Sales WAY lower than expected. No idea why!

I have over 500 items listed and sales have been much lower than expected for the past 3 months, averaging about 3 items a day. Can someone please help me understand why or what I could do to improve sales. Could it be prices, description, inventory, or something I might now even know about? Any help would make my day!

You're probably not alone, if that's any consolation at all.

I think, judging from comments on these boards, many smaller sellers are probably experiencing a different sort of pattern of sales than used to be the case even 2 years ago.  There seem to be more sudden bulges, longer complete dry spells, and no predictability to buying levels.  At least that's been my experience since pretty much the beginning of 2013.

As has been said a lot on these boards: try to follow eBay's best practices, top-notch pictures and lots of them, good, clear descriptions and keep on top of eBay selling policies.

I've got TRS, good visibility in searches, 100% FB, and used to have a steady, reliable level of sales.  However I'm currently experiencing a 3-week total dead zone, and this isn't the first one.  This is after a sudden, inexplicable "burst" of activity in late October.  I'm apparently doing everything right, at least according to eBay's standards, but things have changed.  I'm starting to get accustomed to these "dead zones".

I "think" that eBay is rapidly moving away from the garage sale aspect to the full retail model. I "believe" this is customer driven.  The days of just being here and selling are long gone. You have to make yourself found. Just a few years ago, 13 million listings was a lot. What did Pierre say a few weeks ago? There are 500 million listings?

"much lower than expected"

The problem may not be with the marketplace but with your expectations.and underestimating of your own results.

"for the past 3 months, averaging about 3 items a day."

With less than 500 listings, and based on an overall eBay average of one sale every 14 weeks for fixed price listings, you are doing pretty good in a very competitive area.

In my opinion, after looking at a few of your listings, you could improve your sales by making two adjustments:

1) lower your shipping charge in many of your higher priced items.  Your American competitors are charging less than you do (your actual costs are irrelevant to buyers.  Not their problem). You may want to increase some prices to make up for lower shipping charge.

2) Change your policy to offer a full refund upon return within 14 or  (preferably) 30 days.  That "no return accepted" is a turn off for many potential buyers.  If you do not trust the quality of your products, why should they?

Good Luck

hi is not the only one, my sales have dropped like a rock. the single largest contributor are all those long promotions ebay are giving away.

Free shipping, low prices, full refund and 14 days; it don't make any difference, my listings are lost in the current 86,000+

When the total drops below 70,000 in the category i sell, sales pick up again.

WAY TO MANY LISTINGS OUT THERE.

I don't know how many listings(far to many) i see of people just taking a coin out of there pocket and list it, just flooding the category to the point it makes it very difficult for buyers to find what they want. boy i have the experience and i have a hard time to search, "imagine the bulk of the average buyers"

ebay is actually worst than a garage sale

My sales this year compared to 2 previous years about are down about 40% ..

My listing skill has improved big time ..

2 Things I think make the difference one of which is just a guess ..

Main Factor my market has about 8-10 times the amount of listing  from when I started my store..

Alot of ebay changes to the market which I do not think this is really a factor but might as well speculate a little ..

I blame my sales on my competition getting to be waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy more then it used too

my studies very clearly shows a dramatic decrease in sale when the promotions are on.

i can see the day that this site will no longer be worth the effort for merchant.

why pay to be on this site and have little to no return while you can list on other sites for free(or close to it) and have the same results.

this is something i predict ebay will have to seriously look at in the next year.

I agree that Free Listing promotions are not good for sellers, particularly for the small but professional sellers.

The site is flooded by unsaleable carp offered by delusional occasional sellers and cheap stuff from overseas mega-sellers.

Grump grump grump.

On the other hand, my own sales have picked up now that summer is over.

And you were selling a really cool ray gun! So I bought it. Got any Firefly memorabilia?

There are just too many listings, too many choices.

Free Promotions definitely hurt us all.

Still on track for the year, but am already planning for the New Year. Business models will definitely have to be adjusted.

Savy buying practises & unique items are the way to go for small sellers.

I have bought a quarter of what I bought the year previous yet great deals are still out there. Why, sellers are in panic mode & can no longer afford to sit on excess inventory.

Unfortunately I don't feel I can sell the mainstream product I could sell in previous years.

Alternate venues must be examined.

It seems to be happening everywhere.

Three of five friendly competitors have had zero sales today.

I can't recall that ever happening to them.

One competitor has now started listing items in the auction format. The five plus years I have known him he has never listed auctions previously.

Sign of the times.

Thank you all for the info. There has to be something going on with our search results and a few other things. It just seems very unlikely to have this much good inventory and not being able to move it. I will take your suggestions into consideration!

A lot of that hits it right on ………….

EBay is moving away from collectible One of a kind items to mass produced items.

Collectibles still do fine but IMO (only) the high end items are the way to go because these things can be found in a search and they always get a lot of hits.

Run of the mill stuff………. not so much.

However,  while high end items still sell on eBay the prices are lower than elsewhere and the fees are higher.

Most sellers of high end items have left eBay and the buyers have followed.

Ebay is still a good plane to buy when the GSP (such a nuisance)  doesn't get in the way.

The other sites are taking off and the next year or two should bring a lot of fast changes for sellers and buyers of OOAK items.

Ebay is for mass produced stuff which will be in the dump within the year.

Yes, I agree.  I've noticed a couple of my long-time competitors each have a dozen or so attractive items up for auction this week, with nary a bid so far.  I know these items were selling like hotcakes 2 or 3 years ago, and these sellers were turning over their listings every few days.  Now their auctions are getting relisted and relisted and relisted...

There are some insightful comments on this string.  I too would say the high-end OOAK items in my categories are still selling, but clearly at a lower price than previously.  In the categories I sell, swamping with cheap goods isn't as big a problem as in other categories, thank goodness, so I can't blame a surplus of competition on the slower sales -- it seems the pool of interested and willing buyers has dried up - a lot!

I think those of us who have hung on so far may be in for an even rougher ride come 2014, especially if eBay brings in more massive seller updates (I won't think about that now Smiley Sad).

Oh yeah, and I had to smile today -- I noticed that a big competitor of mine who always had regular, strong sales and a line-up of buyers, and who never, ever, had to mark down her listings is now offering 25% off.

That's a first, and another sign of the times.  There's some consolation in knowing even bigger, established sellers in my areas are struggling.  All in the same boat...
