"For sellers without an eBay Stores subscription, it’s still free to list.
Sellers without a subscription will receive 20 free listings* per month, which can be used to create auction-style or fixed price listings.
For listings in the Collectibles categories, sellers will receive an additional 20 free auction-style listings* per month.
Sellers will be credited for the insertion fee on auction-style listings when that item sells†.
Media category items listed in the fixed price format will now have the same insertion fee as other category listings."

Am I reading this right. If I list in collectables, I will have 40 free listings. So I'm losing the amount of free listings?

Official ebay 2015 Spring seller update

A lot of questions will be raised about this spring update and, hopefully, they will all be clarified before the effective date.

A huge increase for media sellers (affects me on another of my selling accounts).

Product identifiers:  Will be mandatory later this year.  No doubt this will trouble a lot of sellers.  The brand and UPC is readily available on new items, but the MPN?  As well, sample or travel size items (health and beauty) do not have UPC numbers.

I'll be interested in reading all the comments.

Thanks so much for posting this, 'poco'.

For once in the past 4 years, this really is just an update, not a seismic shift.  I feel like I've just been handed a reprieve for another year, or one of those "Get out of Jail for Free" cards in Monopoly.  I was dreading this year's Spring Update, but there may be some hope.

What I read into these changes is that:

1)  Despite their headline that "We're putting the excitement back into auctions", I think EBay means not all auctions.  They obviously want to limit auctions to high-demand items by penalizing sellers who list "stuff" of all kinds that doesn't sell.  As we all know, we've had far too much nickle-and-dime junk listed at auction that clogs up the site, never sells, and crowds out the more saleable or interesting items.

Maybe eBay has realized that having 10 million auction listings of the same old Chinese mass-produced stuff is putting buyers off generally.  Gee, I think we minions could have told them that 4 years ago.

2)  EBay is slowing maneuvering sellers into the store subscription corner.  Just looking at the listing fees for non-stores gives me a headache -- it seems so complicated now to list without a store that I imagine this Update will encourage many sellers to join the bandwagon.

I've believed for quite some time that eBay might eventually want to have the assured income flow of subscribed store sellers rather than the unpredictable hit-and-miss income from non-subscribers.  I wouldn't be surprised to find the pay-as-you-go fee structure phased out almost entirely within a couple of years.

I never thought I'd say this, but there's some good news in this Update for me personally, in the sense that it's essentially no news.  For once, they haven't seriously altered anything that I'll have to spend weeks or months adjusting to.  It's the "no update" Update I've always been wishing for!  Whoo-hoo, I'm pretty much scot-free until the fall. Woman Very Happy

I always dread to see another Update each time, too often not positive and too much changes.  Why is that it has to be pages, pages, pages, pages, pages??

Why not just 2 pages and be done with it?  It has toooooooo much information that is going on and on and on.

I was told by some of the sellers that said that they DON'T HAVE TIME to read as they are busy "working" on eBay and that they don't need additional undue stress like updates.

Yes, I agree, these will probably be onerous for some sellers.  It will be like the HS codes though, I think.  Once sellers get used to the idea and build up a system to deal with it, it may become just another daily annoyance.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the tsunami of fake goods being hocked on eBay?  Perhaps this is eBay putting its foot down and demanding that sellers enter a proper code.  That's all well and good, as long as there's some way to verify that the UPC is accurate.

I don't sell new, commercially manufactured goods, so I was able to just skip by that section with, I admit, a certain amount of glee.  This is a decision that for once, doesn't impact those of us who sell vintage or collectible (i.e. not new) items.

Sorry, I realize this change will probably affect a majority of sellers, but I can't help smiling for my own sake right now.  The last 3 years have been quite a struggle, so it's an indescribable relief to just be able to carry on more or less as usual.

I totally agree with you "rose".  Although I will be affected by some of the changes, on the whole, it was not the drastic Spring Update I was anticipating.  I thought there might be changes to the return policy, the defect system, DSR's, etc., with their attendant head-aches .... but no.  I actually breathed a sigh of relief when I finished reading.  I can live with this Smiley Happy

"We don’t expect the overall fees to change significantly for most sellers. Some sellers may see an increase in fees, which can be reduced by adjusting their listing format, listing duration and improving the quality of their listings.

