Combined shipping, would you refund $1.00

I have a person who purchased 2 CD's from me and I am able to get them into one envelope.  I list on .com and .ca and this person bought 1 from each site.  The savings is about $1.00 putting it into one envelope.  They paid about $7.00 shipping.  My costs will be about $6.00 including in the large bubble envelope.

I had refunded another buyer last week and he told me he didn't care about the $1.00.

What are your feelings?  WWYD?

But femme's reply seems to suggest to refund less the paypal fee.

I refunded a shipping amount that I wanted, then paypal gave me some of the fee back. That is different than refunding less the paypal fee.

It makes perfect sense paypal does not refund the 30cents, b/c there is

still a payment, I am only refunding a portion of it.  If the buyer paid the correct amount to begin with, paypal would still be getting the 30c.

Not all, but most shipping refunds involve situations where more than one item was purchased but paid for separately causing the seller to incur 2 or more 30 cent transaction fees.

So, most likely what femme was suggesting was to deduct the cost of the extra transaction fees from a Combined Shipping refund.

Example; Buyer purchases items A and B but pays for them on separate invoices. As a result the seller incurs 0.30 x 2 = 0.60 cents in transaction fees instead of only 0.30 cents had the buyer purchased both items and paid on a single (combined) invoice.

In this example the seller calculates the amount to be refunded like this;

(total shipping savings) - 0.30 = amount refunded to buyer.

Or... switching to Calculated Shipping eliminates the need to decide whether to refund a dollar or not. Proper postage amounts are calculated by weight and volume.

Too much work to change my existing listings lol. My listings are set up with free shipping to Canada and USA, and then flat rate $5 (<250g) or $10 (<500g) for international.

I think my current set up works for me since I think for international buyer, seeing a $5 for international shipping for a book is more acceptable than CP's actual $10-12 small packet air for under 250g. I add $5 in my listed prices to include <200g "free" shipping to USA. My books are mostly ranged in $15-$35, so $10-12 calculated for international shipping would probably seem expensive for international buyers. That being said, when I do get the odd Australian buyer which shipping is $12, I "lose" $2 so I get it from my cookie jar lol. This keeps things simple for me.

I wouldn't worry about a $1.00 refund. If they even notice, they would probably think it was just for listing or other fees, or for handling. As a buyer, I've often paid several dollars more than actual shipping but I don't begrudge it. In fact I admire them for being able to sell the item without being out of pocket for fees and supplies ... unlike myself who doesn't charge for tissue, boxes, or bubble envelopes and subsidizes a portion of the  postage.

There have been occasions, however, when I've returned $2.00 - $5.00 in cash in the parcel and not bothered going through PayPal. I think buyers get a kick out of receiving cold, hard cash.

If if I have some American money on hand, I do the same for U.S. buyers or I might use PayPal.
