Hi everyone - I don't pop in here too often, but certainly enjoy reading the posts.
My almost 7yr old son came up with a question that I personally had never really thought about, but certainly made me stop - especially thinking of a New Year about to start, beginnings, etc....
" How did God start? "

I saw your question early this morning and was hoping that someone would come along and post a reply.
Your son asks a question which is very common for young minds (and probably for many older ones as well).
My thoughts: From the perspective of the Bible, we understand that God always was, is, and always will be. He is not restricted by time, as He created time itself. He is eternal and thus always existed, as He exists in eternity, apart or outside of time (and space). He is the great cause of the “beginning” and the “sustainer “of all that comes out of, or, from that beginning. In other words for a young mind “He was always there, or always existed and will always be there”. We know Him as the self existent One.
As we are created by Him we are finite and understand that we had a beginning. But He is infinite and was before any beginning and will always exist into the future, even after time has run its course. Thus He is from everlasting to everlasting. In such a God we can have complete confidence.
In the Old Testament, God reveals Himself through the various writers by several dozen self contained names (most often translated as God or Lord). Each name of God, helps us, with our finite minds to comprehend an Infinite person .... Himself. Each name represents one side of a multi-facet diamond that is absolutely beautiful, almost beyond our comprehension. One of those names is El Olam, meaning, The Everlasting God, The God of Eternity, The God of the Universe, and The God of Ancient Days.
EL is one of the names that is often translated as "God" and can be used in conjunction with other words to designate various aspects of God's character. Olam is derived from the root word ‘lm (which means "eternity"). Olam literally means "forever," "eternity," or "everlasting". When the two words are combined - El Olam — it can be translated as "The Eternal God."
The first time this name of God is used is found in Gen 21:33 – “And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.”
The Lord Himself encourages us in the New Testament to bring the younger ones to learn of Him ...
Luk. 18:16 But Jesus called them unto Him , and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
Young children are very keen on learning about Him and can often ask the tough questions. But also they are often able to easily accept and understand the answers.
I do hope these thoughts are of some help. :-x

"I am what I shall prove to be" has always stuck with me when considering all that God is. To me, this encourages self-development and disperses fear as to our own futures. If God isn't willing to back himself into a corner, a narrow definition or something very specific, why should we?
Susan
Blessings to all as we start another year.

check out the one in the lower right hand corner ... you can click on it to expand ....
it is the one showing the solar winds stripping away the atmosphere from the planet Venus ... and it is simply amazing ....
of course if you have an inquiring mind like mine, you would ask "so if this has been going on for a very long time, how come there is still any atmosphere to strip away ????? ..... hummmmmm!!!!!!
you got to love science... !!!!!

Andrew, I had not seen the earlier posts but I would not have known how to answer that question. I just know. I can't explain but for me it is the truth.
I am on Altar duty this week and it is a bit of a struggle for someone not raised in any church, but especially not the Anglican church. I went and set up the Altar. Our priest is on leave and a retired priest is taking his place. When he arrived, I mentioned to him to tell me anything he wanted changed and also told him I have had a couple of mini strokes and every once in awhile something just veers off in my mind so there could be a mistake in the setup. He said not to worry, he couldn't remember either and said to watch how many times he fumbles in the serice. I guess the good thing is we are all older in this church so when there is a mistake is made, we aren't sure if it is us or the other guy. I am sure God doesn't mind, and smiles down on us. Just the same, I am glad not on the Altar Guild of the Cathedral.:-)
Those pictures are just amazing. Next time I baby sit DGS, I am going to show him. He will just love them.

I was asked one year to make up the reading list. I went to the ABC and got the calendar and was quite happy with my efforts.
Sunday, it came time for the reading. The reader started, only to be interrupted by the priest. I had the reading wrong! Of course, the sermon was partially based on the correct reading. I could have crawled under the pew.

The last time I did the Altar there was an unusual number of people who showed up. I was glad to see the congregation grow, but I also know I had put 40 hosts in the bread box (more than enough usually) and I could count over 70 members. I knew there weren't any extra which had been blessed and were in the cabinet (aumbry?) because we had decided they might get stale and had emptied the cabinet, and put them out for a previous service. I could see the priest watching as more and more people came to the rail. He started to break the wafers in half, then quarters. Luckily he made it through--but everyone was wondering what had happened. I was embarrassed and I now load that breadbox!
Sweet dreams everyone.

I'm sure God doesn't mind. (I actually picture him smiling down as the priest was breaking the wafers into quarters). If we were perfect we wouldn't need him would we? 😉
We drove home Sunday. I worked 12 hour shifts Mon, Tues and Wed and so today has been a VERY lazy day!
Wishing you all a very blessed, healthy, happy and prosperous 2009!

Christine, your email works perfectly. Maybe someone just couldn't get the security nos. right. So troublesome. 😉
Beautiful sunny day here. Lots of waterfowl in the bay. Going to try to get a walk in between food engagements. Only 3 days left, and then back to regular food--just in time too, my jeans are not as comfortable as they used to be.

LOL at that phrase! I will remember that.
I sympathize. It's all over for me come Monday too. I think I will bring most of the chocolate I still have to Church on Sunday. I can't eat it if I don't have it! In other words, I don't have a lot of willpower when it comes to sweets. May everyone celebrate a blessed Epiphany!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that who so ever believeth in Him, should not perish, but hath everlasting life.
Almost 2000 years ago the creator of the universe allowed His creation to falsily acuise Him of wrong doing. And on the cross of Calvary all our sins were layed upon Him and God judjed those sins ... When He shall see the travail of His soul He shall be satisfied

everyone we are created equal before God !!!!!
We are all the same >
sinners in need of a savior .....
God so loved the world ..... me included .... that He Gave His only Begotten Son that whoso ever believth in Him should not perish, BUT hath (present tense) everlasting life .. can God lie?????? can mankind lie ?????
The answer is simple ... He died for me .... on a dark night in Nov in 1982 I met this wonderful person and He told me this truth .... can you denie it .???? I do not think so .
