Re: Discussion with eBay.ca Country Manager, Friday February 18, 1-2 PM ET

Hi ilovemybabybrandon -

Great question and we agree. So, two main points here. Within eBay, eBay Canada is now part of the North American organization just for this reason. We all recognize the power of cross-border trade within North America and, for that matter, throughout the world.

So, one of the things our team is focused on is getting US sellers to open their listings to Canadian buyers and to gain a better understanding (and experience) of how easy it is to ship cross border. So, this is one of our focus areas and I'm glad you brought it up.

Hello, Gary:

There is a perception over at the Powersellers discussion board that benefits of being a Canadian Powerseller have diminished over the past couple of years. Powersellers in the U.S. receive occasional gifts from eBay, such as card holders, t-shirts and so on, while Canadian powersellers do not. U.S. Powersellers have regular visits from eBay representatives on their board while Canadian powersellers no longer do. Also, it seems that the promised "starter kit" for Canadian powersellers are not being sent out. I know I never received mine when I became a PS and other Powersellers have reported that they haven't received the kit either. Could you please let us know if eBay.ca will be addressing these perceptions.

Thanks!
Ernie.

I sell Internationally. Canada Post gave us a 30% hick of postage fees and i already have a discount with them. How can we be competitive onthe market if USPS is so cheapand Canada Post is so expensive ? I charge ONLY Exact Postage Cost No Handling No hidden Fees. I pay for boxes and all furniture while Americans always charge for handling and are still cheaper than us Canadians. We must i make my money ? If i charge $1.00US for handling people dont pay me. I know you willrefund FVF but you never refund listing fees, therefore it's a lost for me. Please answer my questions Sir.

Re: Discussion with eBay.ca Country Manager, Friday February 18, 1-2 PM ET

To sphinx64_com -

Let me answer both of your next questions here, if that's OK.

Regarding fees, I know this is a sore subject right now, especially perhaps today, as the revised fees are effective today.

So, first, I just want to be sure that folks are clear that the fee increases recently announced for Final Value Fees are only for Store Listings. There has been some confusion about this. The increase is not on "core" listings.

Second, to echo what Bill mentioned yesterday, I don't think we communicated this well. Last year, we decreased the Stores listings fee from 5 cents to 2 cents. We were hoping to have sellers stock more listings on the Stores "shelves" and they did. Stores have been very successful. The reason to raise the Final Value Fee for Stores is to make the FVF equal to the rates for "core" listings. Again, much cheaper to put an item "on the shelf" in a Store but allow equality on items when they sell. We probably should have done these two things together in hindsight (lower Stores insertion fees and raise Stores FVF). We didn't and I think it feels to Sellers that we're be unfair. That is not our goal nor sentiment. We want a vibrant marketplace for all -- whether selling in core listings or Stores.

Now to the question of Stores subscription costs, we are raising that fee as we have substantially and will substantially invest in Stores functionality. If you go back 2 years, Stores did not have Search, customizable templates, etc. Now they do. We think the new fee is a fair charge for much stronger functionality.

In addition, as Bill announced (and to your other question) we are adding phone support for all eBay Store owners and have increased the FVF credit to 75% if you drive a buyer to your own store.

Finally, and I hope I got your next question right, you can use the search box on the main Stores page to find a Store by name. I do it all the time when I buy shoes!

When i try to send my invoice thrue eBay.com to a canadian buyer alli see in the checkout process is CANADA, i never see there name, address and postal code ! How can i invoice the client if i am not able to determine postage cost according to their postal code ? Same goes when the buyer is American except i can see ONLy his Zip Code, this make me have to go on USPS web site to find out to which state this zip code is then go on Canada Post web site to find out the price for mail ? Do you think that we should be able to see the full address and name of our buyers to be able to invoice them and to know with whom we deal ? If it's a P.O. Box or a civic address. This step of having to search or wright to the buyer slows the whole process and let us work on other things than listings !

Hi able-wizard1957 -

I'm happy that you asked about eBay on the Road 2005! I love this program and it is a great way for us who work in Toronto to get out and meet the Community. It's also a great venue for eBayers to meet other eBayers (and to bring new folks into our world).

We will be announcing the 2005 cities soon. Please keep a look out on the eBay on the Road board. Also, as last year, we will be sending out email to registered users when we're coming to your region. Hope to see you there!

Mr.Briggs;

Thank you for your response. When you get to B.C. please find a better venue than UBC (2004) such as perhaps the Tradex Centre in Abbotsford.

Yes you will see us there.

Bud and Stephanie.

Hi seana58 -

Regarding your question about an ebay "email program" we have discussed this from time to time. As of now, we have nothing to announce on this. I hear this question a bit (especially when out on On The Road) as folks want to show their eBay pride with an email address such as "@ebaycommunity.com".

Hi imagi.nation -

We do still send out the PowerSeller welcome kits. We sometimes get them returned for improper addresses and, just to be sure, we send them out in batches -- every month or so.

If you haven't received it, two suggestions. First, make sure your preferences are set to allow you to receive "direct mail". Second, if you've done that, send an email to your PowerSeller rep and we'll check and then send you a kit. And thanks for being a PowerSeller!

Sir, all the companies on Planet Earth have phone support for all members. It took me 3 years to have access to phone support. Are you going to tellme that eBay has more clients than VISA, McCard or any International Company ? Personnaly i have built so much frustration concerning this matter. It's not wright to eBay to discriminate. Allmy web suppliers offer phone support. My internet provider, my web hoster, my domain name provider. I know i ask sharp questions but be sure that these are honest questions. Also, you're people at live chat and Power Seller phone support alwayshands us the answer "We understand you're frustration" For me if somebody tellme they understand my frustration, they should act in consequence, but you're people trhow this answr at us and never correct the situation ! Why ? Perhaps they should stop saying this phrase !

Hi, Gary:

Thanks for the answer. Being a Bronze, I don't have a Powerseller Rep. I believe only Golds and highers receive reps. How about getting some reps to visit the Powersellers board on a regular basis to keep up with things like this! I'm not the only one who has not been receiving items from eBay!

Thanks,
Ernie.

Hi sphinx64_com --

You're right! You do have a lot of questions and I hope to do well answering them.

Regarding coming to Montreal for On The Road, it is linked to the launch of a site for French-speaking Canadians. When we launch that site, we're coming!!!

Regarding getting the postal code/zip code of a buyer, do you use PayPal? Because when you get the checkout information from a buyer, this information (address, postal/zip) is filled in on the form.

Regarding Canada Post costs, this one is a hard one, frankly. We have a great relationship with Canada Post and have had discussions with them about what we might be able to do to help eBay sellers. All I can say at this point is that we understand that this is a "pain point" for you and we're hoping to address it.
