September 16th 2015 Weekly Session

Hello everyone,

Welcome to our weekly session. I'll keep this thread open for most of the day and be around on & off to reply.

If you have questions or comments on last week's Fall Seller Update announcement, please go to to this thread instead so that any members wanting to read about that topic can get all of the conversation.

Here are the issues I am currently tracking:

  • Full shipping FVF charged on combined orders with discounted shipping (dutchman48)
  • SYI form stripping the weight off when switching back to USD on an item that was originally in USD and set up with calculated shipping (block36)
  • SYI preventing relist and Sell Similar if the original listing had a non compliant photo (pierrelebel)
  • Notifications reappearing in the header (pocomocomputing)
  • UPC codes suddenly not recognized on live listings (mjwl2006)

And the issues for which I have had news:

  • Listings allowed to go live without a photo (rose-dee) - This is a known bug that is being worked on by the relevant team.

"SYI preventing relist and Sell Similar if the original listing had a non compliant photo (pierrelebel)"

Actually it is a bit more complicated than that!

Sometimes, eBay will not allow a "relist" or "sell similar" due to an alleged deficiency with the image.  That should be easy to fix.

However, the problem I have experienced for about a year is eBay refusing to relist some unsold items when using the bulk relist tool - claiming a deficiency with the image - yet allowing the very same listing to be relisted individually with the same image!

For whatever reason, it appears your bulk relist (or sell similar) function has different (stronger) standards than when listing or relisting individual listings.

For example 371441179959 this morning.

Hi Pierre,

This is all the same issue actually. It's got to do with the image check service that both listing tools consume. When that gets fixed, the problems on SYI and BEAR will be fixed as well.

For those who may not know,

SYI = eBay Sell Your Item form listing editor (most know this)

BEAR = Bulk Edit and Relist in My eBay or Selling Manager bulk edit/relist tool

BEAR surprised me years ago in my Site Preferences Third Party Authorizations with the title BEAR when the tool came out. I thought I had an account issue with some third party tool I did not authorize. I complained way back then to eBay (and most likely others did) that the name was suspicious sounding (it had no eBay in the title). It was eventually changed to "eBay Bulk Listing Management" used today which made more sense.

I have to assume BEAR is still used within eBay but not really outside of eBay in these forums. It may be confusing to some forums members to see BEAR used.

Thanks Pocomo. Not easy to keep such things in mind when tackling 236721848 topics at the same time (I may be exaggerating a bit). I must admit I have been using the term BEAR (Bulk Edit And Relist) without really worrying that someone might not know what it is.

To be fair, that was a somewhat safe assumption given that you and Pierre in particular are more savvy then we are on some topics!

Why or how is it possible for a buyer to pay for a cancelled order?

Why does it take 10 days for a cancellation to go through when no payment has been made and the seller gets a message that buyer has to confirm refund?

Why when we are waiting for the 10 days, and a seller then pays, does Ebay not remove the cancellation or not even allow payment to be made?

Why even after shipping the item, does Ebay allow the cancellation after the 10 days has expired?

This whole procedure for cancellations is severely flawed, maked Sellers look bad, makes Ebay look bad, and more importantly does nothing to keep the buyer happy.

What is going to happen next year with cancellations if the buyer requests cancellation either before or after paying?

Hi dutchman,

@dutchman48 wrote:

Sellers are only supposed to cancel transactions at the request of a buyer. If you cancel a transaction that your buyer would still like to complete, you receive a transaction defect. A transaction cancellation is only complete once the buyer has been refunded (if they already paid) and confirmed the cancellation on their end.

@dutchman48 wrote:

  • If your buyer paid with PayPal, you don't have to wait at all. The cancellation is processed immediately.
  • If your buyer paid with another payment method, there's a period of 10 business days for you to send a refund and for the buyer to confirm that they've received that refund. As soon as these both happen, the cancellation will be completed. However, the transaction won't be cancelled if both actions aren't completed within the 10 business days.

If a buyer pays in the midst of a cancellation, it probably means that they don't agree to cancel and that the seller should either complete the transaction or refund the buyer and get a defect.

Not sure I understand that one. If you were cancelling the transaction, why would you ship the item? If the buyer pays after you tried to cancel and then you decided to ship the item, the cancellation is moot because the transaction is complete.

Nothing will change in that regard next year.

I've waited as long as I could, but have finally decided to abandon listing on .ca because of the .com "cart disconnect" (because over 90% of my buyers have traditionally been from the U.S.).

I've begun moving listings over (what a tedious process!), but my question is this:  what happens if in the meantime a buyer purchases say, 3 items listed on .com (using their cart), and then decides to add a 4th or 5th which are listed on .ca.  Will the 4th and 5th items make the cart dysfunctional (as was the case with a purchase of all .ca items, i.e. conflicting messages saying the item has been added to the cart, and there is nothing in the cart)?  Do you know exactly what the .com buyer will see on their end if they try to do this, or what they'll have to do to complete the desired purchase?

If the answer is not good (which I expect it won't be), then I'll have to get all my listings switched over as quickly as possible.

One other question:  Is a Canadian seller, listing on .com, subject to the "Hassle Free Return" programme?  If so, what happens if return labels are required for a U.S. purchase?  I'm rather concerned about this aspect.

lol good catch Maureen.  Perhaps like me, Raphael wants it to be spring outside rather than fall. I'm much more excited about the coming weather in the spring than in the fall!

Raphael, I haven't thought of any questions for this session but did ask about a couple of things on the fall update board.

Except my link above doesn't seem to be working! An 'An invalid set of parameters has been specified in the url.'

Does this one http://community.ebay.ca/t5/Seller-Updates/2015-Fall-Seller-Update/m-p/312578#M718

Regarding the Bulk Editor not recognizing exiting UPCs, it is a problem that is specific to ebay.ca. I get no such error message when I log into ebay.com.

Also, something needs to be fixed with the ebay.ca Shopping Cart. When the shipping is set to Flat Rate and results in Free Postage, it overrides a buyer's choice to opt for Cash on Pickup. This caused me serious problems last week. My buyer was local; we had made prior arrangements for Cash On Pickup but he wasn't able to make that work in the cart, despite my assurances that he could and should. The buyer gets the message instead that shipping is free and they can't request a total.

Here is another bug: I am currently communicating with buyer from ebay.co.uk and he is not able to understand his invoice and/or the CAD to £ currency conversion. He has sent me messages with photo attachments via ebay.co.uk Messages that have NO attachments when viewed on ebay.ca Messages. How is this possible? I now stand on the brink of losing a $97 CAD sale due to this.

Hi rose-dee,

I just gave it a try and CA items do what CA items have been doing in this scenario. But for what it's worth, I don't think you'll see this happen that much since the "add to cart" link on non cartable items is not very prominent compared to the large button that the buyer has been clicking on earlier in the same session. That's just my opinion.

Regardless, within reason I think it's a good idea to move your items over quickly as for your business it seems, more items on eBay.com means less headaches for you.

Hassle Free Returns is only available for domestic US sales on eBay.com. Meaning both the seller and the buyer need to be physically located in the US and the transaction needs to happen on eBay.com.

Hi Maureen,

I haven't quite wrapped my head around this issue yet to be honest. Can you give me the item number for the item being flagged on eBay.ca?
