picture sizes and if it makes any perceivable difference - help for info

I need a favor from fellow board members. I put 4 items for sale as a test using different dpi.

Could people have a look at the 4 pictures and tell me if you notice any difference that is worth mentioning..

The test items tell the dpi for each image uploaded.500, 600, 750, 1200

Thanks to all for your help and replies

Re: picture sizes and if it makes any perceivable difference - help for info

I don't see enough of a difference to warrant the higher resolution.

FWIW, my scanner is old and 1200 dpi scans are really slow.  For what I sell, I get by with 100 dpi and only use 1200 dpi for zooming in on images that will allow it (ie real photo postcards).

I find anything larger than 100 dpi means larger files on my computer, slower uploads to eBay, and slower batch transfers to my other laptop.  All combined that means less productivity for what little is gained.

I see no real difference either. When I have coins or other small items to list, I usually scan at 200 - 600 DPI just to bring out the small details that might otherwise not be seen at 100 DPI. If you are using a Windows computer and save your scans as jpegs, Windows will automatically compress the huge files to something that is manageable and easily uploaded to eBay, without losing any of the detail.

Test listing are to be listed in the eBay category Everything Else -> Test Auctions -> General. You should revise to change the category before you get a listing violation(s).

Scanners are set to use DPI because they are scanning for something that is to be printed usually. Printers are defined in DPI from 300 DPI to 1200 DPI or more for an 8 1/2 x 11 inch page.

When scanning small items, you need higher DPI. Larger item less DPI.

Scanners can be confusing to use because of the DPI.

I find it so much easier to set my scanner software to pixels instead of DPI. I then know how many pixels I am getting for a scan. I can relate this to eBay photo requirements so much easier.

eBay will have a minimum of 500 pixels on the longest side July 1 and a recommended size of 1600 pixels on the longest side.  For small items like coins, 1600 pixels acts like a magnifying glass and enlarges the coin too much. You may want to limit the size of coins to 500 pixels so that you do not show imperfections that are not there. However, this will trigger a warning message from eBay saying that the image is not optimal. This message can be ignored.

thank you for the replies.

Poco, I get that message from Ebay on turbo lister for all 4 of the pics including the one at 1200 dpi which is 1763 x 1741 pixels on my computer. Not sure what Ebay is doing with these warnings bur no way the 1200 dpi should get one.

I will scan pieces between 500 and 750 depending on size of the items.

eBay recommended image warning is for two criteria

1) the image is recommended to be 1600 pixels on the longest side

2) the image quality must be at JPEG quality 90 or above (scale of 100)

If you hover your mouse over the little triangle warning sign on the photos in Turbo Lister, it may show you the reason(s) 1 and/or 2.  I know it does this in the eBay online SYI form.

In the online SYI form, only pictures under 1,000 pixels get a warning even though it says 1,600 pixels. In TL, it warns for anything under 1,600 pixels.

I find that Turbo Lister has issues with images that pass in the SYI form but give errors in TL.

I use the online SYI (Sell Your Item) form to create listings and revise exiting. I just use TL to backup my listings so I have a record of them in case I need a description for some one of a kind items.
