And on a related note......
And don't forget to offer free shipping while doing so.

Or maybe they should just recommend we all give the stuff away (while continuing to pay their fees of course).
To be a little more serious, I have to wonder whether people are getting overwhelmed with "buy now" pressure from every corner, pop-ups and 70%-off sales, sales, sales in their faces everywhere, constantly. This has a certain whiff of pathetic desperation to it, not to mention being highly annoying. At some point the result could well be a consumer backlash.
At one time, the customer sought out the product (or seller) for what they wanted or needed, and retailers politely advertised in places their buyers might tend to look, including trade magazines, favourite sites or TV programmes etc. In other words, fairly non-invasive marketing. Even eBay was relatively courteous to its buyers until about 3 years ago.
Now the product (and the venues) relentlessly and vehemently pursue buyers, invading their every online space, thanks to things like "Ad Choice", scooped up data on buying habits, and snooping and following programmes of all sorts. You may recall my "Tale of the Teapot", where one solitary online teapot purchase resulted in a barrage of teapot and teapot-related pop up ads following me everywhere online for weeks. Those later morphed into generic ads by the same company. Honestly, I was considering never buyer from that retailer again.
Will consumers ultimately take things into their own hands and demand that governments severely regulate where, when and how consumers' virtual space is infringed upon? There is of course already some legislation in place to that effect, but I think a tipping point might arrive soon.
In the meantime, to return to my black humour, let's all mark all all of our items down by 70%. Where's the sale when everything is on sale? It's just a race to the bottom.

As predicted.
How long till sponsored spots are available to buy on product pages?

That might be an improvement over the eBay-picked seller added to the catalogue card.
At times like this I recall a once famous Canadian retailer that had the slogan "the lowest price is the law" and wonder whether that was the most appropriate choice of words.
