TOPIC: As a buyer and a seller I am concerned that "Items in Carts" that are never purchased may be related to difficulties during the check-out process.
I've many buyers contact me with various concerns about not being able to pay for a variety of reasons, a rather high amount, with a variety of solutions. So far all have been solved with a little digging.
But there are lots of items in carts that never get purchased. Sure a couple may be using it as a wishlist or a temporary cache while searching comparable for a purchase, but it is an unusually high amount. As a buyer I can't imaging holding an item in the cart without an intention not to purchase. Its a dangerous limbo.
Many people don't contact and contacting isn't always the easiest or most intuitive during the checkout experience.
I too have difficulty purchasing items on eBay, experiencing a variety of different errors during the check-out process. And I don't always contact the seller, often I purchase elsewhere or not at all. (As a seller this is worrisome.)
While a common experience on eBay I find it uncommon on other sites
Has anyone else experienced this or have similar concerns or ideas?
The newest scenario encountered is the non-acceptance of a CC with a middle name. The eBay system kept taking a name and moving it around from first to last from last to first and not allowing it with only first / last.
UPDATE: Sorry, this should have been posted in Seller Central.

I've also had various issues with customers and the shopping cart in the past. I had a customer who wanted to split an international purchase into 2 shipments for customs purposes. There was no way to do it other than to do 1 purchase..Pay and then do the 2nd purchase. My main concern is that if a buyer does have a problem, especially on dot ca the buyer is left up in the air. Possibly why they may leave the item in the cart until the cows come home. From stories I've heard on dot com, they are given a specific error message when there is a problem as standard practice.

I have also had problems with items in my cart not being sold. I have been reducing them as suggested, but still no sale.
I think the reason in my case is that it seems impossible for buyers to purchase multiple items and not be able to ask for a combined shipping invoice before paying. It happens to me every couple of weeks that buyers can't get a combined shipping request.

Buyers keep items in carts to get notifications on discounts or availability. These are your tire kickers. If the items you get notifications on are multi-quantity listings, try cutting your available quantities to 1. Seems to have much better conversion than discounting. YMMV.

It is not that I have multiples of the same items, it is buyers putting different items in the cart that they are interested in their cart and want a combined shipping invoice, I usually find that out too late.

It may seem counterintuitive but it is fairly common practice on larger ecommerce sites for regular shoppers to just keep things at the cart level and check up on pricing/availability. Ebay doesn't purge cart level data, hence it gets used as wishlist. I can't recall anyone messaging me about a payment issue in years, but I put a promo shipping rate as a cap for a worst case scenario shipping cost-wise, so buyers at least see some discounted rate. A bit trickier with Canadian rates though.
If you ask ebay they'll just say free shipping on everything since it boosts their GMV. Enabling accurate volumetric calculated rates at the cart level is easily implemented on a programming level, ebay is not doing it because they make more money this way even with seller refunds (most won't bother with FVF credit requests) and per item shipping costs added to items with free shipping. This is how they cook the books and inflate GMV.
