I tried twice on two recent purchases to get combined shipping that the sellers do offer. Once I clicked on "but it now' on the items, ebay woudn't group them. I did it a second time on another purchase but went to "add to cart", ebay let me "requset total" before paying. Did ebay do away with "request total" before going to paypal? I have to pay for shipping on each item now.

I think this can happens when it is free shipping.
Seller will combined shipping when it is free shipping when you order items for free shipping at the same time..
Unlike you I wanted seller to ship items separately for free shipping, but seller combined the items for free shipping.
I don't know what happens in paid shipping. They might not combine it for one price shipping if items are heavy and bulky.
I assume it saves you money in shipping when you combined shipping, that is why you wanted it that way ?

I basically just did this for a purchase of four items from the same seller. I committed to 'buy now' the four items from the one seller, then requested the total. This was done because when I had the four items in the cart, and when I tried to request the total from the cart, I got an error that the seller did not combined shipping or gives discounts, even though on the items' pages, the seller advised to request the total before paying. When I tried to follow through with purchase from the cart, it prompted me to sign into PayPal without any option to request the total.
I am getting confused; what is the purpose of the cart, then?
if it helps, I am using eBay.ca, and the seller is American, and not using the global shipping program.
Thanks.

Try using eBay.com, then, and see if things work any better.

Were you using the cart on .com or .ca? I know that glitch is common on .com, it would be interesting to know if people have the same problem here.
