Help with Managed Payment Listing Fees

Hi everyone,

I want to clarify how Managed Payments fees will work. (I have already read the various help articles).

Putting insertion fees aside, is the fee for typical categories (ex. Cell Accessories) 12.35% of the final sale + $0.30CAD?

I am just wondering of whether this will actually result in savings for me like eBay says. I don't think it will, so if anyone could let me know if my below example makes sense, please do.

I sell mostly inexpensive items (less than $8.00), so I have a PayPal Micropayments account, which charges a 5% final value fee plus $0.05 per transaction.

Let's say I sell an item for $5.95 (my typical price). In the current system, I would pay $5.95 * 0.10 for eBay fees + ($5.95 * 0.05) + $0.05 for PayPal fees. The total fees I pay for this transaction is $0.94.

With MP, I would pay ($5.95 * 0.1235) + $0.30. That's $1.03 of fees.

I know that's not a very significant difference, but it's not giving me any savings like I thought it would. That will add up, eventually. Are my calculations correct and will this system not benefit those who sell lower priced items?

Thanks,

Adam

Wow, that's unbelievable. I don't understand how charging fees on sales tax at all is ethical, not to mention making it depend on the specific item category. As someone who is just now beginning to prepare to pay sales tax (reaching the threshold...), this isn't making me confident I can do it without making mistakes.

I know, why would they hide so much information? What benefit does that have for buyers or even sellers? Seems really odd to me...

I feel like it would be hard for me to switch to another venue, and I am feeling a bit like eBay is my only option. I will start looking into it. I know there are options out there, but eBay is perfect for my business in a sense. It's just the fact that everything is do difficult (info. wise) that makes me want to leave.

I have sold on eBay for SO much less time than you, but I've never even had one tiny issue with PayPal, ever. Period. I have been buying and selling with PayPal forever, never a problem.

The reality is that if we want to continue to sell on eBay, we must register for Managed Payments.

Managed Payments is just about the same as  the combination of eBay plus Paypal that sellers use today.... May 2020.

There will be some subtle differences with Managed Payments .

Some important differences  for Managed Payments for eBay Canada could  relate to the fact that we sell on eBay Canada.

Anyone can register for Managed Payments,  and then find out the basics of Managed Payments.

Once registered a Canadian seller can stay and sell on eBay... or decide to leave...

Staying or leaving has always been an option..Years ago.... Today ...   or after registering  for Managed Payments.

If it weren't for some MP sellers on.COM sharing some of that "secretive" MP info. and/or for that Q & A thread on.COM, Canadian sellers would still be searching for info as there is so little being offered to Canadian sellers here on.CA.

@cumos55

The other difference between PayPal and Managed Payments is with PayPal funds received are on account. Managed Payments involves your bank account and the numerous + and - transactions. Those - transactions could  be adding to your monthly bank fees. I don't see that as a plus.

A seller must be able to track every transaction.... Nothing should be hidden....

Just like it is with eBay plus Paypal today...

Sales... Postage... and all fees paid...

We also should be very careful of going to eBay.com and look for information relative to Managed Payments

There is no guarantee that what we see on eBay.com will also apply to eBay Canada

I agree there may be some differences between MP on.COM and MP on .CA, but generally we see similarities. No matter which way it all goes down, this secrecy, lack of transparency and lack of info for Canadian sellers on .CA is inexcusable. If MP is such a great move for eBay, why are they not making this an easy transition for sellers? ..instead they are hiding important details until sellers register/commit to and/or sign up for MP.

Exactly, why do we need to commit to it before they tell us the information about it. Seems backwards...

A Canadian seller will receive a notice that they must register for Managed Payment before a certain date.

If that seller chooses not to register for Managed Payments, they will no longer be allowed to sell on eBay.

It is relatively easy to register for Managed Payments.

and...  once registered ..... if the seller is not happy with the new Managed Payments options  the seller can dismiss that registration and leave eBay.

Registration is a seller's choice

Those links are all fine and dandy IF you register for MP, but until a seller registers/commits to and/or joins MP, the finer details remain hidden. Not the way to do business! eBay is asking all sellers to sign on the dotted line BEFORE they have all the finer details...

Good luck with that!!Ain't never gonna happen!

"We will notify you when you can register to have eBay manage your payments. All sellers will progressively be activated for managed payments in 2020 and beyond."

eBay will see/hear nothing further from me, when it gets to that point!

So register now, look over the details and if you don't like what you see you can plan to close your eBay account on the date they tell you it's Managed Payments or nothing.

Although I haven't run all the numbers for all the possible situations I know that on Overseas (non-US International) sales I will be saving a little bit of money that should balance the small extra amount I will pay on Canadian orders.

One thing I'm absolutely sure of, I'm not leaving eBay because my fees may go up by a few basis points. I have ZERO concerns about the security aspects.

Somebody up-thread mentioned I would be happy if eBay spent the new revenue on site improvements, sure that would be nice but my point was that I'd rather eBay made the money instead of PayPal. eBay operates a site that let's me easily make money, PayPal never did a single thing for me except take fees for payment processing, payment processors are a dime a dozen, there is really only one eBay.

NO thanks, for myself I am not at all interested in registering for MP....

While still here I was gathering up as much information as I could for those sellers seeking answers to their questions about MP.

I never had any intention of staying on with eBay after 2020, which is why I set up shop on another selling venue 1-1/2 years ago and where sales there to date have now well surpassed sales on eBay for same time period, with FVFs half of what they are on eBay...

I think @recped said something elsewhere that if eBay takes the extra revenue it's going to pick up from Managed Payments and uses some of it for some much needed upgrades to the site's infrastructure, he'd be okay with this.  I know I would be.

Of course they will. I am sure the shareholders won't mind. Why on earth would you ever think otherwise.

While I appreciate what you are saying about eBay and PayPal, eBay having done much more for you, I think PayPal has done their role better. I have not had any issues with their system or customer service; whereas, eBay has given me a lot of trouble. Would I be selling online without eBay? Probably not. That's definitely something to think about.

If you've already registered for MP and can see the fees, it should say whether they will be charging the fees on the internet use tax.  Does it say that you will pay xx% and that will be on the total amount including item price, shipping and tax?
