how to respnd to a buyer who complaint because got charge on duty.

A UK buyer got charge on duty for items bought from me 11.50 pound.

How should I respond her?

Polite explain this is part of buying out of country and has always been the buyer responsibility on and off ebay .. Apologize and politely explain .. not much more you can do ... Accepting a return could have you paying duty fees 😉

have had this happen about 4 or 5 times and has always ended smoothly just be honest and polite..

If you receive a neg FB which mentions the customs charges contact ebay and ask to have it removed. Knowing about customs and VAT is the responsibility of the buyer.

Thanks for the replies.

What is VAT?

Is it kind of GST/HST?

VAT = Value Added Tax

European equivalent to our HST but generally much higher (typically 17% to 25% depending on country)

It is 20% in the United Kingdom

Here is a web site with what many countries have for import limits.

Here is the info for the UK.

You can check different countries.

For example, Norway is not part of the EU so it has its own rules.

Re: how to respnd to a buyer who complaint because got charge on duty.

When you set your Returns policy there is a place to insert other information. I put in the boilerplate information eBay gave us a few years ago.

Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.

At that time, eBay was saying that they would refuse claims based on buyer complaints about duty and foreign sales tax if those words were included somewhere on the listing. They may have changed their minds, but the boilerplate is on my template now.
