Global Shipping Canada Post Nightmare

Of course, the one item I would like isn't on Amazon so I'm forced to shop eBay for one item.

I give my physical address thinking like any other international shipping service it would arrive from DHL or other postal means of course Ebay's Global Shipping Program does not give you the carrier name or carrier specific tracking number.

Why is there no option of choice of postal carrier?

Canada Post does NOT DELIVER to my physical address, and the items listed DO NOT ship to a P.O Box.

Naturally, I input my physical address assuming since they won't ship to a P.O Box it must be being shipped via Fedex or someone that does deliver to my doorstep.

Now Canada post has my expensive item, said they tried to deliver which they didn't left a note, which they didn't and nowhere to pickup because the item is in limbo not having a deliverable address.

Beyond frustrating.  Skip the GSP SHIP DIRECTLY WITH DHL.

Global Shipping Canada Post Nightmare

Canada Post does NOT DELIVER to my physical address, and the items listed DO NOT ship to a P.O Box.

Sigh.

Many US sellers, stupidly, do not ship to PO boxes.

Once upon a time US sellers who used couriers (like UPS) could not deliver to post office addresses because the PO clerks would not sign and take responsibility for them.

This is no longer true, but newbies copy old Terms of Sale without understanding what those ToS say and why and what they actually mean.

When I look up some of my customers on Google Maps (because I'm nosy and have way too much time in my hands) I notice that a lot of what seem to be apartment addresses
 #123-- 45Main St.

Anytown NY 90210

are actually strip malls with a post office or a Mailboxes R Us outlet.

PO boxes are the safest addresses. Only a keyholder can open them and if the item won't fit in the box, the keyholder has to present ID to claim the parcel from the clerk.

The seller is one of those dimwits. Out of touch and... well any seller using the GSP is paranoid to begin with, since there are cheaper and equally secure shipping methods available.

The demand is not enforceable.

Does your local Post Office or postal outlet ever receive items that were not left in boxes or which were improperly addressed?

Anyway.

GSP gets purchases from sellers, most of whom use USPS.

They they ship pallets and containers of purchases together to Canada (and over a hundred other countries).

Normally those pallets end up at Canada Post in Mississauga.

And usually those purchases are then shipped by Canada Post, unless they are too large-- in which case they are also too large for GPS.

Now Canada post has my expensive item, said they tried to deliver which they didn't left a note, which they didn't and nowhere to pickup because the item is in limbo not having a deliverable address.

Canada Post does deliver to PO boxes and community mailboxes.

If you had given your mailing address you would have your package.

That note should tell you where and when you can pick it up...

They only Hold items for a short time, usually about a week.

That was your first mistake- giving an undeliverable address.

Worse.

By giving an undeliverable (street)  address, you opted out of the Money Back Guarantee.

If your purchase is not at the PO waiting for pickup, you may not be able to use the MBG to get a refund.

This is where the GSP is a saving grace.

Open the Item Not Received Dispute in the Resolution Centre at the bottom of this page.

Request a GSP specialist look at the Dispute.

Most Disputes are handled by robots, this should put it in the hands of a trained human being.

As to trackingnumber: once your package leaves the Erlanger KY plant, you should be emailed a tracking number .

Now some boilerplate:

Unison worked this out for buyers who have not yet received their GSP shipment.
TRACKING SYSTEM FOR GSP
I found this thread today while awaiting a shipment. Once I learned that Pitney Bowes was the relevant company, I was able to find my package's tracking info in about 10 seconds.

Step 1: Go to the Pitney Bowes Parcel Tracker page at https://parceltracking.pb.com/app/#/dashboard/

Step 2: Enter your eBay-supplied Global Tracking number (mine began with UPAA...)

Step 3: You will be shown limited tracking info. In my case, only up to the point the package left the USA and entered Canada.

Step 4: Click on the "Track on carrier's website" link at the top right.

Step 5: You will be provided with tracking on the page of the actual shipping company, in my case Canada Post, with a tracking number in THEIR system.

Problem solved! If only eBay would put a link to https://parceltracking.pb.com/app/#/dashboard/ in their shipping emails, this could all be avoided...

I have on Ebay's side, they requested me to make a police report, provide them with the incident number officers name and badge number and a whole bunch of other run around.  I can't file a police report as there is no crime committed and filing a police report without a crime being committed is a criminal offence.

I'm confused by what you are saying about Canada Post's attempt to deliver.

You say they didn't try, since they don't deliver to your street address and you didn't give your PO box.

How do you know they tried to deliver then?

Phone or go into your local PO and ask if the parcel is there.

If you go online you will be talking to a nice lady in New Brunswick. You want someone who can look at the shelf behind the counter.

So don't go online.

The UPxxxxxxxxx number should be useable by Canada Post to tell where your undeliverable parcel is being held.

Phone or visit the local post office with the tracking number on the "unable to deliver" note. Find out where the parcel is.

Go there.

Bring picture ID.

GSP decides which carrier gets the package regarding what is available at the time it gets sent and the cheapest one for them. That's it; you have no control over that...
Now why Canada Post does not deliver to your physical address? It's actually the only mail carrier that will do every place (including P.O. box)! And Fedex or UPS might even subcontract the last leg of their route to Canada Post when it's too far from their own routes.
There is a lot missing in your post, so we can't help you much...

The OP may be stuck with a Community Mail Box.

No home delivery in that area, large parcels go in the big box with a key left in the recipient's postal box.

My parents have had a community mailbox for 15 years at 2 different locations, but that doesn't impact the delivery of mail or packages from other carriers. Only the mailbox owner knows where to pick up its mail (# on the box), while his postal address is written the same as his civic address (which would also be used for private carriers). I still don't understand the OP's situation...

BIL had a community mailbox in the trailer park where he lived.

That had a box number, since the park was entirely private.

I guess there are different systems used depending on the local situation.

I know suburbs usually have the house address even if they actually have  boxes.

Yes, it sounds like your BIL had something different from a Canada Post Community Mailbox and had something more along the lines of what you'd find in a large apartment building, but with box numbers.  Canada Post Community Boxes--like the suburban ones you describe--just use the householders' addresses to identify the individual box.

Back to the OP's issue, if I'm understanding the issue correctly, the OP saw a note in the listing description that the seller didn't ship to PO boxes and was thrown by this, coming to the not unreasonable conclusion that this would apply to the GSP as well, which is the case in most countries.

For me, a simple butt-covering solution for future purchases would be to have both the PO box and street address on file with eBay and PayPal, using the postal code for the PO box as the street address likely wouldn't have a postal code, or would have the same postal code if we're talking about a small rural location.

No it really was a Canada Post Community mail box. One night it got broken into an there was a lot of damage. Canada Post took two weeks to replace the boxes, and in the meantime everyone had to go to the PO for their mail.

The trailer park had two sections. The older part was -- remember Trailer Park Boys?  Yeah.

BIL lived in the new part where the tiny houses (about 500sq ft) had granite countertops and steep pitched roofs. They were actually smaller than most mobile homes and cost more but they looked pretty.

Everyone had the same street address - the park address- with a unit number. Like 3042 River Road # 43, Chemainus.

I agree with the buttcover. Or like my American customers who just write their PO box addresses as if they were apartments.

1123 Anyroad St. Unit 345, Anytown NY 90210

I gather the couriers can now delivery to PO boxes so the practice is obsolete.
