Shipping to Indonesia

I have a buyer from Indonesia who wants to purchase an expensive piece of china. I don't usually mail there because of the shipping cost, but they said they are prepared to pay that.

When I looked up the Expedited shipping, there was not an option for that, nothing that I can see where it would be insured.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

I'm procrastinating from other things I should be doing, but it appears they will only insure for loss, not damage:

Canada Post shall have no liability for damage of shipments containing Fragile Items. Fragile Items include but are not limited to ceramic,
glass, porcelain, mirrors, crystal, pottery, china, perishable items or items requiring refrigeration or temperature-controlled transportation.

(PS for the stamp folks out there, the limit for cancelled or uncancelled stamps is still $500)

PSPS for those other procrastinators out there, here's where the info is:

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

You'll have to go international expresspost to have tracking etc.
(I've got the tables printed off because I'm a stamps on the box kinda guy)

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

Thanks ricarmic. I phone Canada Post and I can send it Priority Worldwide to have it insured, I would have to take it to the post office to get it mailed, it will cost $168. She is prepared to pay that if I declare the value at $60, there is no way I am going to do that. For one thing it's dishonest, and if I had to claim if it's lost, that's all I would get refunded. It is worth $550 Canadian, so I won't do that.

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

You could also  send it xpresspost and use a 3rd party insurance company if CP doesn't provide extra insurance for that service.  As far as the declared value, I don't think that is the same as the insured value but you should only do what you are comfortable with.

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

You should have also been able to send it more cheaply via expresspost and insure it too (if you can insure china, I'm not sure about that).

Their customs limit must be $60 before stuff gets taxed there....

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

According to the CP calculator, there is an automatic $100 insurance with xpresspost to Indonesia but it doesn't show that extra insurance can be purchased through them.

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

My understanding, which could be wrong is if they'll cover the first $100 they'll cover whatever else you want up to various limits. (For stamps for example, they'll only cover up to $500 I believe, but I haven't checked for a long time as I use 3rd party)

Having said this if they won't cover china then they won't even cover that "automagic" $100., as I understand it....I do seem to recall there being a notation against china, and glassware but that is an "old memory" from a "medium old" guy.....

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

On the CP site, the parcel calculator shows that for Germany, you can buy extra postage for xpresspost but when you search for a price for Indonesia, there is no box showing that you can buy extra postage.  But as you mentioned....damage to china is unlikely to be covered anyway.

I'm assuming postage is insurance....that is interesting to know THX for checking further!

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

She is prepared to pay that if I declare the value at $60,

She's willing to lie about the value to avoid duty and taxes?

She just told you she is not an honest person.

The best insurance on breakable items is your own packaging.  Preventing the problem not getting paid afterwards.

And if there is a claim about damage, insisting that the "broken" item be returned-- which would be expensive from Southeast Asia.

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

I have mailed a lot of china in the past, the only breakage I had was within Ontario, and there was actually a tire mark across the package.

I appreciate all the help and investigations of the folks here. I haven't heard back since I told her I wouldn't mark the value at $60.

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

Canada Post's view of Indonesia:

www.canadapost.ca/tools/pg/manual/PGIntDestDetails-e.asp?table=tblCountry&txtLetter=ID

Has some rather odd import restrictions.

Priority is the only service with more than $100 insurance from Canada Post for Indonesia. Priority Worldwide is currently handled by FedEx for the outside Canada part of the journey.

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

i wouldn't because Canada post doesn't insure against damage, so if it gets damaged you would be responsible for the return shipping, or a straight up refund of the total sale. walk away..

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

Wow, those are a lot of restrictions. This one  ...any articles on which Chinese characters appear  How many of us would no exactly which characters are Chinese as apposed to other types of characters?

I guess I can't mail any live animals!

Re: Shipping to Indonesia

The buyer has walked away, I was feeling uneasy, but she does have excellent feedback and purchases from all over the world. Letting her know that I wouldn't put the value at $60 quashed the deal.

How could I put the value at $60, and then if it gets lost, claim  $500 from Canada Post, it wouldn't happen. Apart from that, I would be dishonest.
