Please join us on Thursday, August 25, from 1-2 PM ET for a workshop with Canada Post. Kim from Canada Post will be here to answer all of your questions about Canada Post letterpost service and what the regulations are for using this type of service.

If you are not able to attend, you can leave your questions here in advance of the workshop and they will be answered during the workshop, and you can come back in and check the answers.

Hope you can join us!

Hello Kim
Thanks for coming.
1. My service with two post offices here in Cape Breton is very good. Baddeck and Whycomomagh staff are excellant in answering questions and helping us with our small business. Clone these folks into other outlets as I see there are many not so good experiences.
2. We sell paper products and you have answered our questions...we will print out and provide to the two post offices here.
3. Can CP work with the Canadian business community including ebay Canada to find an acceptable solution to the small packet rates. What are the barriers that is preventing its implimentation and is there ways to over come this for the economic benifit of all.
Thanks
Andrew

I also want to know how Canada Post knows what's inside an envelope without asking. Is all lettermail xrayed and returned to sender if it doesn't meet the "charactertics of paper" requirement?

Envelopes containing written correspondence or documents only, do not require any customs documentation

Envelopes containing a paper item of value up to $500 require a CN22 (green customs sticker)

Envelopes containing a paper item valued over $500 require a CN22 (green customs sticker) plus a CP72 (customs declaration dispatch note)

You state above "paper item" but where in the guide does it say this?

make that "no-conforming" (i.e., containing a CD, for example)

"any plastic" versus "hard plastic" would be a very
important distinction to me. I often send a valuable sports card to the U.S. in a semi rigid plastic holder to protect it.

Q. How does Canada Post determine what's in the envelope?

A. We rely on the counter staff to determine if the item qualifies as letterpost -- obviously if the envelope is rigid or if it's obviously a good - then it would not qaulify. The other way is if it does get into the processing stream, it may not fit in the machinery that is used to process lettepost and may be returned.

Does this mean we are ok as long as we comply with the standards for machine sortable mail?

And further, if this is true is different equipment used to machine sort USA/Int. letterpost over domestic lettermail?

You just said I could send photos protected with rigid cardboard????

Which is it?

I often put a magazine or knitting booklet between two sheets of cardboard. The result is a rigid package. If that is the standard you are going to apply, then some packages that qualify will be rejected.

I sell stickers...regular vinyl (soft plastic) would be OK? Fiol Stickers would be no good? I got charged $6.95 to mail a dollars worth of stickers to Australia (homeland security as well?) Obviously won't be doing that again until CP gets it together.

If I put a small button in bubble envelope - will it be accepted as other letter post?

Insurance is an option on many of our services. It is a value added option, and is linked to the way the service is performed. It would typically apply to services that accommodate shipment of "goods". We don't offer it on our basic letter services.

Another question that ties into rates and prices is "How can we get better discounts through VentureOne"

A. Canada Post does offer commercial discounts based on shipping volume. The VentureOne discount of 5% is based on shipping volumes up to 750 parcels a year. If you ship more than 751 parcels a year and would like to obtain better rates, we would be glad to have our Business Sales Centre contact you to find the best solution to meet your needs.
