what kind of 'feedback' should l leave a seller who wouldn't leave 'feedback' for me as a buyer ... until they saw what l said about them.

Not being a big buyer l need help when it comes to 'feedback'. My question is about me giving 'feedback' to a seller. This seller won't leave 'feedback' for me until after l have posted 'feedback' for them. The 'seller' got their payment right after l won the bidding and it was done through Paypal. I'm not all that happy with the fact that 'I' have to leave 'feedback' first. I even spoke with Ebay and they too were at a loss for words about this seller's way of dealing on Ebay. What should l do about leaving 'feedback' to the seller?

Feedback is voluntary. Only about 70% of transactions end with any feedback at all.

Sellers are slightly better than buyers at leaving feedback, since leaving it is an encouragement for the buyer to leave it.

But if you don't leave any and he doesn't leave any, there is no problem.

You bought , you paid, he shipped, you like the item. End of.

It's like those cards you see in chain restaurants You don't have to do anything with them either.

As femmefan said , its voluntary and wrong to penalize a seller for not leaving.

You are not indicating problems with the purchase so leave the seller a positive and  hopefully he will reciprocate. If not ,well , you did the right thing.

There are still a few sellers who are unaware that they can only leave positive. May be thinking if you leave negative , can respond in kind. Unfortunate.

Hello 'iris',

I would agree that the feedback system is important on ebay, but the truth is that no one 'owes' anyone feedback.  Most folks do it, though, give and receive.  But the timing differs considerably.

Did you check the sellers 'outgoing' feedback?  Some leave it right after you pay.  Some do it on an incoming-by-incoming basis.  Others leave it in batches, say, once a month.  And there are those who have it set up automatically so that when you leave your green, you receive yours in return with in a minute or two.

The reasons may vary.  Some leave it right after payment in the hope you will reciprocate when you get the item.  Others simply will not leave a positive for people who leave neutrals and negs.  Fair enough.  That is probably how your seller approaches it.  You will find many like that.  So leave your positive.  Check his outgoing to see if he will leave yours right away, - or has he just done several dozen and will not leave it for a month when he does several dozen more.

If you cannot leave feedback that means there is a problem, so always contact the seller first.  Most sellers will move heaven & earth to work with you to fix things up so both of you are happy.  And then give them the green they deserve.  If you leave feedback and don't get any in return, - does it really matter?
