Don't panic.

You bought something from the USA or the UK recently and your seller used the Global Shipping Program to protect her shipment.

The GSP is run by Pitney Bowes.

You can see which listings are being sold with this program by looking for the words:

Customs services and international tracking provided

in pale grey on the listing.

This is difficult to see if you shop on a mobile device or if you Search with Gallery View.

The amount charged by Pitney Bowes is applicable Canadian duty on items valued over $20CDN (~$15CDN) and the Canadian sales taxes plus a ~$5 service charge from PB for wrangling your item through customs.

And before you say you've never been charged for this before, yes, we know.

Although the late Conservative government raised the import amount to $200 for drive in crossborder shoppers, they left it at the $20 it had been since 1985 for mail imports.

The CBSA and Canada Post made the informal but sensible decision that it was dumb to assess and collect these fees (mostly sales taxes btw) when the cost of collecting them was higher than the amount collected.

But couriers like UPS and PB are required to collect them. It's the law.

The Global Shipping Program is NOT designed to help buyers in anyway. It is a SELLER  protection program.

And there are many many other problems with it.
