CDN seller on .com - can I apply the CDN tax table on my listings?

I'm taking over a business with an existing eBay account. That account was registered on eBay.com, and about 60% of this business goes to the US. About 35% is in Canada and the rest to Europe.

I was running a business with an eBay account (with 28K listings, yikes) on .com as we were in roughly the same boat in that business. I seem to remember we were able to apply the CDN tax table to purchases made by Canadians then (I own a retail store), but now when I try to list on .com I'm not able to do it.

I spoke with someone from eBay and was told it couldn't be done, but I thought I would ask here first. Will I need to list on .ca in the future to charge the appropriate taxes? If so, is that a huge issue for US buyers?

Thanks in advance, and I'll hang up and listen.

What Canadian taxes would you be charging to US buyers?

Provincial taxes are only charged to buyers in your own province.

GST is only charged to buyers in Canada.

Duty is the responsibility of the buyer/importer?

Or are you referring to Canadian buyers on dotCOM?

Yes, you can set up the tax table on .ca even if you are listing on .com.  On .ca go to preferences / payment from buyers and fill in the tax table.  It seems to me there is one other area that you also have to check off so that it works but I could be mistaken.

I may have found what I was thinking of...On the top of the listing form, click on customize and make sure that you have checked off  the 'charge sales tax' box.  It looks like you can do that for your existing listings, however I don't know if that will work on .com or not since only the US tax table came up when I looked at it.

Yes, they are referring to Canadian buyers.

Thank so much for your help! Is this something that has changed in the past year or two? We did the big migration (what a mess) and I don't remember the tax table being an issue then.

So I don't want to goof this up - if I list on .com, we're not certain whether Canadian buyers will see that they will be charged tax, but if I list on .ca we know it'll work? And in your opinion, does it really make any difference one way or the other?
