2019 new eBay tax

One thing I find so stupid is that Canada will charge you tax on the item you buy in USA off eBay, Now this item is from USA not Canada, Why should Canada beable to get taxes on items not sold in Canada online? Not right. There is no such thing as international tax so why is Canada able to tax it? I'm not part of USA and from Canada so I shouldn't get taxed buying from non Canadian sellers, Only if I was purchasing in my own country online, Unless I was traveling in USA I'd be taxed then its there country there rules, But when its online Canada SHOULD NOT be allowed to tax you for buying from international sellers. It should be if you live in Canada and buy from Canada ok get taxed, if live in USA and buy from USA seller ok get taxed. But if I'm from Canada buying from USA, Canada shouldn't have rights to tax what isn't from Canada only the import fee when it gets to canada if needed to be charged. Plus if I'm not from USA or even traveling in USA there for I shouldn't be taxed since it's used goods online. You only should be taxed by your country you live in and buy from. Who agrees. We allready pay for the item, then shipping, then with some sellers import fees, then PayPal transfer fee like $1 and now taxes. Plus the money exchange from different currency. Canada isn't as high as USA so we pay more there to. When does this BS end. And they say online buying is the new fad as to why stores either close or you don't find tons of people in them like the old days. Such as Video/Cd/Renting stores we have much loved have closed over the years. So if online buying is the new fad, just think how much more your paying in the long run then just getting it from a store near you or used from someone else online you can just meet up with and not have to pay all these fees. Lets say a $10 game you wish to purchase off ebay then becomes 3-4 times that. Shipping $12-$25, just on 1 game/dvd. Import fees $5 and up, if applyable but not always, paypal transfers $1, taxes like 13% but depends on price and country i guess, the currency exchange. Well that $10 game is now with all the whoping fees $25-$45 unreal. Makes me want to find it local or in the area and get it.

Your choice. No one is forcing you to buy from out of country.

Re: 2019 new eBay tax

Canada charges duty on imports over $20 Cdn (~$15US) and sales taxes on those imports.

Even if duty is not applicable, sales taxes are still charged.

In addition, the carrier can charge a service fee for wrangling the item through customs and collecting the import fees.

If you purchase through the GSP, all these fees are charged before the seller is told to ship. The GSP service fee is ~$5 US.

If your seller ships directly through USPS and Canada Post, these fees will be charged on your doorstep. The Canada Post service fee is $9.95.

  • Note that CBSA has made a practice of not assessing low value imports probably because it would cost the taxpayer too much for the small amounts that could be collected.

If your seller ships directly using a courier like UPS, these fees will be charged on your doorstep. The UPS service fee starts at $25 and goes up with the value of the import.

BTW- if you buy an item in Canada that was manufactured elsewhere, the company that imported it paid duty and taxes at the border, the wholesaler  paid taxes again when they bought from the importer, and the shop paid taxes again when they bought from the importer, and you paid tax when you bought from the store.

TL/DR -- Your premise is wrong.

Many countries have laws and mechanisms in place for the collection of taxes (and duties) on personal imports shipped from out of the country.

In the United States, these are called "use taxes" and they can apply at both the municipal and state levels. Until recently, however, the means for collecting these taxes have been largely weak and uninforcable.

Here's one of several recent news pieces on the subject:

Try to use Canada Only when searching for items to buy. Also don't buy from a seller using GSP if you live in Canada. It's useless for Canadian buyers.
