Import fees on purchases gouge Canadians buying from US members

I have just returned to Canada after several years away and was planning to spend many thousands of dollars on ebay purchases for all of the items I need to put my household together. Then I discovered that ebay has begun charging import fees on purchases from the United States, fees that are not only exorbitant, but that appear unjustified and arbitrary. Of the hundreds of items that I have purchased from the US in the past, I have never paid any import duties. Congratulations, ebay has just gone from my 'go to' shopping site to my last resort. From what I have read in the online forums, most of my compatriots feel the same. Ebay owes all of its Canadian members a huge apology.

Speaking of our USPS that almost filed for Bankruptcy, they had to find a way to keep them afloat was to raise their shipping costs and it is ludicrous, but what can you do?

Re: Import fees on purchases gouge Canadians buying from US members

I just found Ebay's Announcement section and it just doesn't surprise me any:

Sellers: Global Shipping Program soon shipping to Germany and Austria!

The list of countries you can sell to through the Global Shipping Program continues to grow! Starting the week of July 15, the Global Shipping Program will also ship to Germany and Austria—bringing the current list to 36 countries served around the world, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, France, and many more.

The Global Shipping Program helps you expand your sales to millions of eager international buyers, and eliminates the hassles! Through the program (which is free to join), you can sell to buyers in dozens of countries—and you only have to ship your packages to a shipping center located in the US. That means you’re only responsible for the domestic leg of shipping.

Once your item arrives at the designated US shipping center, the Global Shipping Program takes care of ALL facets of international processing, including:

  • Completion of customs forms
  • Remitting applicable import charges pre-paid by your buyer
  • Shipping the package to the buyer—with end-to-end international tracking

Your shipping-related Detailed Seller Ratings will be protected, and you are not responsible for loss or damage during international transit. This program is great for buyers, too, as they’ll see the complete and total price of their purchase up-front during checkout—so they won’t be surprised by additional taxes or duties when the item arrives.

Keep your eye on this board for further updates on the Global Shipping Program—and give it a try today!

pjcdn2005, my friend, I do clearly understand what you are saying here and I know that it is a major concern for most of you on this subject. As you mentioned the USPS First Class Mail, please don't get misled on that one. I just recently had a buyer just north of the Finger Lakes right there in Canada that had requested for USPS First Class Mail and I had explained to him that the First Class Mail cannot be used for anything that is one pound or over, just only in ounces. I know that it sucks of how our USPS operates it.

What has been happening is that our USPS had almost filed for Bankruptcy due to not making enough money to keep them afloat. A lot of our U.S. citizens have been using other alternatives by paying their bills instead of using the USPS money orders and etc. Another thing that has been happening is that our U.S. Government wanted to start implementing taxes on how people use the internet and most of our state governments got away in implementing sales tax online, whenever people purchase items from sellers, even on ebay.

Ebay has been fighting with the government over that by trying to protect small businesses that sells on ebay. Ebay even had sought every U.S. sellers to participate in the fight against governments on sales taxes. I guess that is how this got expanded with what most of you are facing now. I have found it very sickening what our federal and state governments are doing and it just does not make our lives any easier!

Powerspcrepair, I don't know where you're getting your information on USPS's shipping requirements for First Class International, but your information is incorrect.  The weight limit for First Class International is a lot higher than it is for domestic First Class.

https://www.usps.com/ship/first-class-international.htm

https://www.usps.com/ship/first-class-package-international-service.htm

I'm also a bit surprised you knew nothing about the import charges levied by the GSP.  There's information on them on this eBay Help Page:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/shipping-globally.html#buyer-charges

With all due respect, did you do your homework before starting to sell internationally?  It's not much harder than selling domestically, but there is a bit of a learning curve in terms of knowing a bit about how your item gets handled in the destination country as well as your shipping options and what they are and aren't capable of accomplishing for you as a seller.

You may want to do some reading on the .com site's International Trading Board and perhaps post to it once it's available for posting again.  Here's the current URL:

"As of a matter of fact, I think I should hold off on enrolling the GSP in my other ebay store to allow any Canadian buyers the opportunity to purchase without the headaches that ebay has caused with their stupid "import fees" and other carp. I do have the opportunity to opt out of the GSP in one of my store. I just hope that this "import fees" and other carp gets resolved ASAP. I thank those who made me aware of this situation that is causing a conflict."

Just to let all of you know that I now have opted out of the GSP and ebay says that it would take "72 hours" for that to take place. Any direct delivery into Canada from U.S. will be back to the norm without the crazy 'fees'. Hope all is fair for y'all. Smiley Wink

I'm curious, how did you opt out? I was under the impression that in order to do that, you had to physically change each listing.

On this id your listings do not show the gsp information anymore however they all show that you ship to the U.S. only. You'll have to set up your international shipping again if you do want to continue sellilng outside of the U.S.

I read in the eBay.com forums that there was a new Opt out button added to opt out of the GSP completely.  I can't find the topic right now.

Hey pjcdn2005,

Sorry that I have not been here. I have been on our .com board assisting other people there. We now have a new board just like this one. To respond to your post, yes, I know that I have to set that back up. I am going to have to set it up the standard way. (The old way.) Which means I have to go to every one of my listings to make them appear outside of the U.S. For Canada will be set up the standard way. For the rest of our allies will also apply the same way. That would be great if you can let me know if my listings are appearing here. Most of the items will appear in the Vintage Computing. Some will be in the usual Electronics category of computers.

By the way, pierrelebel is correct. That was the route I took to opt out of GSP.

Tracking has nothing to do with the gsp.couple of dollars and you have a tracking number,i order from people who ship usps and most have tracking numbers and the shipping itself is not any more than those with shipping costs and added gsp costs

I hope more US vendors opt out of GSP like you did "powerspcrepair "
I just sent a message to a vendor begging him to use USPS for an item I really need now ... A New Stanley Golf Cart & Vehicle Battery Charger 6V to 48V 3 Stage Voltage Detect ...
Serveral on ebay ... between $113-$294 ... all either US only or with GSP ... 😞
I'll have to keep trying until I find a seller who will ship to Canada with USPS ... 😉

Re: Import fees on purchases gouge Canadians buying from US members

If ebay cared about its customers it would have put this package as an opt in, not opt out. It's taking advantage of buyers who are uneducated on the policy & sellers who are unaware until they have already committed to the purchase.

I consider myself a VERY heavy ebay purchaser and i just got ripped off paying $90 dollars on a $200 used item that already had $25 shipping.

This is a ripoff/scam and the only way ebay is going to listen is to hit them where it hurts.

Average yearly ebay purchase for me = 5000-7000. this $200+$90 will be my last ebay purchase.

NICE WORK EBAY!

Re: Import fees on purchases gouge Canadians buying from US members

I am definitely shopping less now. I won't buy something with the absurd import fees. I wuold be paying the same at the local mall and at least there i'll get a receipt and the option to drive over in a few minutes if I change my mind. In a way I am saving money as I have less incentive to shop on ebay with these ridiculous new import charges.

Re: Import fees on purchases gouge Canadians buying from US members

I also agree the global shipping program is stupid.

Most of the sellers don't even know their signed up for this global shipping program.

When they make a listing, it is automatically checked off.   I have chosen not to bid on alot of things that I usually would bid on because this global shipping charges ridiculous prices for shipping and import fees.

eBay, you are loosing out on alot of sales because of this!

They are basically ripping off the sellers because they don't see it on their end, and when the buyer pays, they don't see the money that goes to pitney bowes.    Most people would bid higher on the items if there wasn't these crazy fees!
