moisten stamps. I could have found a piece of sponge and cut it to fit to fix it but did not bother.
I bought when it was on sale years ago for $1 when Staples had dollar days sale.
PS I licked stamps at first by habit when using discount postage stamps from using single postage stamps on letters all my life. Then someone posted in these forums that you were crazy to lick old stamps from stamp collections that were handled so many people potentially.

I just remembered I saved one of these empty bottles from trash at work to replace my Staples one posted above. I have one here on my work place junk box. Just found it. Lol. Still has a 1/2 inch of fluid in it. But the sponge top has hardened. Probably need to soften it by soaking tip in water.

I've been shipping this weekend (yay!) and have carefull NOT been licking envelopes or stamps.
But I don't trust water on envelopes so I've been adding stickers to keep them closed. Mickey Mouse at the moment, then on to flowers I guess.
