I have 2 items with someone 'watching'--is there a way to see where /who they are?

Is there some way to see who the 'watching' listings are?

Re: I have 2 items with someone 'watching'--is there a way to see where /who they are?

Are you asking if there is a way to tell which members are watching your item(s)? The answer to that is no, there is not.

As exciting as it is to have Watchers on a listing (I know it certainly excites me) it's not actually a good measure of whether your item will sell and, if so, for what amount. I would have to venture to guess that most watchers are either Lookie-Lous or other sellers of the same item looking for a quick Sell One Like This. Very few Watchers are buyers. Buyers buy things, they don't just admire them from afar. Most of my Sold items never had a watcher at all, and most of my most-watched items will take an eternity to sell.

If you're asking how to turn watchers into buyers, well, that is a question we'd all like to answer.

Best of luck with your auctions.

Also, if I may offer some unsolicited advice, do NOT ship Surface to the USA. You will lose any INR opened against you within 30 days. And adjust your handling fees and/or shipping costs to Calculated Shipping for those items. Your too-high shipping costs will severely limit your interest from bidders. Most buyers are savvy enough to know it doesn't cost $40 to ship via Expedited across Canada, or $40 to ship to the USA via surface. Even from Prince George.

Re: I have 2 items with someone 'watching'--is there a way to see where /who they are?

I have items on my Watch List that have been there for years.

On the other hand, if your Watchers are resellers, they may jump in at the last second and offer the models you are selling as 'used' as New In Box, especially since they appear to be unopened (is that what you mean about the tape on Johnny Lightening?).

Most bids do arrive in the last few minutes, or even seconds, of the auction.

Best wishes for success.

Actually, you can't ship surface to the USA via Canada Post any more -- and even when you could it was always faster than 30 days.

The original poster is mistakenly using "Canada Post International Parcel - Surface" -- which is shipping service not available for use to the USA. They should be picking something from the list that has USA as part of the title - like "Canada Post Expedited Parcel - USA".

As you say, they should determine what a packed item would be (size and weight) and use calculated shipping. And buy their shipping through paypal for the best shipping discount value.

Re: I have 2 items with someone 'watching'--is there a way to see where /who they are?

I have heard of sellers who claim success by raising the price a bit when they have watchers in the hope of getting the "panic purchase"

I have not tried it but, it might be an interesting experiment. Raise it a tad for a day or two, then drop it back to where it was.

Or not.

I have one item that's had an average of 30 watchers for more than a year. It goes on markdown, the markdown ends, starts, ends. Every couple of months, the price increases since there's that many less left. Eventually, it will sell. Or not. I might take it down and give it to my kids.

I don't understand your comment about too high costs to ship to the US.  I find that it costs $30-40 per diecast car model; when I ask for the cheapest rate to most every US address!  What does INR mean?

INR = Item-Not-Recieved

INR = Item Not Received

Are you using paypal shipping to print your labels? There is a discount with it not otherwise available to ebay sellers at the postal counter.

Assuming your scale diecasts weigh less than 1kg, they can all ship with tracking via Tracked Packet to the USA for about $20 CAD.

Don't use newspaper as a void fill agent; it is too heavy. Bubble wrap, air pockets/pillows, or styrofoam peanuts is the way to go.

After 1 kg, it's Expedited Parcel USA but that's discounted too via paypal shipping.

I can mail an entire 24-count case of 1:55 scale diecast cars to the USA for less than $25. The only time I paid more than that to mail anything stateside, it was a whole bicycle in a box and that cost $58. I know your diecasts are bigger but I am familiar with the weight and size and i think you can estimate your postage costs to be lower and therefore gain more interest from buyers. A buyer doesn't consider postage to add value to their purchase; it's a throw-away expense to them.

Check this for rates: https://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/apps/far/business/findARate?execution=e1s1 You'll pay less via paypal.

You need signature with delivery on items valued at more than $850 CAD so that's Xpresspost USA but, up to that point, Tracked

Packet or Expedited will do just fine.

If you're feeling lucky and/or brave, shipment via untraced Small Packets USA starts at about $10 CAD but I wouldn't recommend it to new sellers.

But just so you know, that's your compare-to competition with other Canadian sellers: people who are willing to ship what you sell to the States for $10 in postage versus your $40 CAD to mail it.

Re: I have 2 items with someone 'watching'--is there a way to see where /who they are?

Interesting comment-so if there is no Surface international to the US--why is it listed?.  As it turns out most of the parcels to the US go Expidited.

Secondly, I have a discount card for the Canada Post; giving me a 'small business' rate.   I have no clue how to weight & calculate for a parcel; and don't understand how to do that with PayPal.

Re: I have 2 items with someone 'watching'--is there a way to see where /who they are?

That Small Business card (formerly Venture One) will give you a discount but there is a bigger one with paypal shipping on most services.

The Surface USA option should be eliminated but, for some reason, it's still there.

You can buy a food scale for about $20 at any Canadian Tire. It's what I've used from the start. The only thing too big for it was that aforementioned bicycle. That I had to get weighed at the post office. But I still came home to print my label with paypal shipping before taking it back.

Paypal shipping is easy to use once you get the hang of it. A small kitchen scale is all you need to set-up shipping form home. It will be worth your while.

I do use Styrofoam peanuts & bubble wrap, and try to keep the shipping boxes fairly small.  Don't understand or have the ability  to weigh & measure a parcel at home; and shipping with PayPal.  I have a Canada Post discount card for a 'small business'; that does make quite a difference.

Re: I have 2 items with someone 'watching'--is there a way to see where /who they are?

