So Canadian buyers now have to pay both the provincial and federal sales tax on used items regardless if they are a business or not and to add insult to injury they charge the taxes on top of the shipping cost as well.   eBay might as well shut down their Canadian operation becasue no one in theri right minds will be selling or buying from Canada !

This is law now so my question is did you vote for the people in power now? If you did, then you voted for it.

Vote different next time.

It is the seller's responsibility to learn, know and understand the rules, policies, fees, Updates, changes, additions, deletions ammendments, etc. on a selling site BEFORE listing any items. It is a BUYER'S responsibility to learn, know and understand the fees, charges on items BEFORE making ANY purchase. Surely you did not expect eBay to remain the same after all these years and that everything would be exactly as you left it all those years ago...

"eBay might as well shut down their Canadian operation becasue no one in theri right minds will be selling or buying from Canada !"

well many of us Canadian sellers are indeed STILL HERE AND STILL SELLING! and yes many Canadian buyers ARE STILL HERE AND STILL BUYING!

Taxes/sales taxes on used goods are a fact of life and we have been paying them on used items for years...

Yes paying taxes on used goods is relatively new in the online selling world but NOT THAT NEW anymore!

and taxes on shipping also not new...GST/HST etc has been charged on stamps, postage by Canada Post for years!

BTW, charging taxes IS NOT unique to eBay...applies to other Marketplace facillitators as well...

Perhaps take the time to read up on the taxation laws here in Canada that are applicable to online selling sites.

Have a nice day!

This is a federal law.

It is meant, in part, to support local businesses, which do charge taxes, and have been hurt by online sellers who did not.

It is applied to all online venues, including Amazon, etsy, WalMart, Canadian Tire- any "marketplace facilitator"  that have over $30,000 in sales pass through them annually.

Technically speaking, we're supposed to pay taxes (and duties, if applicable) on items we order from outside of Canada, too.  The tax-free threshold for mailed items is C$20 and for items sent by courier or similar US$40 if they originate from the United States or Mexico.

The quirk here, @etow202, is that for many years, Canada Border Services has been pretty lax about assessing and charging taxes and duties owed on items sent through the mail.

Also consider that most of our American cousins as well as our cousins in a lot of other industrailzed nations have been charged tax on their online purchases for a few years now--even purchases of used items--from marketplace websites and similar.  Canada kind of caught up to those countries last year, but the taxation of items from outside of Canada is still being handled by Canada Border Services (see earlier point).

Also consider that even before Revenue Canada amended and added to the laws concerning the taxation of transactions on digitial marketplaces like eBay, there were some eBay sellers who were charging taxes on their sales because they were registered to do so.  See @reallynicestamps' point about the $30K threshold.