Most sellers will see their fees stay the same or decrease."

Do you think the close-minded will comprehend that? I can think of at three, here, that will scream that their fees went up again, when they do not go up.

I'm not close minded....my fees WILL be going up (that is if I get convinced to actually pay for listings). I'm lucky since I'm a professional "hobby" seller, I have flexibility that most true full time sellers don't have. As long as the listing promos continue at the same pace it will be "no change" for me.

The inability to use Store Listings as Auctions is a real annoyance for me personally but it's not an overwhelming problem. The increase in Media listing fees for Fixed Price IS a real problem for low priced items which are very common in media.

I advise everyone to check out the Category & IS changes, if you are affected and have a large number of listings it can be a lot of work to get them right.

At first  I saw an major increase in fees....

Then I  realized that I can go with an Anchor store  for fixed items...  Books

Now I am faced with an extra $30 per month...

Also... and this was unexpected

100 free auction listings... where I can list ..... Pottery and art glass ....from the years before I went to books only.... This makes things look good....

The ISBN situation is no problem for books......ISBN are not available for really old books....

What I do not want to see is a mandatory use of eBay's catalogue for books... which I view  as a mess looking for a place to happen....

ISBN is required if the book is listed in a new condition.

This gives recognition to the fact that books published before a specific year do not have an ISBN

Applies to other items listed as new....

From the update... a quote....

Be sure to add your item’s brand, manufacturer part number (MPN), and global trade item number (GTIN)—along with item specifics such as size and color—any time you list on eBay. It’s especially important to include product identifiers for branded items in new condition in the following categories.

The important words... Branded items in a new condition...

Books included

I have no problem putting an ISBN as a part of the item Specifics for a book.....

This is a significant increase for piles of sellers without stores and/or media categories.  How much so depends on the extent they keep listing promos.  Being the changes won't have much effect if they do them as frequently as they have been, I'd imagine changes will happen there.

They added the line about most sellers not having an increase every single time they've made changes, yet somehow manage to keep increasing their take rate everytime

For me a change to an Anchor Store... gives me an increased cost  of $30 per month...

$130 extra for the Anchor store... but $100 less for  2000 free listings...

There will be 2500 free listings with an Anchor store, compared to 500 free listings with a Premier store

....  and a listing fee of 5 cents per 30 days... the listing fee will be no change..

and there will be no change for FVF... for books listed in a store.... It will stay at 9 %

However, I now  have an option to list pottery and art glass ... collectables...  at auction... for free...  and for 10 days...Good inventory from years ago

There are a lot of things to consider....  and changes to be made ...  for all sellers...

Now is the time to look at everything very... very... carefully...

The last few promos have tried restricting what is being listed in the promos with terms that require "New" listings, no Relisitngs, No Sell Similar. So far the eBay technology to track the origin of a listing is limited to Relists and can block these. Sell Similar defeats the Relist restriction and makes a "New" listing for now.

If eBay somehow makes the technology to control what is new, then listing promos will not be able to be used to list existing UnSold listings repeatedly with each promo.

How to do this I do not know. It could easily be implemented on eBay when eBay tools are used. (like relist). Bulk edit using Sell Similar can track the source listing. eBay Turbo Lister could track listing source.

Third party tools like SixBit, Auctiva, inkFrog and so on are not under eBay control so they could make any old listing look "New" for a promo. Of course if eBay tracks pictures or description being the same, it might consider it not to be new.

eBay already has the technology in place controlling duplicates for Fixed Price (duplicates not allowed) and Auctions (allowed but not visible in search for the dups until the first one sells or ends). It might be used to judge if an item is new or not. Just speculation on my part. Trying figure out what the promo no relist, no Sell Similar is going.

For me this seller update is a killer.  I sell CD's and have been paying .05 to list.  Many CD's take a few months to sell.  Mostly someone is looking for a specific CD every so often.  Right now to list 750 CD's per month, I get 50 free and pay $35 in listing fees for 700 CD's.  Effective May 1/15, for 750 to list those 730 CD's (only 20 free) I would have to pay $219 in listing fees per month.  Well that is not going to happen.

I guess, I will be going out of business soon.

For those of you that have a store, could you tell me what would it cost me to list 750 CD's?  Is it worth it to have a store?
