Why is GSP charging import fees when I did not have to pay for them previously when buying an item in the States?

I live in Canada and have purchased numerous items from US Ebay sellers since I have been a EBay member. Since GSP came into effect I noticed that if a seller is using this service there will be a import charge created by GSP. Previously when buying from the US I seldom except for rare cases (depending on large amount in final purchase cost and maybe type of item ) have had to pay extra "import fees" and/or custom duty. With GSP there is an extra charge attached to everything regardless. Plus it seems shipping charges seem to be higher with GSP users even considering the large shipping increase in January. I am not seeing the advantage for Canadian buyers (unless a high ticketed item) to buy from US sellers that use GSP. The January shipping increase has seriously affected the amount I or family or friends purchase on Ebay from US sellers. GSP has put a another nail in the coffin.

Many US sellers aren't happy about this, either. Belatedly, they're finding out the stiff costs to their buyers.
Unfortunately, eBay hasn't provided us with a master OPT-OUT feature in Site Preferences. If a seller doesn't remember to UN-check the GSP box when creating individual listings, it's automatically added 😞
Prior to bidding/BIN, ask the seller if he's willing to ship to you directly, thus by-passing eBay's Processing Center and the import fees.