Here is a link to the pdf with all the rates: (click on business prices to get the document)

https://www.canadapost.ca/tools/pg/prices/default-e.asp?ecid=murl07001139

Here is a link to get your rate codes (put in your postal code and print the page)

https://www.canadapost.ca/tools/pg/prices/FSA_RateCodeLookup-e.asp

These two documents will let you calculate in advance the shipping rates anywhere via whatever type of shipping you plan to use....

Depending how you package your parcel, the volumetric weight may override the actual weight so you may have to take that into account. I believe it is lengthxwidthxheight (in centimeters) divided by 6,000 for expedited and divided by 5,000 for expresspost - for example if it is 40cm x 25cm x 8cm = 8,000 - volumetric size for expedited is 8000/6000 = 1.33 = 1.5 KG, and 8000/5000 = 1.6 = 2 KG for expresspost.

Are you planning to sell on eBay for a while?  Then you really need to learn these basics.

There's nothing to weighing and measuring parcels at home.  Buy a flat kitchen scale at Walmart for $15 that shows measurements in pounds and kilos, a tape measure for $5, and you're done.  It will be the best $20 investment you can make, in terms of saving you time and money on every shipment.  Place the scale on a flat surface, put the parcel on top, and read the weight.  Measure the parcel's length, width and height.

Now you have everything you need (except the buyer's address) to do a Paypal label.  Go to the sold item, find the link in the drop-down box that says "create a shipping label" (or words that effect), and click on it.  You'll be routed to Paypal.  Sign in, then complete the information on the form.  There will be a first page that will should already have the buyer's name and address filled in, and the shipping service (which you can change in the drop-down box if you like).

If you're shipping outside Canada, the second page will be the customs information, which Paypal will sometimes already pick up from the eBay listing.  Fill in the required boxes.  For the weights, remember that if you're using kilos, 180 grams (for example) is .180, not 180.  You will need to fill in an HS (exporter's) code if shipping outside Canada.  If you're selling a lot of the same sort of items, you'll probably only need one or two codes.  Once you have them, write them down so you don't have to keep looking them up.  Look up your code(s) initially on this site, or come back to this board and ask:

https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cid-dic.nsf/eng/h_00019.html

By the way, you'll be prompted at each Paypal screen if you miss anything.

On the last screen on Paypal, you can check over the details to be sure they're correct.  You can use the various "edit" buttons to go back and make changes.  You can also still cancel the label at this point if necessary.  Click the "Continue" button at the bottom of the page, wait a minute, and your label will appear, ready for printing.  Click print and go from there.  Once done, you can return to Paypal to log out.

Trim your label with scissors and either securely tape it to the parcel (with clear packing tape), or go online to Canada Post and order free "Labelopes".  If I recall, you can order up to 50 at a time, and Canada Post will mail them to you for free.  These will save you time and effort too.

Trust me -- and trust all the experienced sellers who've responded here -- Paypal labels are far less trouble and expense than going to the Post Office and using your discount card.  Forget the discount Canada Post gives you.  Paypal's discounts on Tracked Packet (US & International), Expedited (Canada and US), and Xpresspost (Canada, US and International) are much higher than anything Canada Post offers.

Once you've done a couple of Paypal labels, you'll wonder why you ever put up with all the fuss and bother of trekking off to the Post Office and paying higher rates.

All of this in turn will allow you to lower your shipping rates and increase your sales.

If you're nervous about eBay's new "on-time delivery" policy, then use Tracked Packet ("TP") or Expedited outside Canada, and Expedited domestically.  Quite frankly, with the excellent Paypal discount on Expedited Parcel, I find it's only a dollar or two more than TP to the U.S., and always faster.

If you're a bit of a risk taker (or expect to sell at a higher volume), Light Packet or Small Packet USA (no tracking) is still quite reasonable, although there are no Paypal discounts on those services.  Again, depending on weight and size of a box I often find that TP is so close to the price of Small Packet that I upgrade to TP.

The really difficult part of shipping is not weighing, measuring and printing out labels, but how to set your prices and where to ship to.  For a new seller, I'd strongly recommend sticking to shipping to Canada and the U.S. onlyuntil you get some experience.  The air parcel options to the U.S. through Paypal are very good.

My suggestion would be to use flat rate shipping to start out, as it's easier to keep control over your shipping charges, and even raise or lower your shipping when necessary.  You don't need dozens of different rates for the U.S. -- Light and Small Packet are the same price for all U.S. destinations.

For Expedited or TP (or Xpresspost, which I use only for higher-priced items), I simply look up a rate in the mid-US and use that.  Sometimes it costs a bit more if a buyer is in, say, California, sometimes a bit less if it's New York, but it all comes out in the wash.  You will of course need to weigh and measure your items (in their shipping boxes) when you list them.  Look up the shipping cost on the Canada Post website for the service you want to use, and then reduce it if you wish to pass on the Paypal discount to your customers.  If you have several items of the same size and weight, you don't need to weigh each one -- do one and use it as a template.

There is a lot more to setting shipping strategies and prices, but this should get you started and -- more importantly -- keep you out of trouble and able to continue selling until you gain some experience.  It should also hopefully encourage more sales.

On the other hand, if you're just clearing out a few personal items and don't plan to be selling on eBay for very long, then you might as well carry on with what you're doing even though it will be costing you time, money and probably also some customers.  Those factors are less important when it's just a matter of making some extra cash in the short term.

However, selling as a business on eBay, no matter how small, does take effort, commitment, and learning about eBay policies, both what to do and what to avoid doing.  It isn't quite as easy as eBay makes it out to be.

If you're planning to get into selling seriously on eBay, I hope this information will be of help.  Once you've spent time reading through some of the relevant eBay policy pages, and Paypal shipping information, come back and ask any questions here.

P.S.  You really don't need all the shipping math re volumetrics, etc.  Just look up the prices based on your parcel's weight and dimensions, according to the type of service you want to use.
