I think you're asking why you were charged the converted CAD$ amount on PayPal instead of the US$ amount on your invoice.

You can set up a default to do that, but sometimes it gets overridden. Just make sure to select "conversion options" and "conversion by card issuer" when you purchase, before you hit "pay now".

Just to add to @teenytrinkets' excellent post, watch out if you're getting your credit card issuer to convert currencies rather than PayPal.  My VISA issuer charges a 2% currency conversion fee rather than PayPal's fee of 2.5%, but the exchange rate they use is from VISA International and not as good as PayPal's.

Paypal's currency conversion rate is 3 or 4%.

 

4% for sending/receiving personal payments, commercial transactions and when using Paypal Payouts.

3% for other transactions

All the same, when I last checked, I was still getting a better deal with PayPal than with my VISA.
