At the risk of coming across as argumentative, ebay makes as much money without listing Promotions as they do with. If you sell something, ebay gets their Final Value Fee on the item plus shipping (if applicable) regardless of whether you paid to list that item or not. If you did pay to list it (whether one listing at a time or as part of a store subscription) instead of using a freebie, they also get that money. What does it amount to, is it 30 cents? 

 

The more practical way to look at it is the only way for you to pay money is to sell something, and you can only sell it if you list it. 

 

Sellers cannot count on ebay's promos to run a business here. Those promotions are doled out with the corporation's best interests in mind, not the individual seller's short-term plans in mind.

 

You have about 50 items listed on ebay.ca so why don't you try the other 50 on ebay.com? We get an equal number of member freebies on both sites.

Many of the things you have listed are ideal for listing on eBay.com to take advantage of free monthly listings. Non-store sellers get 50 free on .ca and 50 free on .com every month.

 

On eBay.com you have to use flat rate shipping rather than calculated (which is eBay.ca's strong point) because Canada Post is not shown as a shipping service. You can use Canada Post, but you can't display it as part of the shipping -- you have to use a generic choice.

Here's a list of current shipping choices when listing on eBay.com for the Canadian seller (who ships from Canada)

To the USA
All flat rate, no calculated, with expected delivery time.

Economy Shipping from outside US (11 to 23 business days)
Standard Shipping from outside US (6 to 10 business days)
Expedited Shipping from outside US (1 to 4 business days)


Outside the USA, to the rest of the world (including Canada)
All flat rate, no calculated, countries are selectable.

Economy Int'l Shipping
Standard Int'l Shipping
Expedited Int'l Shipping

You can have up to 5 separate International rates for countries you
select plus can have "Require buyers to contact you for international
shipping costs" as a choice. This last International option allows the
potential buyer to ask for a cost and you can calculate a shipping cost to their country.

Well, I suppose I'm going to argue the opposite proposition...  

 

Actually I'd say eBay makes more money by offering listing promotions because sellers are tempted to use them!  

 

I've seen a lot of serious sellers over the years who do rely, if not entirely, at least to a large extent, on regular promos to run their businesses.  EBay has offered these promos fairly consistently, and for a very long time, and I doubt they're ever going to stop, because it boosts eBay's income, too.  

 

For a lot of store owners, the promos are a regular part of their business plan, permitting them to list goods they otherwise might not.  Many have a bucketful of listings specifically ready to go when a promo is offered. I have to admit that almost every time I've taken advantage of a promo I've seen a jump in sales. Those sales mean more FVFs for eBay.  Imagine the effect of these promos on eBay's cash flow across an entire site. 

 

As I've said on another thread, it costs eBay virtually nothing to hand out free promos as long as they have the site capacity to absorb the extra listings.  The more sellers list, the more we sell, and the more fees eBay makes from those sales.  In that sense, promos are in eBay's best interests, but on the other hand, what seller is going to complain about more sales? 

 

Admittedly the promo details per se are tailored to eBay's current cash flow strategies, not to sellers' needs specifically.  So perhaps if eBay sees that sales of GTC fixed price items are top-heavy, they may offer an auction-only promo.  This is one area where relying strictly on promos may be a little problematic if a seller is fussy about the listing type or duration.

I don't agree with that.  I get 500/1000 on ca and 500/1000 on com for free and I have posted over 6,000 items due to 50k free listings (free promos) on both ca and com.  If not for free promos those items I listed would not be sold, they would be sitting in the inventory!

 

Free promos do help which I got so many items sold the last 3-4 months (2 to 12 daily!) more than normal, so please keep giving us free promos.  In fact, I would not be willing to pay the insertion fees, not worth it.  eBay, so pretty please send us the free promos.  I just got the 50k free promo for ca but not for com so I need the 50k free for com so I can list more new items and also to relist the unsold items.  Thanks.

Not to belabour the point, but you can't sell items if you don't list them.

Congratulations on achieving sales rates of two to 12 items daily.

If it were me, I'd re-invest the proceeds into paying insertion fees so that I could continue to sell at that rate.

I wouldn't expect eBay to make regular practise of giving away 50,000 free listings at a time. That's 50 months of store subscriber allotment for a Premium store owner. And to routinely give that away devalues the point of owning a store, eBay won't be unaware of that.

They give away big chunks of listings as free promos to boost listing counts. Accelerate selling. Collect more FVFs. And lure sellers into purchasing store subscriptions to continue the momentum, that's the whole point.

I don't get any at all anymore and I use to get them frequently - I think since July since I switched to .com 😞

 

The promotions always seems to be for sellers who list on .ca.  Would be nice to include sellers who list on .com.

Yes, I've noticed the dearth of .com promos as well since I switched to listing almost exclusively on .com.  I have a whole list of promos for .ca sitting in my "Promotions" box that I have no use for.  

 

Maybe eBay is now seeing what a bad move it was to force Canadian sellers to list exclusively in $CDN and are hoping all the .ca promos will lure us back.  Not me -- over 95% of my buyers are American and all my competitors are in the U.S.  Listing in $USD just makes good business sense for me.
