50% UPS Brokerage fee????

I bought an item that was $99.95 US. The Seller charged me $16.00 for UPS standard shipping to Canada.

The package arrived and here is a Brokerage C.O.D. due to UPS for $54.17. What a rip! The seller said nothing about additional fees due IN ADDITION to the $16.00 I paid him for the shipping. By looking under Help in eBay, I see there is nothing I can do about it.

Well, I just got hit with a 59$ custom fee from UPS on a 100$ purchase. This is also my second post about it, because my first got removed by the moderators... yeah I went a bit hard.
A few things we can do about it though to make people aware if this non-sense:

1) Ask sellers that provide UPS as an option to AT LEAST mention the insane fees UPS (and from what I could read, other carriers also) charge for custom fees (50% and up).

2) Never use UPS as a service when we sell.

3) Have a sticky post on the Canada forum about this (if it isn't there yet).

4) Any other way so people don't get caught like we did.

stop buying from sellers who ship UPS from the states. If this is your second time, you know that there is going to be brokerage, so why complain?

FYI: this happens not just with items purchased with eBay .. prior to eBay joining this world, Canadians quickly learned that if they purchased an item from a retail outlet in the USA and had it shipped to them here in Canada via courier (most retailers will ONLY use courier), then there would be a brokerage charge in addition to taxes (GST, PST) to be paid on the item.

It is up to the RECIPIENT of the item to know their own country's regulations.

No argument here chat, just my observation about PayPal making it EASY for eBay Sellers to use UPS.

In fact with the USPS Rate Increase MORE Sellers might think they are doing Buyers a favour if UPS Rates are less?

I, too have learned my lesson when dealing with sellers using UPS. DON'T !!! Bought a retired Webkinz for $63.00 US and paid $32.24 in brokerage fees. Not the sellers fault, blame UPS. Left positive feedback, however contacted seller suggesting they switch carriers, and that I would no longer buy if shipping UPS. No response from seller yet 😞

FYI: even retail businesses in the USA will ship via courier service - you're not going to change the whole world to ship via postal service

There are at least 3 US retail websites that I visit, and from whom I would love to buy. Unfortunately, they all ship UPS. I'm not prepared to pay twice the price (selling price plus brokerage) for the privilege of owning one of their items, so I just look, sigh, and move on...
