Getting Paid With Paypal - No More?

Is there any way we sellers can still get paid through Paypal, now that we've been forced to switch to Managed Payments? I don't see PP as an option for getting paid anymore, and I'm extremely disappointed. I greatly preferred getting paid with PP, so I could directly use that money for other purchases. The way it works now, I have to put things on my credit card and then take money from the bank to cover it. It also means that my Mom, who does my banking, can now keep track of every dollar I spend.

I'm assuming this ship has already sailed (sunk might be a better word), but if there is a way around this I'd like to know. It's worth noting that the eBay help pages still say you can accept PP as a form of payment, but maybe these just haven't been removed yet.

I'm really beginning to miss 2019... no masks, no distancing, free to travel and socialize, and now I can add getting paid with Paypal to that list.

Once a seller has registered to use Managed Payments,  the money for all purchases.... item sold plus postage ... is handled by Adyen....

A seller will no longer use Paypal when an item is purchased on eBay.

One has to be careful about the information on eBay...

Sellers that are NOT registered for Managed Payments still use Paypal to handle the money for all transactions on eBay...  The information can be for these people...  specifically... or for sellers that use Managed Payments....  specifically.

A buyer CAN USE Paypal to pay for a purchased item from a Managed Payments seller on eBay.  Adyen takes control of this payment

Managed Payments is the new reality on eBay....  Once a seller is registered to use Managed Payments.....  Managed Payments has control  of all the money from sales for that seller.

Each seller must make the appropriate adjustment with Managed Payments.

I have been using Managed Payments since August  2020.....  Everything works well for me.

Necessary adjustments   were easy to make  ...

Are you able to open your own bank account for payments and get a low credit limit credit card from your bank or credit union?  I have a relative with a "hidden" disability who was able to get a credit card with a $500 limit despite only collecting disability payments at the time.

I didn't have a choice in switching to MP... my selling account was suspended until I did it.

I since thought of something.... if I switch my payout setting to weekly payout, could I pay for purchases using money that hasn't yet been sent to my bank account?

eBay has certainly changed a lot in the 18 years I've been using it... and most of those changes have not been for the better.  Fortunately, I hope to soon move on to greener pastures and leave eBay selling behind.... just glad I had as much fun with it while I could.

Money ready for a Managed Payments payout cannot be used to buy something on eBay.

Transfer the payout money to your bank account, and use a credit card to pay for items purchased on eBay

Getting Paid With Paypal - No More?

Just switched over to Managed Payments and I would like to know why it takes eBay 4 days to process a payment, when it only took minutes for Paypal to do the exact same thing.

I am NOT shipping anything out until that payment shows up as processed (buyers changing their mind, credit card payments not going through/declined, etc.)

It also takes PayPal several days to process a payment.  The difference is that PayPal advances sellers the funds as long as the buyer uses a credit card or has a credit card backing up their PayPal account if the buyer pays out of a bank account.

My understanding is that if a credit card payment is declined, the buyer knows about it right away (just like if they're using their credit card in a store) and the seller won't be advised of a "pending" payment.  Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I did that at first also thinking if I purchased something it would take the money out of those funds. It doesn't.  The payment gets withdrawn from your bank account.  They haven't figured that one out yet.  I purchased a couple of items for a friend and it came from my bank account. Not the money in MP that was sitting there. So I switched it to be deposit daily into my bank account. No reason whatsoever to leave it sitting there for a week, nothing you can do with it anyways.

Very frustrating system.

What happens with credit card chargebacks?

A buyer purchases from me, I get a "Ship Now" notification (while the payment is pending).

I ship the item.

A day later, the buyers has 'buyer remorse' and issues a chargeback on the item through their credit card.

The chargeback is successful, the item has already been mailed out and my processing is still pending (and later cancelled).

I've lost my item and the payment and I'm out of the cost of shipping as well.

I assume this is a hypothetical situation?

As I understand it, the customer can still pay through his credit card, but the credit card payment is processed by Paypal.

PP will process the dispute as a Not Received.

  • You provide the tracking number to show the item was received. The Dispute fails.

PP will process the dispute as Not As Described.

  • You accept the dispute and demand the return of the item before refunding. PP tells the card company/the buyer to return the item with tracking and pay for  the return shipping.
  • The buyer is scamming and wants to keep the item. The dispute times out.
  • The buyer is truly unhappy and pays to return the item. You refund on reciept, not including the return shipping.

I'm assuming this is hypothetical, as well.

Credit card chargebacks take fa-reeking-ever to process, and the credit card issuers I know of won't allow chargebacks for not-received items until a fair amount of time has passed since the charge was posted to the buyer's credit card account.  According to the eBay help page on charge disputes, proof of delivery to the recipient's address on file for the transaction is required for an unauthorized charge dispute, and given the amount of time it takes to process chargebacks, the item is likely to arrive in the course of the chargeback process.

SNAD chargebacks are tough to fight, but then again, they always have been, unfortunately.

The page that marnotom posted basically explains how payment disputes are handled with Managed Payments.    From what I understand, you can fight some of those disputes such as an unauthorized credit card charge only if you have proof of delivery to the buyer.  Paypal used to require proof of shipping in that situation, MP requires proof of delivery which is difficult if the buyer disputes the charge right away.

Totally agree. Very frustrating is an understatement.  Your money is sitting in eBay's account earning them interest every day!!

Yep, this is a another huge drawback of this new system! On the whole most buyers are honest but with this system there are going to be some buyers who will use it to their advantage.  And why wouldn't they if they can get an item for nothing.  Am pretty sure eBay's answer to this will once again be for the seller to just chalk it up to the cost of being in business and write it off.  They will also say that in the case of this happening the buyer should return the item to seller but they won't make them return it because of the return shipping cost involved. So unless the seller pays for the return shipping cost (out more money again) absolutely nothing will come of it.

Now, I have to wait until money is received until I ship out and item.  It used to be an almost instant transaction.  What a shame that my freedom of choice has been taken away when it comes to buying and selling. And on top of that, ebay now charges MORE for a sale than it did under the PP deal.  I am not sure I am any type of winner, when my funds sit for a few days in some other account. I can only imagine the amount of money being made with mine and your money by the hour! Sad reality.

While you should wait until you are notified that the payment has cleared, you can use the payments in MP to buy a label.

It's the only* thing you can buy with your MP balance.

That confirms the money has been recieved, and that you can ship.

MP will use the cleared payment for eBay fees and then transfer it to your bank account. You can choose daily deposits or weekly.

Most small sellers are best to choose weekly since the balance being Held can ensure you have enough there for other payments like PL premiums and Store subcriptions.

But  you can have daily if you prefer.

Many of those complaining about the 3-4 delay after the transfer are forgetting that the same delay between processor and bank was also the norm, and also stated, when transfers were made by PP. Although PP would , for a fee, do a same day transfer.

Most sellers pay about the same for PP as they did for MP, 30c + 2.9% (domestic) to 3.9% (international) , for processing.  This will change when PP's announced fee rise begins this month.

Both PP and MP have stated the funds they Hold are in an escrow account, which is not interest bearing.

*A very dumb decision on eBay's part. Like most sellers, I used my PP balance to buy online, although less on eBay than on other things like newspaper subscriptions.

That was covered a while back, Ebay does not earn interest on funds it has in trust.  If they did, in Canada, those funds would be owed to the seller as it is their funds.
